In the second, tables had turned: the smaller fish were chasing the big fish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat second image there is what I think of when I think of community organizing,\u201d Seidel told the group, gathered for the afternoon session of SPI Community Day at Eastern Mennonite University.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36949\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36949\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/02\/drummers-help-spi-community-day-participants-feel-the-beating-heart-of-peace\/20180202-spi-community-day-004-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36949\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-36949 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/02\/20180202-SPI-Community-Day-004-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/02\/20180202-SPI-Community-Day-004-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/02\/20180202-SPI-Community-Day-004-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/02\/20180202-SPI-Community-Day-004-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36949\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Good conversation is always a part of SPI Community Day and Summer Peacebuilding Institute.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One thoughtful middle school teacher, who had driven several hours from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, had a different observation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cNot all the fish in my classroom are swimming the same way,\u201d he said, \u201cand some of those fish are angry.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Amid much laughter, there were also nodding heads.<\/p>\n<h3>Practical skills, positive energy<\/h3>\n<p>The interaction was SPI Community Day in a nutshell: thought-provoking discussion in an educational environment that emphasizes practicality and the experiences of those in the classroom, undergirded by the positive energy (and often good humor) of face-to-face interaction.<\/p>\n<p>Seidel\u2019s workshop was one of seven offered during the one-day event, which gave approximately 85 participants a taste of the learning opportunities and warm friendly environment of \u201cSPI,\u201d or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cjp.edu\/spi\">Summer Peacebuilding Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/spi\">Register for Summer Peacebuilding Institute.<\/a><\/aside>\n<p>Since 1994, more than 3,200 people from 120 countries \u2014 and a wide variety of professions \u2014 have attended the summer program, gaining concrete strategies and practical skills in organization, facilitation, reconciliation, restorative justice, participatory arts, trauma awareness and much more.<\/p>\n<p>During its four sessions in May and June, academically credentialed practitioners teach <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\/courses\/\">five- and seven-day courses<\/a> that can be taken for personal skills growth and training or academic credit. <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\/courses\/#Session 5\">Three-day workshops are also offered<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;Drums No Guns&#8217; founder offers keynote<\/h3>\n<p>One of those practitioners who will teach this summer kicked off the Community Day event.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36946\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36946\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/02\/drummers-help-spi-community-day-participants-feel-the-beating-heart-of-peace\/20180202-spi-community-day-015-1000px-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36946\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-36946 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/02\/20180202-SPI-Community-Day-015-1000px-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/02\/20180202-SPI-Community-Day-015-1000px-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/02\/20180202-SPI-Community-Day-015-1000px-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/02\/20180202-SPI-Community-Day-015-1000px-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ram Bhagat will co-teach a STAR course at SPI this summer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A drum welcomed the group into Martin Chapel for a keynote address, interspersed with guided meditation and a lecture on racial healing, by Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\/instructors\/ram\">Ram Bhagat,<\/a> a Richmond-based educator and founder of Drums No Guns. In 2016, Bhagat was named Richmond\u2019s Peacebuilder of the Year by the Richmond Peace Education Center.<\/p>\n<p>More drumming ended the session, led by his son Shyamuu, who lives and drums in Colorado. Ten participants were lucky enough to enjoy a short bucket-drumming lesson that resulted in a soul-shaking version of the Bhagats\u2019 signature beat, \u201cJunkyard Jam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bhagat, currently earning a postgraduate certificate in restorative justice, will teach <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\/courses\/star-level1\">Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience<\/a> (STAR) at SPI this summer.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"848\" height=\"477\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y5ymCBvl1lI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Community Day participants: what they said<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Drew Miller, middle school principal<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Miller\u2019s middle school a few miles outside of Harrisonburg is working to instill a restorative culture model. Two teacher-leaders from Montevideo accompanied him to SPI Community Day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">His big takeaway from a session on conflict-competent leadership with Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\/instructors\/gloria\">Gloria Rhodes<\/a> was a new perspective on conflict itself. \u201cWhen used properly, fire can provide warmth and light, both positive things,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen not handled properly, it becomes destructive. As I&#8217;ve dealt with conflicts this week, I&#8217;ve kept that in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36952\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36952\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/02\/drummers-help-spi-community-day-participants-feel-the-beating-heart-of-peace\/20180202-spi-community-day-008-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36952\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-36952 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/02\/20180202-SPI-Community-Day-008-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/02\/20180202-SPI-Community-Day-008-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/02\/20180202-SPI-Community-Day-008-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/02\/20180202-SPI-Community-Day-008-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36952\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Conversation during a coffee break.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He added that the concept of \u201cquiet centeredness,\u201d taught in a peace education session with Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\/instructors\/ed\">Ed Brantmeier<\/a>, of James Madison University, was also useful in addressing conflict and wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Lance Brown, career coach<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Brown, of Westwego, Louisiana, combined his SPI Day experience with an exploratory visit to Eastern Mennonite Seminary. A career coach with the social enterprise-based organization JUMA Ventures, Brown introduces young adults ages 18-24 to career planning, employability and financial management skills and part-time employment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cI appreciated the focus on the power people have and the necessity of strategic work to accomplish the work of peacebuilding rather than simply peace-praying,\u201d he shared later in an email. How I interpret scripture in a way that doesn\u2019t oppress human beings and\/or prop up unjust and inhumane systems? And how do I develop the relevant skills to live out a liberating gospel worth practicing?\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Rebeca Barge, director of programs, Big Brothers Big Sisters<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Barge, a regular attendee of the summer institute, offered SPI Community Day as a professional development opportunity. Two staff and two Big Sisters attended.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cOne big take away,\u201d she reflected, \u201cwas the importance of understanding and naming the different aspects that make up an organization&#8217;s culture, and identifying the blessings and barriers of that culture.
