{"id":35740,"date":"2017-11-15T08:54:39","date_gmt":"2017-11-15T13:54:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=35740"},"modified":"2018-02-05T09:50:53","modified_gmt":"2018-02-05T14:50:53","slug":"take-back-night-events-honor-survivors-highlight-diverse-impacts-sexual-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/take-back-night-events-honor-survivors-highlight-diverse-impacts-sexual-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Take Back the Night events honor survivors, highlight diverse impacts of sexual violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With #metoo and #Ibelieveyou circulating through social media feeds and news digest, Eastern Mennonite University\u2019s Nov. 7-10 Take Back the Night events focused the community on reflection, listening and frank discussion about issues of sexual violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to hear from outside the community how this abuse is manifested and focus on how we can better support those who have experienced it,\u201d said senior Katrina Poplett, who led the program planning for the second year with senior Jonatan Moser.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35742\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35742\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/11\/take-back-night-events-honor-survivors-highlight-diverse-impacts-sexual-violence\/20171108-take-back-the-night-chapel-002-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-35742\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35742\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20171108-Take-Back-the-Night-Chapel-002-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20171108-Take-Back-the-Night-Chapel-002-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20171108-Take-Back-the-Night-Chapel-002-1000px-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20171108-Take-Back-the-Night-Chapel-002-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Take Back the Night co-leaders Katrina Poplett and Jonatan Moser speak during a Nov. 8 chapel service at Eastern Mennonite University dedicated to honoring survivors of sexual assault.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In an opening event focused on intersectionality, representatives from five campus groups \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/studentlife\/clubs\/websites\/black-student-union\">Black Student Union<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/studentlife\/clubs\/websites\/latino-student-alliance\">Latino Student Alliance<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/studentlife\/clubs\/websites\/iso\">International Student Organization<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/studentlife\/clubs\/websites\/safe-space\">Safe Space<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/studentlife\/clubs\/websites\/third-culture-kids\/\">Third Culture Kids Student Fellowship<\/a> \u2014 were invited to share \u201cstories and statistics about how sexual assault affected that particular group,\u201d said Poplett. \u201cIt was powerful and personal and we closed with a candlelight vigil as a witnessing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Take Back the Night events are held around the United States and around the world. The first march was held in 1975, commemorating the death of a woman who was murdered while walking home alone at night in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>EMU has a long tradition of hosting the annual program, according to Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=dd983\">Deanna Durham<\/a>, faculty advisor to the planning committee.<\/p>\n<p>TBTN hosted several events around campus, including a Wednesday chapel that involved the sharing of stories and poetry.<\/p>\n<p>About 20 participants in the men\u2019s only discussion Wednesday evening \u201ctook the conversation to some really interesting and insightful places,\u201d said Ben Rush, who co-hosted \u201cHow Language Legitimizes: A Second Look At What We Don\u2019t Think of Twice\u201d with Joseph Mumaw and Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/tzs2828\">Tim Seidel<\/a>. \u201cOur goals were to take the conversation away from the overt, symptomatic examples of sexual violence and point it towards a conversation about the way subtle things embedded in language and societal assumptions contribute to the problem.\u201d [<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/pxd\/2017\/12\/12\/take-back-the-night-through-the-lens-of-a-peacebuilder-by-ben-rush\/\">Read Ben&#8217;s blog post about leading this event<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p>A Thursday coffee house offered space for expressive arts and sharing, followed by a session with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/theater\/what-makes-emu-theater-unique\/inside-out\">Inside Out<\/a> playback theater group. Sarah Regan and Ana Hunter-Nickels, representatives of the Social Work is People (SWIP) club, were the hosts.<\/p>\n<p>Friday\u2019s chapel, planned by the EMU <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/studentlife\/counseling\/\">Counseling Center<\/a>, featured Sabrina Dorman, executive director of the local anti-sex trafficking organization New Creation, Inc. This was followed by a walk-through reflective exhibit in the Campus Center.<\/p>\n<p>Eastern Mennonite Seminary also hosted a Tuesday chapel service to engage with themes of #metoo and #Ibelieve you.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s TBTN events were in the second year of a three-year thematic exploration of sexual violence at the micro-, meso- and macro levels, Poplett and Moser said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year was on a micro-level, focused on what was going on here on campus, opening a space for conversations we didn\u2019t see happening,\u201d Poplett said. \u201cThis year, we\u2019re focusing on the meso-level, with organizations and community, and next year will be more of a macro level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The leaders situated TBTN events within recent national events, including U.S. Department of Education decisions related to Title IX.<\/p>\n<p>At all events, counseling center staff were present and other resources were available if students or community members were in need of support.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the students involved in Take Back the Night come to their volunteer work by learning more about systemic issues in their coursework and through clubs such as SWIP or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/studentlife\/clubs\/websites\/peace-fellowship\/\">Peace Fellowship<\/a>.
