{"id":35782,"date":"2017-11-20T09:44:14","date_gmt":"2017-11-20T14:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=35782"},"modified":"2017-12-07T13:49:00","modified_gmt":"2017-12-07T18:49:00","slug":"impact-alumni-friends-israel-palestine-tour-will-lifelong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/impact-alumni-friends-israel-palestine-tour-will-lifelong\/","title":{"rendered":"EMU Alumni and Friends Tour to Israel and Palestine will have &#8216;lifelong impact&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before her recent Eastern Mennonite University Alumni and Friends Tour to Israel and Palestine, <strong>Betty Holsinger Shenk &#8217;75<\/strong> \u201cknew it would be great.\u201d It turned out, though, to be more than that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a trip of a lifetime,\u201d she said. \u201cIts impact will be lifelong.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">The Bible, its characters and the hope we have in Christ are coming alive with dust, sights and tastes.\u00a0 \u00a0<em>\u2014Kendra Martin &#8217;05<\/em><\/aside>\n<p>During two weeks from Oct. 20 &#8211; Nov. 3, 24 participants learned about and discussed the region\u2019s Biblical history, explored archaeological sites, engaged in current social issues of Palestinians and Israeli Jews, and enjoyed local food and the unique geography of the region.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=stutzmal\">Linford Stutzman<\/a> &#8217;84, SEM &#8217;90<\/strong> and his wife <strong>Janet SEM &#8217;91<\/strong>, who have led many semester and summer international cross-cultural trips for EMU, guided the group. The group visited the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/tag\/tent-of-nations\/\">Tent of Nations<\/a>,\u201d a family farm under threat of settlement expansion; heard the firsthand account of how an Arab Israeli became a business partner with an Israeli Jew; and met two guides \u2014 a Palestinian Muslim and an Israeli Jew \u2014 who are both friends and co-workers and who gave the travelers two contrasting perspectives on some lesser known features of Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>The tour was the first for alumni and friends offered by EMU, but more travels in EMU\u2019s unique immersive and educational format are in the works. A trip to Cuba, led by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/bargee\">Elaine Zook Barge<\/a> &#8217;75, MA &#8217;03<\/strong> (conflict transformation) and her husband <strong>Nathan Barge &#8217;84<\/strong>, leaves March 2018. (While the trip is full, a wait list has been started.)<\/p>\n<p>The Stutzmans will lead a fall 2018 Mediterranean Voyage. In summer 2019, Professor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=holsoppj\">Jerry Holsopple<\/a> &#8217;80<\/strong> will lead an exploration of Lithuania\u2019s music, art and culture.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Firsthand experiences come \u2018full circle\u2019 <\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35785\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35785\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35785 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/alumXcul1-1000px-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/alumXcul1-1000px-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/alumXcul1-1000px.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35785\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The first day included learning about life in Bethlehem inside the Wall, and its similarities to Bethlehem at the time of Jesus&#8217;s birth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For some members of the Middle East tour group, the inspiration to attend came from hearing about other people\u2019s travels to the Middle East as part of EMU\u2019s undergraduate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/crosscultural\/\">cross-cultural program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When <strong>Kendra Martin &#8217;05<\/strong> was a student, many of her close friends went on that trip, and returned having been &#8220;impacted, deeply,\u201d she said. Going on this trip brought her \u201cfull circle\u201d and allowed her to experience first hand what her college friends had told her about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maddie Clemens &#8217;16<\/strong> had a \u201clife-changing\u201d semester on the Middle East cross-cultural trip led by the Stutzmans in 2014, and was eager for the rest of her family, including sister Abby <strong>Clemens &#8217;16\u00a0<\/strong>and parents Becky and Doug \u201cto experience the people and places that had so greatly impacted her,\u201d said her mother. This fall, the four participated in the Alumni and Friends Tour, together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe couldn\u2019t have asked for a more enriching experience,\u201d said Becky Clemens.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Connecting the dots<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The trip traced 2,000 years of the biblical story and 4,000 years of human history, and offered Martin something she\u2019d been wanting: motivation to read the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bible was feeling like a big collection of stories about people in places I had no context for,\u201d Martin said. \u201cNow when I read about the Jordan River, for example, in Joshua 1:2 or Matthew 3:6, there is a connection point: \u2018Hey! I&#8217;ve been there! He said that seeing Jesus\u2019s teachings in his historical, political, cultural and geographic context was \u201cenlightening.\u201d But he was also sobered by the Israel and Palestine\u2019s ongoing conflict, and said that before the trip, the prospect of returning to the region had given him \u201cgreat inner tension.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure I would be prepared to see the negative changes which I was anticipating: settlements, the wall, checkpoints and the stories of Palestinian repression by the Israeli military,\u201d he said. \u201cThere were few surprises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clemens said that she is still processing her experiences and the \u201cnew perspectives\u201d she gained from the trip. The Stutzmans, she said, \u201chelped us connect the dots from what we thought we knew about the ongoing conflict in the region to the reality of what it\u2019s like for Palestinian families living under occupation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One especially meaningful experience, Clemens said, was a dinner hosted by a Palestinian Christian family in Beit Sahour who \u201cshared their story with warm hospitality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were encouraged by those on both sides of the conflict who expressed their unwavering commitment to continually seek ways to live as neighbors and bring peace to their land,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35786\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35786\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/11\/impact-alumni-friends-israel-palestine-tour-will-lifelong\/20171025-alumni-cross-cultural-middle-east-002-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-35786\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35786 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20171025-Alumni-Cross-Cultural-Middle-East-002-1000px-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20171025-Alumni-Cross-Cultural-Middle-East-002-1000px-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20171025-Alumni-Cross-Cultural-Middle-East-002-1000px-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20171025-Alumni-Cross-Cultural-Middle-East-002-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35786\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the magnificent ruins of Herod the Great&#8217;s Roman-style port city, Caesarea, famous for the story of Peter and Cornelius, and Paul&#8217;s final journey to Rome.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Linford Stutzman said that he and Janet love the impact they observe on cross-cultural participants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis potential for life-changing moments occurs in random encounters walking the streets of Jerusalem, around a meal in a Palestinian home, standing on the cliffs of Arbel overlooking the Sea of Galilee,\u201d he said. \u201cThe enthusiasm and joy of travelers is our most rewarding part of the journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Shank, who went on the trip, agreed. \u201cThe alumni and friends who attended this trip to the Middle East not only learned and experienced interesting things but became friends in the process.
