{"id":37820,"date":"2018-04-16T15:28:18","date_gmt":"2018-04-16T19:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=37820"},"modified":"2019-08-06T06:35:19","modified_gmt":"2019-08-06T10:35:19","slug":"suter-science-center-construction-manager-phil-martin-sees-the-big-picture-and-every-last-detail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/suter-science-center-construction-manager-phil-martin-sees-the-big-picture-and-every-last-detail\/","title":{"rendered":"Suter Science Center construction manager Phil Martin sees the big picture \u2026 and every last detail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Listen in on Phil Martin\u2019s phone conversation with an architect for the ongoing Suter Science Center renovation, and you get a sense of the eagle vision \u2013 and bird\u2019s-eye perspective \u2013 required for the Eastern Mennonite University\u2019s facilities planning and construction manager\u2019s job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Martin is the point person for the renovation, the liaison between, well, pretty much everyone involved in the project, from professors who will use the new labs and offices, to the contractors, to university administrators, to designers, to architects like the one he was talking with last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/campaign\/\"><strong>Learn more about the Suter West renovations<\/strong><\/a><\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Martin and the architect discuss the locations, circuits and dimming options for specific sets of lights in specific classrooms; building codes that might impact a professor\u2019s preferred placement of an LCD projector; and the office wall accent color swatches professors can choose from. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Suter Science Center drawings on the blueprint table in Martin\u2019s office show every aspect of the renovation project: the building as a whole, labs, offices \u2013 details including furniture and even sink faucets. Overseeing such a project requires a mind for big-scope details and minutia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And Martin might be the perfect person for his job. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37824\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37824\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37824 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180221-Suter-Science-Center-Aerial-002-1000px-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180221-Suter-Science-Center-Aerial-002-1000px-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180221-Suter-Science-Center-Aerial-002-1000px-1-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180221-Suter-Science-Center-Aerial-002-1000px-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37824\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Renovations will support EMU&#8217;s mechanics and prototypes labs, offices and student collaboration and study spaces.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s fun,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s like working on a giant jigsaw puzzle to get all the pieces in place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Martin\u2019s attention to project planning and review is more than fun, though, for EMU\u2019s CFO Daryl Bert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cA renovation project involves planning for the known conditions that are readily observable and the unknown conditions that sit behind existing walls,\u201d he said. \u201cPhil\u2019s wisdom and foresight from his years of experience ultimately result in a project that progresses smoothly, is completed on schedule, and stays within budget,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s music to the ears.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Puzzle fit<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Martin has put together some pretty big puzzles \u2013 including two five-year capital improvement program budgets of $850 million each in a Georgia school district where, as executive director of facilities services, he was part of a team that oversaw the construction of two dozen or more new schools and major renovations of numerous others.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37823\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37823\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37823 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180215-Planetarium-Astral-Society-012-1000px-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180215-Planetarium-Astral-Society-012-1000px-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180215-Planetarium-Astral-Society-012-1000px-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180215-Planetarium-Astral-Society-012-1000px-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37823\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Facilities planning and construction manager\u00a0<\/span>Phil Martin, engineering students and professor Danny King inspect a mechanism from the old planetarium projector.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But his amount of stress at that job was \u201cphenomenal,\u201d he said. The Christmas before he left it in 2008, his oldest daughter, a medical professional, noticed the physical toll it was taking on him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDaddy,\u201d she told him, \u201cThis Christmas you\u2019re different. If you don\u2019t get out of here, they will carry you out in a box.\u201d Those words played over and over in his mind over the next several months. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That stress level \u2013 and wanting to live nearer to grandchildren \u2013 prompted Martin to head north, and for eight years in West York, Pennsylvania, he directed the facilities program of a K-12 school district and managed multiple elementary school renovation projects and a $55 million high school renovation \u2013 and then started thinking about retirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Back in the 1970s, while a student at EMC, Martin had found student employment working in the Physical Plant. His skills and good sense didn\u2019t go unnoticed, and one day the physical plant director Eldon Kurtz and the university business manager Dwight Wyse called him in for an office chat: Would Martin be interested in managing a variety of \u201cdeferred maintenance projects\u201d that needed attention, things that were beyond the scope of regular maintenance work but too small to merit a general contractor? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was, in fact, interested \u2013 and for his junior and senior year at EMU, Martin worked half time while finishing his social work degree. (He would go on to earn a master\u2019s in business administration, from Mount Saint Mary\u2019s in Emmitsburg, Maryland.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some four decades later, in 2016, with retirement on his mind, Martin called up his old boss Kurtz, now the director of Facilities Management at EMU. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI made a lot of beginner\u2019s construction mistakes while working as a student at EMC,\u201d Martin told him. \u201cI would like to give back to the University, now that I have some experience.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Would Kurtz have any need of someone with some facilities and construction experience under his belt? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d Kurtz said, and in January 2017, Martin began his current position at EMU.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Working with people<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37822\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37822\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-37822\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180202-Science-Center-Renovation-003-1000px-1-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180202-Science-Center-Renovation-003-1000px-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20180202-Science-Center-Renovation-003-1000px-1.jpg 667w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37822\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Forty years after graduating from EMC, Martin returned to campus to oversee facilities upgrades.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When Martin and his wife Joyce left Harrisonburg in 1980, it was for her dietetic internship at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Over the next two years, Martin used his social work degree in a psychiatric hospital, in conditions of extreme challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That taught him a lot about working with people, which has proved valuable for his subsequent work with all the sorts of people who come together on a construction project, where there might be constant squabbles between workers; unrealistic expectations, construction costs and competing interests to negotiate; and lots of \u201csticky wickets.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI put my social work training to use in the business environment,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He has to \u201ctell it like it is,\u201d which \u201cmost of the time\u201d doesn\u2019t make him the good guy \u2013 and which, by the way, he seems totally okay with. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSometimes, in the past, I have had to carry a big stick,\u201d he said \u2013 \u201cand bark.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EMU, he said, has been a much more cooperative environment in which to work. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Hopes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/campaign\/\">Suter Science Center renovations<\/a> are another opportunity for Martin to take the dreams and ideas of end users and create a useful and cost-effective facility. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37825\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37825\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37825 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20170202-Suter-Science-Center-aerial-004-1000px-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20170202-Suter-Science-Center-aerial-004-1000px-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20170202-Suter-Science-Center-aerial-004-1000px-1-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/04\/20170202-Suter-Science-Center-aerial-004-1000px-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The renovation of the western portion of the Suter Science Center at Eastern Mennonite University is now underway.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Mechanics Lab layout, for example, takes into account space needs for specific research tools like the new wind tunnel, materials tester, data acquisition equipment, coupled tanks for calculating liquid flow rates, and more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 3-D printers, which are currently compressed into a small space, \u00a0will have a more spacious home in the Prototype Lab, with surrounding counter workspace. A new laser cutter will be located in the same lab and provide industry-like opportunities for student learning and projects. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A new student collaboration area is part of the renovation plans.
