{"id":36131,"date":"2017-12-15T11:16:44","date_gmt":"2017-12-15T16:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=36131"},"modified":"2017-12-20T09:20:13","modified_gmt":"2017-12-20T14:20:13","slug":"stem-difference-emus-new-stem-scholarships-funded-national-science-foundation-encourage-issues-based-local-exploration-inter-disciplinary-skill-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/stem-difference-emus-new-stem-scholarships-funded-national-science-foundation-encourage-issues-based-local-exploration-inter-disciplinary-skill-building\/","title":{"rendered":"New STEM scholarships, funded by the National Science Foundation, encourage issues-based local exploration, inter-disciplinary skill-building"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>An innovative new program at Eastern Mennonite University will provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/financial-aid\/departmental-scholarships\">scholarships<\/a> for academically talented students with financial need studying in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).<\/p>\n<p>The $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation funds 14 scholarships as well as other support services for students, including peer tutoring, attendance at conferences, and stipends for student clubs.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/admissions\/apply\/\">applying to EMU<\/a>.<\/aside>\n<p>Scholarship awardees will join a cohort within the STEM Scholars Engaging in Local Problems (SSELP) program, focused on socially-engaged learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere at EMU, our STEM students make real-world, local impacts while gaining skills and knowledge that will prepare them for the professional field or for graduate school,\u201d said Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=tlk326\">Tara Kishbaugh<\/a>, who chairs the biology and chemistry departments and led the faculty committee that wrote the grant. \u201cThe SSELP program builds on this legacy and opens new doors for our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>View<em><strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whsv.com\/content\/news\/EMU-launches-scholarship-program-for-STEM-students-465300523.html\">WHSV&#8217;s coverage<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Who can apply?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or permanent residents intending to study in the following majors are eligible to apply: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/biology\/\">biology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/chemistry\/\">chemistry<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/chemistry\/biochemistry\">biochemistry<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/environmental-sustainability\/\">environmental sustainability<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/math\/\">math<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/math\/cs\/\">computer science<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/engineering\/\">engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Seven scholarships \u2014 three worth $10,000 a year and four of $5,000 a year \u2014 will be awarded to deserving students matriculating in the fall of 2018. The deadline to apply is Feb. 2, 2018.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/financial-aid\/grants\">here<\/a> for more information about financial aid and scholarships.<\/aside>\n<p>An additional seven scholarships will be awarded in the fall of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Selection is based on academic performance, SAT\/ACT scores, an essay, a personal interview and a letter of recommendation from a science or mathematics teacher. (Photo by Andrew Strack)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Career exploration and networking begin during the first year at EMU, with a cohort-based practicum that invites area STEM professionals into the classroom to talk about their work. Local and regional issues in the Shenandoah Valley will also be explored.<\/p>\n<p>SSELP scholars will experience \u201cearly and consistent exposure to inquiry- and problem-based learning through research projects focused on real-world issues,\u201d Kishbaugh said. \u201cWe\u2019ve also built in projects that ask students to work collaboratively across different scientific disciplines, an important skill for graduate school or employment in STEM fields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Employing their skills in \u201cpractical ways that yield tangible results\u201d helps students see their impact on the community and the world, she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttracting and retaining a diverse range of students to the STEM fields benefits us all, both here at EMU and in the broader world,\u201d Kishbaugh said. \u201cWhen our scientists more accurately represent humanity, the potential for scientific breakthroughs and for addressing major problems of today and the future broadens in major ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mentorship, field trips, attendance at conferences, and access to a peer tutoring program are also components of the program.<\/p>\n<p>The program builds on a 2016 National Science Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/10\/professors-collaborate-improve-instructional-skills-stem-classes-thanks-nsf-research-grant\/\">research grant<\/a> awarded to EMU to improve instructional techniques and retention among minority and first-generation college students in the STEM fields.
