{"id":37364,"date":"2018-03-16T12:05:09","date_gmt":"2018-03-16T16:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=37364"},"modified":"2018-03-23T13:40:55","modified_gmt":"2018-03-23T17:40:55","slug":"emus-high-end-digital-media-equipment-fuels-student-careers-and-styles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/emus-high-end-digital-media-equipment-fuels-student-careers-and-styles\/","title":{"rendered":"EMU&#8217;s high-end digital media equipment prepares students to excel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"848\" height=\"477\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8k3NfoKX1ZQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Having access to the equipment in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/vaca\/\">visual and communication arts<\/a> (VACA) equipment room at Eastern Mennonite University didn\u2019t just help Macson McGuigan with class assignments. It also helped him find his own style and jumpstart his career.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of the beauties of this small university: Whereas a large university might allow students to check out equipment for a few hours at a time, VACA students at EMU can check it out for days on end \u2013 sometimes for longer projects, or even over breaks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI encourage students to shoot as much as they can,\u201d said professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=holsoppj\">Jerry Holsopple<\/a>, who has spent nearly two decades filling the \u201ccloset\u201d shelves with DSLR,\u00a0 mirrorless and cinematic video cameras, underwater gear, tripods, lighting equipment, lenses \u2013 and more. \u201cThat\u2019s how you get good.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37368\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37368\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/03\/emus-high-end-digital-media-equipment-fuels-student-careers-and-styles\/20171027-vaca-promo-missy-muterspaugh-020-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-37368\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37368 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/20171027-VACA-promo-Missy-Muterspaugh-020-1000px-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/20171027-VACA-promo-Missy-Muterspaugh-020-1000px-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/20171027-VACA-promo-Missy-Muterspaugh-020-1000px.jpg 666w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37368\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Missy Muterspaugh sets up three-point lighting and a Sony Fs5 cinema camera for a video interview. (Photo by Andrew Strack)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For McGuigan, who graduated in 2017 and now is a photographer and videographer for EMU and other clients, the equipment was what he needed for meaningful skill-building experiences.<\/p>\n<p>For a documentary photography class, he took portraits of food truck owners and chefs using \u201clots of fast prime lenses.\u201d To capture the small, cramped interior spaces of the trucks, he used \u201csuper-wide-angle lenses.\u201d (And \u2013 can\u2019t leave out this best part \u2013 he said that the food trucks set him up with some free food.)<\/p>\n<p>But as a VACA student McGuigan was also welcome to use the equipment for his own projects, including professional ones. He used a Sony Fs5 to film up to 16X slow-motion shots of bees, streams and owls (and Sony mirrorless cameras, LED lighting and mics to conduct interviews) for a client advocating for the protection of Shenandoah Mountain as a National Scenic Area with an embedded Wilderness Area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving access to the VACA closet allowed me to realize what my style is and what equipment I need to get the job done,\u201d McGuigan said. \u201cIt really helps students find their niche as photographers or videographers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Student works<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Other student projects have included starting small businesses, creating documentaries, and making videos for small companies, all while at EMU, Holsopple said. \u201cIt\u2019s what we want. It\u2019s the way they build their portfolio of work. You don\u2019t improve your skills just by doing the assignments only.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With VACA graduates entering a variety of career fields, Holsopple has a goal: \u201cWhatever equipment they\u2019re handed, they should be able to handle,\u201d he said. \u201cI want students to have the full experience of just about everything they should know how to use. It\u2019s always a balance of the cool, new, but also the basics of everything you need to produce at a high level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The work of VACA program students and graduates has been recognized nationally:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lilamarks.com\/\">Lila Marks<\/a>\u00a0earned praise for her senior show, an <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/10\/senior-photography-exhibit-juxtaposes-effortless-beauty-hawaiis-homelessness-crisis\/\">exhibit of documentary photos<\/a> related to the homeless and homelessness in Hawaii.<\/li>\n<li>Senior <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/02\/digital-media-major-will-travel-to-antarctica-with-explorer-robert-swans-youth-leadership-program\/\">Adila Wahdat<\/a> was selected for\u00a0the 2016 International Antarctic Expedition with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/2041.com\/\">2041 Foundation.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/matt-gillis-photography\">Matthew Gillis<\/a> interned for National Geographic Adventure in New York City, the D.C. United soccer team and Oregon\u2019s Statesman Journal. He was the winner of an Associated Press Photo of the Month, and now is an events photographer.<\/li>\n<li>Michelle L. Mitchell is an award-winning photographer for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyprogress.com\/newsvirginian\/lifestyles\/picturesque-luxembourg-a-photographer-s-dream\/article_ef22df98-24cb-11e8-a94d-b786a30c6437.html\">News Virginian newspaper<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kelbymiller\/\">Kelby Miller<\/a> is a promotion manager at\u00a0<em>SNN<\/em>\u00a0Local\u00a0News\u00a06, the only locally owned and operated television station in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Sarasota market.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joellandis.com\/\">Joel Landis<\/a> interned at an advertising agency specializing in film trailers in Los Angeles. After graduation, he moved into a full-time role as video editor. He now creates film trailers for major motion pictures and is based on the West Coast.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joaquinsosa.com\/\">Joaquin Sosa<\/a>\u00a0is a freelance photographer and videographer in Washington D.C. He was\u00a0Sierra Club&#8217;s outdoor youth ambassador for 2012, blogging from around the world.<\/li>\n<li>Advertising executive Rachel Wyse <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/10\/art-director-rachel-wyse-gets-friendly-facebook\/\">started her career with Facebook<\/a> in New York City.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stevenstauffer.com\/\">Steven Stauffer<\/a> has filmed Drew Holcomb, for Nike and Under Armour, and more. While at EMU, he submitted his class photography portfolio to the Festival of the Photograph and was awarded a scholarship to study with National Geographic photographer Bill Allard. (Photo by Macson McGuigan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want to know what the value of this room is,\u201d Holsopple said recently, standing in the equipment room. \u201cI\u2019m not sure I could tell you, off hand. It\u2019s over a quarter million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a way, the Sony FS5s, A7R IIs and A9s, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IVs, the new LED lights \u2013 all are part of his own portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a scavenger,\u201d he said. Instead of ordering pre-assembled kits of equipment, he orders just necessary components, often used instead of new but still perfectly functional and in great shape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Used\u2019 doesn\u2019t mean much for a tripod that will last 25 years,\u201d he said, pointing out a hefty one that new would have cost $3,000 but that he bought used \u2013 16 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s how we have all this. I think, \u2018Well, we need this, and we can\u2019t afford it, so I\u2019ll wait until somebody advertises it as an open box, and then I\u2019ll order it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He picked up a 40-plus-years-old Leica lense, a personal favorite for \u201cthe way it renders color, the way it falls off from in-focus to out-of-focus areas. It\u2019s lovely.
