{"id":37188,"date":"2018-03-05T13:02:42","date_gmt":"2018-03-05T18:02:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=37188"},"modified":"2018-03-12T17:52:02","modified_gmt":"2018-03-12T21:52:02","slug":"bibliophiles-delight-100-years-of-emu-library-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/bibliophiles-delight-100-years-of-emu-library-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Bibliophiles&#8217; Delight: 100 years of EMU library history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From one book (Virgil\u2019s\u00a0<em>Aeneid<\/em>) to more than 500,000 items today, the library has always been a source of knowledge, wisdom and social life at first Eastern Mennonite School, then Eastern Mennonite College and now Eastern Mennonite University.<\/p>\n<p>Sadie A. Hartzler Library Director Marci Frederick combed carefully through the reports of previous directors to find the following chronological gems.<\/p>\n<p>From 1917-1954, scant information is available, she notes. The first library director reports cover 1954-55 and go until 2004. Quotations come from those reports.<\/p>\n<p>A few non-chronological tidbits, to start:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A representative from\u00a0<i>Jeopardy!<\/i>\u00a0once called to talk about Amish furniture.<\/li>\n<li>All of the Historical Library librarians have been left-handed.<\/li>\n<li>Over the years, the library has loaned items to the Office of the President of the United States, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Supreme Court, and the library at Disney\u2019s Animal Kingdom, among many other libraries on all continents except Antarctica. The Library of Congress once offered to send a car to EMU to pick up a rare book.<\/li>\n<li>Library staffers enjoy a convivial working relationship. In 2016, for Lois Bowman\u2019s 80th birthday, library staff did the scramble over Bear Fence Mountain in Shenandoah National Park. This is just one of many summer outings over the years, including a tour of the Library of Congress.<\/li>\n<li>Creating \u201cgoodie plates\u201d for student workers at Christmas is also an enjoyable tradition.<\/li>\n<li>Pranks in the library have a long and witty tradition. Sometime between 1996-98, pranksters placed a small vehicle (perhaps a trailer) without its wheels in front of the library\u2019s main doors. A few weeks later, just before graduation, a Volkswagen Beetle appeared on the first landing of the main outside staircase. Library staff enlarged a bar code and pasted it on the car\u2019s windshield.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>October 10, 1925<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The library\u2019s first recorded accession for its book collection is Virgil\u2019s\u00a0<i>Aeneid<\/i>, with notes by Thomas Chase, published by Eldredge &amp; Brother, Philadelphia, probably in 1885. Fifteen of the first 25 items added are Greek or Latin texts. (Librarian Sadie Hartzler also taught Latin.) The other ten are in English literature.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First theological book received (accession #32): J. W. Beer\u2019s\u00a0<i>The Jewish Passover and the Lord\u2019s Supper<\/i>\u00a0(1811);<\/li>\n<li>First science book (accession #37): R. P. Williams\u2019\u00a0<i>Introduction to Chemical Science (1873)<\/i><\/li>\n<li>First education\/psychology book (accession #74): Edward Brooks\u2019\u00a0<i>Mental Science and Methods of Mental Culture, Designed for the Use of Normal Schools, Academies, and Private Students Preparing to be Teachers<\/i>\u00a0(1881).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>1925-1950s?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Prior to approximately 1938, books with suspect theology were marked with notations specifying the nature of their problems. \u00a0Inside the front cover of James D. Dana\u2019s\u00a0<i>Manual of Geology Treating of the Principles of the Science with Special Reference to American Geological History<\/i>\u00a0(4th ed., 1894) we find this: \u201cCaution! The author accepts the Theory of Evolution and presents false opinions as scientific truths. \u00a0Read Gen. 1:131 [sic].\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2775\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37196\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37196\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37196 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/scan_40601.1-1000px-768x532-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/scan_40601.1-1000px-768x532-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/scan_40601.1-1000px-768x532.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37196\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grace Showalter, library staff member.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Well into the 1950s, some fiction books had certain words blacked out, and materials with questionable content (like\u00a0<i>Life\u00a0<\/i>magazine) were kept at the librarian\u2019s desk. The library did not house the most problematic books, however; the Heresy Library was kept in the Dean\u2019s Office. While these practices violate current professional library codes of ethics, it is surprising that the institution collected these problematic materials at all. Their collection suggests some effort to engage with the ideas they held, however questionable they were deemed to be.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1954-55<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In June 1955, the total book collection was 19,933.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1955-56<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Filmstrips and 8mm\/16mm films begin to be acquired about this time. A microfilm machine was purchased.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1961-62<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Keeping up with current research is recognized as important. Abstracting literature (<i>Biological abstracts<\/i>), indexes and review journals are added to meet Southern Association requirements. These types of literature provide greater access for faculty and students to the most recent research literature.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1962?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>An audio-visual department (later \u201cLearning Resources\u201d) is formed within the library to provide film screening and sound amplification operators, and production services for graphics, audio, photography, and television. This department provides about half of the library student jobs (45 at its height in 1982-83). \u00a0The longtime department head, Milo Stahl, leaves in 1984. \u00a0Martin King takes over until his position is moved to Information Systems in 2009.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1962-63<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Interlibrary loan traffic (received and lent) comprises 81 items, all books and dissertations.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1966-67<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37193\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37193\" style=\"width: 216px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37193 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/Library-happening006-1000px-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/Library-happening006-1000px-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/Library-happening006-1000px.jpg 719w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Faculty members Conrad Brunk and John Henry Hess and student Larry Cullen count contributions during the library fund drive.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The library purchases\u00a0<i>The New York Times<\/i>\u00a0(NYT) on microfilm. Microfilm will play an increasing role in both providing access to new materials (like the NYT) and in preserving other materials (like print journals) in a more compact format.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1969-71<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Design, fundraising and building of the new building. The \u201cbig move\u201d of the collection took place on June 30, 1971 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1972-73<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It was reported that the library staff donated time to cover the library in the evenings and on weekends.<\/p>\n<p>Food machines appeared in the building.<\/p>\n<p>Art gallery space was allocated in what had been designed as a third floor lounge, against the library\u2019s wishes. The library continues to (more willingly) host gallery space today, now on the main floor.<\/p>\n<p>Staff concerns, as noted in the library director\u2019s report:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Materials taken out and not returned, or returned late, or taken without being checked out;<\/li>\n<li>Noise: \u201ctoo much visiting and talking too loudly;\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMoving about and misusing library furniture;\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201clack of opportunity for formal orientation and instruction.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The library did little teaching until the mid-1980s.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2779\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<h3><strong>1973-74<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37195\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37195\" style=\"width: 215px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37195 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/Library-happening015-1000px-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/Library-happening015-1000px-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/Library-happening015-1000px.jpg 716w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37195\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New library building under construction.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>James O. Lehman was named director; former director Margaret Shenk remained on staff as technical services librarian until her retirement in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>The Historical Library was already full, so walls were torn out to expand its footprint on the third floor.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1974-75<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In May 1975, the library accessioned its 75,000th volume.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1975-76<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The library becomes the first major user of computer technology when it joins the OCLC cooperative via SOLINET.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1976-77<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The first specialized OCLC computer terminal is installed, enabling book cataloging that is shared nationally, interlibrary loan identification and ordering (two years later), and the production of catalog cards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is quite possible that several pranks by students were indications that they were reminding us of the relative ease of getting into the library during off hours.\u201d Pranks have continued to the present day. One time students set a library table with breakfast cereal boxes, bowls and spoons to represent the Serials (journals and magazines) collection. Lehman commented, \u201cHow soon do we go to this new approach? \u00a0It is probably wise not to jump too quickly, although sometime in the next decade it may be necessary to plan for it.\u201d Full implementation of the library homepage and web catalog took place in 1995-96.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe EMC\/S Library has not yet received pressure for access to a number of data bases, but it is quite conceivable that in the next decade we will need to consider those options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first electronic security system was installed in the summer of 1985, despite concerns that it reflected a \u201clack of trust\u201d of library users.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1985-86<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_2786\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37192\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37192\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37192 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/IMG_9419-1000px_long_edge-768x512-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/IMG_9419-1000px_long_edge-768x512-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/IMG_9419-1000px_long_edge-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The library building is one of the larger buildings on campus.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The building was officially named after Sadie A. Hartzler, the first librarian. The Historical Library acquired over 100 items concerning Dutch artist Jan Luyken, who is most famous for producing copperplate engravings for the second edition (1685) of Tieleman van Braght\u2019s\u00a0<i>Het bloedig tooneel of martelaersspiegel,\u00a0<\/i>better known as\u00a0<i>The martyrs\u2019 mirror<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1986-87<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Audrey Shenk arrives to work with acquisitions. CD-ROMs are mentioned. Videotapes are added around this time.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1987-88<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Historical Library expands again. Two Apple IIe computers are added for word processing. Fire sensors and alarms are installed. This is the last year that filmstrips and slides are purchased.<\/p>\n<p>The library participates in first-year orientation beginning in 1987.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1988-89<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Access via phone line is provided to Knowledge Index, a collection of 75 databases from DIALOG.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1989-90<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A Menno Simons conference is held in March 1990.<\/p>\n<p>In 1989-90, a student attempting to hide in the building was caught twice by new Technical Services Librarian Jennifer Ulrich, which was a good thing for him, because he would have been locked in all weekend.<\/p>\n<p>New reference librarian David Alleman provides instruction for 20 classes. \u201cInformation literacy\u201d comes into the lexicon about 1996, and is added to all sections of College Writing.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1990-91<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Historical Library head Grace Showalter dies on the day she was to have retired. Lois Bowman, who began working in the library in 1962, takes the position and continues until her retirement in 2014, when Simone Horst begins as special collections librarian.<\/p>\n<p>A large number of filmstrips and slides are withdrawn.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1991-92<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The library begins to add records for older materials to its computerized catalog holdings in OCLC.<\/p>\n<p>There are five computers for staff use and seven for public use.<\/p>\n<p>Scholar-in-residence Irvin Horst is honored with a dinner, a festschrift (<i>Menno Simons, a reappraisal: essays in honor of Irvin B. Horst on the 450th anniversary of the Fundamentboek<\/i>), and a plaque for the Special Collections room.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1992-93<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Historical Library is pressed for space again. The book collection tops 135,000 volumes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1993-94<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAutomation, networking and getting on the Internet will bring major changes, probably more than most library staffers can imagine.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1994-95<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The \u201ccue room,\u201d where films were set up for previewing, is transformed into a training room for computer users.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1995-96<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/https\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/02\/james-o-lehman-librarian-and-congregational-historian-was-with-hartzler-library-from-the-miracle-drive-and-beyond\/\">James O. Lehman retired as director<\/a>, remaining as university archivist until 2000.<\/p>\n<p>The first two web-based databases,\u00a0<i>Britannica online<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Project Muse<\/i>, are added.
