Today we celebrate with you, and thank you for these contributions.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Academic Success Center<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Senior tutors with the Academic Success Center were recognized: <strong>Johanna Burkholder<\/strong> (accounting); <strong>Emily Clatterbuck<\/strong> (writing and Spanish, three years), <strong>Phoebe Coffie<\/strong> (biology, 1.5 years), <strong>Aaron Dunmore<\/strong> (economics, two years), <strong>Liesl Graber<\/strong> (writing, three years), <strong>Corey Hostetler<\/strong> (history tutor, three years), <strong>Austin Huff<\/strong> (math and computer science, three years),\u00a0<strong>Sammy Kauffman<\/strong> (biology, two years), Ma<strong>isie Kirkley <\/strong>(psychology, two years), <strong>Cerrie Mendoza<\/strong> (environmental science, one year), <strong>Susanna Sewall <\/strong>(nursing, two years), <strong>Rachel Shenk<\/strong> (core curriculum, two years), <strong>Stephanie Slabach<\/strong> <strong>Brubaker <\/strong>(nursing, one year), and\u00a0<strong>Lara Weaver <\/strong>(psychology, three years).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Janae Kauffman<\/strong> was awarded the Tutor of the Year Award for her three-year commitment to students \u201cwho often requested her, the ways in which she fulfilled the mission of the writing tutor, and her strong philosophy of tutoring overall,\u201d said Professor Vi Dutcher, director of the university\u2019s writing program.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Applied Social Science<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Josh Good<\/strong> was inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society. Professor Jenni Holsinger presented him with the cords.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Athletics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Newcomer of the Year awards went to\u00a0<strong>Rachel Sauder<\/strong>, soccer,\u00a0and <strong>Brett Lindsay<\/strong>, baseball.<\/li>\n<li>Athletes of the Year are <strong>Michaela Mast, <\/strong>cross country and track and field,\u00a0and <strong>Connor Faint<\/strong>, track and field.<\/li>\n<li>Presidents Awards went to <strong>Emily Augsburger<\/strong>, field hockey, and <strong>Dan Lutz<\/strong>, volleyball.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other award-winners from the spring semester were also recognized, and can be viewed at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emuroyals.com\">www.emuroyals.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bible and Religion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Michaela Mast<\/strong> won first place and $300 in the Haverim Writing Awards contest with her paper, \u201cThe Wilderness of the Bible in the Age of the Anthropocene,\u201d which traces the theological and cultural constructions of wilderness from Genesis to her own cross-cultural in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sarah Longenecker<\/strong> earned second place and $200 with \u201cArt as Mediator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luke Mullet<\/strong> won third place and $100 for \u201cToward Composition: Creatively Performing Scripture in a Dynamic World.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The awards were made by Professor Peter Dula, who used his remaining time to encourage submissions for next year\u2019s context with this line: \u201cIf you want to receive more money for an academic paper than you will ever get in your life, we invite you to participate next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Campus Ministries<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Undergraduate campus pastor Lana Sungu<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Outstanding senior chemistry student: <strong>Marchelle Smucker<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Outstanding senior biology student: <strong>Katherine Lehman<\/strong> and <strong>Samantha Kauffman<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Award for Excellence in Biology\/Chemistry Research: <strong>Braden Herman<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Biology\/Chemistry Award for Exceptional Service: <strong>Melissa Kinkaid<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, the winners of the STEM Celebration poster contest were recognized. <a results<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Jasmine Miller<\/strong>, currently on cross cultural, was awarded the Courage to Teach Award.\u00a0 The award is modeled after principles in Parker Palmer\u2019s book, a copy of which is given to the winner. Faculty select this student on several criteria.<\/p>\n<p>The five annual Teachers of Promise from EMU are <strong>Emily Clatterbuck, Jessica Longenecker, Keyri Lopez-Godoy, Hannah Shultz<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Alexa Weeks<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/03\/emu-names-five-as-teachers-of-promise\/\">Read more here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Language and Literature<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Emily Clatterbuck<\/strong> was awarded the Carroll Yoder Award for Teaching Excellence in honor of a senior or junior who has demonstrated academic excellence in both literary studies and education courses and demonstrates a clear call to the teaching profession.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Laurie Serrell<\/strong> earned the Ervie L. Glick Award for Excellence in World Language Study, which honors a senior or junior who has exhibited academic excellence as a Spanish major and has show a clear sense of call to pursuing graduate work or using language skills in service to the church.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Liesl Graber<\/strong> earns the Jay B. Glick and Ray Horst present at the event.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mathematical Sciences<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cameron Byer, Daniel Harder<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Ben Stutzman<\/strong> were recognized for their win in the international Kryptos crypto-analysis competition. <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/04\/emu-wins-international-cryptoanalysis-competition\/\">Read more about that win here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cameron Byer<\/strong> won the EMU Math Competition, introduced by Professor Daniel Showalter as \u201ca competition for people who go out of their way to take a math test when they don\u2019t have to,\u201d a description epitomized by the second-place-tie-winner <strong>Andrew Riemer-Berg<\/strong>, who took the test from Latin America where he is traveling on cross cultural. <strong>Ben Stutzman<\/strong> was the other second-place finisher.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Music Department<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Andry Stultz<\/strong> and <strong>Hannah Schultz<\/strong> received the Excellence in Music Education Award.\u00a0<strong>Perry Blosser<\/strong> earned the Excellence in Music Composition.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Nursing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The following students were chosen by their peers and faculty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rachel Breidigan<\/strong> was awarded the Servant Leadership Award for her service to others. She is president of the Student Nurses Association and will be working on the progressive care unit at RMH. \u00a0She chose nursing for many reasons, including \u201cthe desire to help others, the strong biblical parallels it has, and, of course, job security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stephanie Slabach Brubaker<\/strong> is awarded the Sacred Covenant Award and the award for academic achievement. The first award reflects the high performance of the embodiment of the Sacred Covenant Model EMU nurses use to guide their practice. In the choice of nursing as her profession, Stephanie hopes to \u201ccombine my desire to help others with my fascination with how God orchestrated the human body. Lehman Outstanding Achievement in Research, awarded by Professor Gregory Koop.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Scott Eyre mentioned that a record number of CAs are returning next year, one way in which this particular group has left a legacy.<\/p>\n<p>The five nominees for Residence Life\u2019s Transformational Leadership Award, voted by their peers, are <strong>Bailey Hall, Capril Mirarchi, <\/strong><strong>Keyri Lopez-Godoy, Jakya Jones <\/strong>and<strong> Phoebe Swe. <\/strong>The finalist will be announced later this week.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Psychology<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Four students were recognized by Professor Gregory Koop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Austin<\/strong> and <strong>Michaela Mast<\/strong> jointly earned the Galen R. Lehman Outstanding Achievement in Research, judged on the criteria of initiative and ingenuity, public dissemination, and quality of writing.\u00a0Michaela\u2019s research was titled \u00a0&#8220;The brain on music: An inquiry of shared music-color associations.&#8221;\u00a0Austin\u2019s research was on &#8220;Directed forgetting: Examining accounts through negative priming&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hannah Cash<\/strong> was awarded the Theory to Praxis Internship Award, for her work with The Making Space, a local art therapy program. Along with other responsibilities, Hannah helped to improve social media presence and community outreach, and was asked to continue her involvement as the new secretary to the board of directors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lara Weaver<\/strong> earned Best Undergraduate Poster at the Virginia Association for Psychological Science conference earlier this month. Her project was entitled &#8220;Role of intrinsic and extrinsic religious motivation and empathy in predicting theological ideation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Student Programs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Jack Hummel<\/strong> and <strong>Da\u2019Jahnea Robinson<\/strong> were recognized for their work on Campus Activities Council.
