Eastern Mennonite University freshman field hockey<\/a> player Bri Miller says that although she\u2019s never been in foster care, she is adopted, and so a fundraiser held recently by the team had special meaning for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt kind of hit home,\u201d she said, \u201cjust because I realize that not a lot of people pay attention to foster kids in the system. I made this my personal mission.\u201d<\/p>\n

Through Together We Rise<\/a>, a nonprofit organization that helps improve the lives of foster children, the team raised funds to purchase \u201cSweet Cases.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each duffel bag contains a blanket, coloring book, crayons, and hygiene kit. After volunteer groups prepare and decorate the bags, they are returned for distribution to children in foster care.<\/p>\n

The team\u2019s goal was to raise enough money for 17 bags \u2014 but they ended up with over $1,200, more than enough for 40 bags, which they decorated last week. As for Miller\u2019s efforts? She was responsible for over a third of the team\u2019s take.<\/p>\n

The team solicited donations for the project, and dedicated a game at which people could make pledges of support. The goalie\u2019s parents, for example, donated $5 for every save.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was our best game as a team,\u201d Miller said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t win, but it was definitely a good game.\u201d The fundraiser aspect, she said, \u201cmade it ten times better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miller did not expect to attend EMU, yet has found a home here.<\/p>\n

\u201cBri is a great example of a student who unexpectedly finds EMU and then experiences it as \u2018home,\u2019\u201d said Coach Ashley Kisner<\/a>. \u201cMany student-athletes have no idea of what EMU is like until they come to visit, and then they love it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miller is studying business administration<\/a>. EMU was \u201cnot her top college choice by any means,\u201d she said. It was too far \u2014 over three hours \u2014 from her Gloucester, Virginia, home, and she doesn\u2019t like cold.<\/p>\n

Even though she wasn\u2019t sure she wanted to play field hockey in college, EMU was out to recruit her, and she decided to visit the campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cI decided, \u2018Let me just visit,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cYou know, how hard can a visit be?\u201d<\/p>\n

So, she did: \u201cAs soon as I got here \u2014 I didn\u2019t even get out of the car yet \u2014 I said, \u2018This feels like home. I\u2019m coming here,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019d never had that feeling, even with my top three other choices. I talked with the coach, and I was just like, \u2018Yep.\u2019 So I committed that day, the first time I was here.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
