In El Salvador it had been just something she had to do, but after her parents brought her to the U.S. when she was eight years old, it was a requirement that she came to love, thanks to a litany of encouraging teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This spring, so many years later, Keyri (pronounced \u201cKatie\u201d) has been back in the elementary school classroom, this time as a student teacher, offering students the same \u201cstrength and oomph\u201d that has fueled her own journey. And even though for years <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">college<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was an unfamiliar word, Keyri will graduate from Eastern Mennonite University on May 6 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/education\/\">degree in elementary education<\/a>. Along with nine others, she will wear EMU&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/04\/ten-2018-cords-of-distinction-recipients-honored-for-contributions-to-emu-community-and-beyond\/\">Cords of Distinction<\/a> in honor of her impact on the EMU and local communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38087\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38087\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38087 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180418-Kente-Ceremony-017-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180418-Kente-Ceremony-017-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180418-Kente-Ceremony-017-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180418-Kente-Ceremony-017-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38087\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keyri Lopez-Godoy &#8220;is truly an inspiration,&#8221; said education professor Cathy Smeltzer Erb.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKeyri is truly an inspiration wherever she goes,\u201d said Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=cs858\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cathy Smeltzer Erb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, education department chair. \u201cShe has a remarkable ability to remain positive in face of very challenging circumstances, and her effervescent personality, warm spirit and hopeful outlook promise to transform the lives of her students just like her teachers transformed her life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graduation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0will be another moment of having achieved what once appeared impossible, another opening door to remind Keyri of \u201cthe people who have made an impact and who have changed my perspective and the way that I carry myself,\u201d she said recently. \u201cIt has been because of those relationships that I have gotten this far.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That perseverance and support has resulted in a chance to give back\u00a0\u2013 in an anticipated position in a local elementary school beginning this fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whsv.com\/content\/news\/DACA-recipient-recounts-stressful-year-as-she-looks-ahead-to-graduation-481779231.html\">Watch WHSV coverage about Keyri Lopez-Godoy.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><b>Fifth grade: graduation day<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keyri\u2019s elementary school years in her new hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia, provided the first of many teachers she remembers with heartfelt gratitude, among them an English as a Second Language teacher,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who she said \u201cliterally took me by the hand and said \u2018Keyri, you are going to learn to read and write, and we\u2019re going to do this together.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adjusting to the new environment, though, took time, and a celebration at the end of her fifth-grade year caught her off guard. That day was \u201cstrange,\u201d she remembers, as the classroom filled with grandparents, relatives and parents. Her own parents, though, weren\u2019t there. The whole family was still figuring out the new education system, and even she hadn\u2019t realized there would be a \u201cgraduation\u201d ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI remember just feeling lonely,\u201d Keyri remembers, until her teacher came over to her with a gift and a letter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe knelt down \u2013 she was a tall lady \u2013 and looked straight in my eyes, and she said, \u2018Keyri, I am so proud of you. You are my bright star. I\u2019m really excited for what you will do in the future. Please come back and visit me.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Seventh grade: new word, new label<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In seventh grade, Keyri learned of her undocumented status at the same time she learned that new word, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">college<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI just kept hearing that word, and I was like, What is that? What does that mean? Is that a thing? Is that a person? (Courtesy photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When she showed her mother an application for a college preparatory support class, however, her mom explained why she would not be able to attend college: she was undocumented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the moment was \u201cprobably very hard for my mom,\u201d Keyri said she was not to be discouraged. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2018This is a label,\u2019\u201d she told herself. \u201c\u2018This will not limit me in any way.\u2019 Even though in reality it did, I guess in my 12-year-old self, I said \u2018This is not going to prevent me from working really hard and going to college.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Math backbone<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That year, she \u201cworked and worked as hard as I could,\u201d and started taking more challenging classes. In eighth grade, she took a ninth-grade algebra class, and \u201cstruggled \u2013 but made it through\u201d thanks to math tutoring that her teacher and principal arranged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every morning for an hour before school, she met a tutor, Louise Gallagher, and when Keyri learned that the work had brought her grade up to an A, she ran through the school to find her. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI just hugged her and I said, \u2018I did it!\u2019\u201d Keyri remembers. \u201cWe are still very close friends. She is one of my mentors. She is even helping me get through school. She has been a backbone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>High school: \u2018Can I succeed more?\u2019<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In high school, she began taking even more advanced courses, but still wasn\u2019t satisfied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs there more that I can do?\u201d she asked herself. \u201cCan I succeed more?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, she could \u2013 but that option, Advanced Placement (AP) courses, for college credit, revealed a twofold disadvantage.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38089\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38089\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38089 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20171006-DACA-chapel-010-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20171006-DACA-chapel-010-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20171006-DACA-chapel-010-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20171006-DACA-chapel-010-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38089\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keyri Lopez-Godoy speaks with EMU university campus pastor Brian Burkholder following a chapel service about DACA.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had everything going against me,\u201d she said of her first AP class, history, which she took in tenth grade. \u201cThe work itself, the amount of work, the reading, the vocabulary I wasn\u2019t used to. It was a whole new language for me, and I was like, \u2018How do I tackle this class?\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The college prep program had equipped her with note-taking and organizational skills, but she hadn\u2019t been taking honors classes, which typically fed into the AP courses. And she felt like she came to school with less academic savvy than her classmates.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of the kids had parents who had gone to college, who had very advanced conversations at home. In my household, we had conversations when we were able to, but my parents worked day and night to provide for us, so it was tough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, having a teacher rooting for her made the difference. On the day of her first AP exam, her teacher Amber Roberts<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brought each student a goody bag of cookies and candy and a note that said, \u201cYou will rock this exam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat was the strength and the oomph, the confidence booster that I needed to say, \u2018I got this,\u2019\u201d Keyri remembers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It took her all morning to finish, but she passed the test.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI go back to the moment\u201d \u2013 this would have been the previous year \u2013 \u201cthat I went up to her and I asked her, \u2018Do you think I can do AP history? And she did not lie to me. She said, \u2018Yes, you can.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately Keyri earned enough college credits through high school AP courses that she\u2019s finishing her bachelor\u2019s degree at EMU in three years, not the typical four.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>That word again<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That year \u2013 2012 \u2013 also marked an opening of possibility for Keyri through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. It allowed people brought to the United States as children and without documentation to reside, work and study legally here under renewable two-year permits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keyri would go on to be accepted into six colleges, but wasn\u2019t sure how to pay for this next step. (Courtesy photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of those six colleges in particular \u2013 EMU \u2013 seemed determined to help work out the money, though. And, her high school counselor Keri O\u2019Connor told her about the Emily Couric Leadership Scholarship, worth $30,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd this is where I also go back to relationships,\u201d she said: Not only was she nominated for the scholarship \u2013 each area high school could nominate just one female student \u2013 but the administration team at her school helped her prepare for the interview, in front of 20 people in downtown Charlottesville, Keyri said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another school counselor bought her an outfit for the interview. The principal Jay Thomas pulled together a team of teachers and community members for mock interviews. And on the day of the interview, O\u2019Connor came to her house to take her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2018Are you ready to do this?\u2019\u201d Keyri remembers her asking that morning. \u201cI said, \u2018No, I am not. But I will do it.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That evening, when she received the phone call congratulating her for being chosen the scholarship winner, she and her mom both started crying, there in their kitchen. So did her dad, when he came into the room, even though \u201cmy dad never cries,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keyri traces her successful interview back to her school counselor\u2019s assurance to her: \u201cShe was just there with me and said, \u2018We will get through this together.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>College: New uncertainty<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the time she found out about her immigration status until DACA began in 2012, Keyri knew her life could change at any moment. (Courtesy photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With President Trump\u2019s 2017 rescission of DACA \u2013 and the ongoing debate about the program \u2013 Keyri doesn\u2019t know her future in the U.S.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She continues to rely on the encouragement offered by the people who tell her, \u201cKeyri, we back you up. No matter what happens, we will be there to support you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s part of what EMU celebrates: global perspective. She points to one of the education department\u2019s objectives: to prepare teachers to work \u201cwith diverse populations in an ever-changing cultural and global context.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo me that means you work in a global mindset. You have students from all over the world, from different backgrounds, from different experiences of life, and that does not make them less or more of a human,\u201d she said. \u201cThat just makes them, them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While she has a teaching position lined up now, she may not know where she\u2019ll be in three or five years. But, she said, \u201cI do know that in whatever it is that I end up doing, it will be in service, giving back to people, educating, doing advocacy, and standing up and using my voice for the things I believe in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not until coming to the United States did Keyri Lopez-Godoy begin to enjoy school.
