On Thursday, three of her students presented linguistics research, including Abigail Shelly\u2019s study of the historical and contemporary use of the word <em>like<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37947\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37947\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/04\/inaugural-academic-and-creative-excellence-festival-builds-intellectual-buzz-on-campus\/20180419-ace-festival-presentations-019-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-37947\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37947 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180419-ACE-Festival-Presentations-019-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180419-ACE-Festival-Presentations-019-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180419-ACE-Festival-Presentations-019-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180419-ACE-Festival-Presentations-019-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37947\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cerrie Mendoza shares her group&#8217;s project on soil health with Professor Jim Yoder and onlooking students.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Indeed, Shelly\u2019s effort to participate was noteworthy: a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/04\/india-cross-cultural-group-shares-sights-and-sounds\/\">cross-cultural group currently traveling in India<\/a>, she made unsuccessful multiple attempts to email a video of her presentation. So it was that classmate Lydia Haggard provided interpretation \u2014 in front of a photo of Shelly and Shelly\u2019s poster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so pleased,\u201d Balasch said. \u201cThis is just so exciting to see my own students&#8217; research and their enthusiasm about their work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EMU\u2019s inaugural Academic and Creative Excellence (ACE) Festival culminated the academic year with a day-long all-university celebration of scholarly research and creative arts from undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff. The schedule included oral presentations, poster sessions, gallery receptions, and theater, arts and music showcases. [<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/academics\/academic-and-creative-excellence\/\">Click here to view the schedule<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis festival highlights the productivity of our students, faculty and staff around scholarship across all disciplines,\u201d said Provost <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/all-name?show=fk938\">Fred Kniss<\/a>. \u201cGood scholarship correlates to good teaching and good student learning. I have been thrilled with the energy and the turnout and the quality of work around campus today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/all-name?show=tlk326\">Tara Kishbaugh<\/a>, chair of the Intellectual Life Committee when festival planning began several years ago, noted a major challenge in adjusting the academic calendar. It\u2019s important that today celebrates scholarship and creativity in all disciplines, reaching across all interests and out to all audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Attuned to the presence of many students not normally in the Suter Science Center, Kishbaugh especially noted the loud chatter as groups circulated through poster sessions in the center\u2019s concourse or stopped to check out engineering projects. \u201cIt\u2019s been really nice to see non-STEM students here wandering around and asking questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That cohesive feel of intellectual engagement started with Wednesday evening\u2019s keynote address by <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/03\/fania-davis-to-keynote-academic-and-creative-excellence-festival-at-emu\/\">Fania Davis<\/a>, Kishbaugh said.<\/p>\n<p>Davis, a social justice advocate and Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow with the Council of Independent Colleges, connected her talk with <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/09\/common-read-selection-world-challenging-invitation\/\">EMU\u2019s 2017-18 Common Read<\/a> \u2014 Ta-Nehisi Coates&#8217;\u00a0<em>Between the World and Me<\/em> \u2014 and some of the racial justice-focused programming hosted by the university throughout the year. A long-time partner of EMU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a>\u00a0(CJP) and founder of Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth, Davis is currently focusing her efforts on furthering truth and reconciliation processes for racial healing in the United States.
