{"id":36361,"date":"2018-01-10T09:52:42","date_gmt":"2018-01-10T14:52:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=36361"},"modified":"2018-01-15T16:34:27","modified_gmt":"2018-01-15T21:34:27","slug":"seeing-cage-emu-race-gender-classmates-explore-inequality-systemic-injustice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/seeing-cage-emu-race-gender-classmates-explore-inequality-systemic-injustice\/","title":{"rendered":"Seeing &#8216;the cage&#8217;: EMU race and gender classmates explore inequality, systemic injustice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In their last Fall 2017 class together, the students in SOWK 360 \u201cRace and Gender\u201d stood and linked arms, a living symbol of solidarity and connection after a semester of tough discussions within the national context of a charged political climate.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=pannellm\">Melody Pannell<\/a> had walked alongside them through a semester of difficult conversations about societal inequality, and their capstone projects, shared in that final week, displayed a nuanced activism in and among the campus community: a sampling of topics included\u00a0 \u201cThe Role of Power in Social Instability,\u201d \u201cBird Cage Theory\u201d and \u201cThe Fight Against Sexism with Title IX.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/mlk\/\">2017 MLK Week events<\/a>. Read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/diversity\/i-believe\">&#8216;This I Believe&#8217; statements<\/a>.<\/aside>\n<p>And they\u2019d written personal statements of hope and belief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents take this class because they need to talk about the issues,\u201d said Pannell. \u201cBut along the way, they learn about the hearts and talents of each other \u2013 and about themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/mlk\/\"><strong>EMU&#8217;s MLK Week 2017 is Jan. 10-15. Get involved!<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Enlightening, equipping<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36363\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36363\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/01\/seeing-cage-emu-race-gender-classmates-explore-inequality-systemic-injustice\/20171207-social-change-race-and-gender-class-26\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36363\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-36363 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/01\/20171207-Social-Change-race-and-gender-class-26-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/01\/20171207-Social-Change-race-and-gender-class-26-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/01\/20171207-Social-Change-race-and-gender-class-26-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/01\/20171207-Social-Change-race-and-gender-class-26-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36363\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Melody Pannell (left) with members of her SOCW 360 class in December 2017.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Senior Emmanuel Kampanga said the course was one of the most enlightening he\u2019s taken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpening up about social issues can be challenging,\u201d he said, \u201cbut rapidly a safe space was created between the students in the class.\u201d Now \u2013 having studied the history of racism, gender inequality and social injustice in America \u2013 Kampanga said he is equipped \u201cadvocate for what I believe in using facts rather than emotions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Gabby McMillon, too, said that the class was formative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Race and Gender\u2019 has provided me with tools and a platform to promote change in my community,\u201d she said. \u201cI learned what it means to be an ally and advocate. Each of us has power, and we can use that power to create change.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Musician responds<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36365\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36365\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/01\/seeing-cage-emu-race-gender-classmates-explore-inequality-systemic-injustice\/20171207-social-change-race-and-gender-class-19\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36365\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-36365 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/01\/20171207-Social-Change-race-and-gender-class-19-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/01\/20171207-Social-Change-race-and-gender-class-19-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/01\/20171207-Social-Change-race-and-gender-class-19-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/01\/20171207-Social-Change-race-and-gender-class-19-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36365\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fabiana Espinal reads her &#8216;This I Believe&#8217; statement.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Senior Maleke Jones\u2019s group presented about bird cage theory, which uses the metaphor that individual wires \u2013 each a specific form of oppression \u2013 work together to make a cage that leaves \u201cno way for the bird to escape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones was known on campus already for his music, and was inspired to weave his coursework about bird cage theory into his art, a song \u201cCaged Bird.\u201d It represents \u201chow minority groups feel. Black people do get held back just because of their skin color,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMusic is universal,\u201d said Pannell \u2013 and was a non-threatening way for Jones to tell his story. \u201cIt has such a rawness to it. It\u2019s emotional,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you at all know him and care about him as a person, it will cause you to think, \u2018Wow, that\u2019s how racism affects him,\u2019 and how you don\u2019t want that to be the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The song, Jones said, is \u201cnot only a voice speaking on my behalf, it\u2019s a voice that\u2019s speaking for the voiceless. In his class presentation about power, Kampanga pointed out examples of institutional racism: in education minorities suffer greater suspension rates; in criminal justice minorities receive longer sentences for the same crimes; and in the marketplace having a black-sounding name makes a person less likely to be called for an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fight between those that have power and those that don\u2019t have it,\u201d he said. \u201cThose that have power don\u2019t want to let it go, because power comes with benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>White privilege<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36366\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36366\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/01\/seeing-cage-emu-race-gender-classmates-explore-inequality-systemic-injustice\/20171207-social-change-race-and-gender-class-22\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36366\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-36366\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/01\/20171207-Social-Change-race-and-gender-class-22-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/01\/20171207-Social-Change-race-and-gender-class-22-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/01\/20171207-Social-Change-race-and-gender-class-22-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/01\/20171207-Social-Change-race-and-gender-class-22-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36366\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">For the first time in four semesters of teaching this class, Professor Melody Pannell says the class roster was majority-minority.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pannell said that it was her first time teaching the class that the roster was minority white. One senior, Elizabeth Witmer, had always considered herself an ally of minorities; in this class, she was one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt like there was a shift inside of me, saying \u2018I need to take a step back and listen, and not speak so much,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201c\u2018I need to listen.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What she heard were \u201cbig, burly black guys\u201d talk about being scared, particularly whenever police are around, \u201cpowerful\u201d stories of fellow students facing discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>They weren\u2019t textbook paragraphs; they were real stories.<\/p>\n<p>Her group\u2019s class project involved posting \u201cCheck your privilege\u201d signs around campus, which invited white readers to reflect on positions of privilege from Peggy McIntosh\u2019s article <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalseedproject.org\/white-privilege-unpacking-the-invisible-knapsack\">White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack<\/a>, statements such as these:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI am never asked to speak for all the people of my racial group.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI can be confident that my race won\u2019t determine where I can rent or purchase a house.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI can choose makeup or bandages in \u2018flesh\u2019 color and have them more or less match my skin.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cMaybe if we are more intentional about remembering that we are privileged, we can be more intentional about changing our thoughts about racism,\u201d Witmer and her classmate Sarah Regan wrote. \u201cThe fact is that racism still exists in society which means white privilege still exists. Acknowledgement of our privilege is the first step in ending that racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>This I Believe<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The final assignment for the semester was writing \u201cThis I Believe\u201d statements modeled on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/series\/4538138\/this-i-believe\">National Public Radio essay project<\/a>. In them they told personal stories of pain and awakening, quoted civil rights leaders and expressed hope for social healing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>From <strong>Sammy Thomas<\/strong>: \u201cI believe in equality for everyone. It starts with us. No more stereotypes and assumptions of people and races we simply do not know. If we simply treat everyone equally, then hopefully people will pick up on the trend and do the same.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>From <strong>Sarah Regan<\/strong>: \u201cI believe that the only place that anyone will ever \u2018not belong in\u2019 is isolation. Not one person in this world deserves the right to live more than another. Not one person deserves opportunities more than another. Not one person deserves more love and care than another. With our strengths and our weaknesses, with the colors of our skin, with our many beliefs and our many customs \u2013 In the name of Christ, we all belong.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>From <strong>Fabiana Espinal<\/strong>: \u201cI believe we all have the potential to be good, to be knowledgeable and reject ignorance, we all have the potential to be kind.
