{"id":35596,"date":"2017-11-06T10:46:57","date_gmt":"2017-11-06T15:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=35596"},"modified":"2017-11-07T10:36:49","modified_gmt":"2017-11-07T15:36:49","slug":"emu-among-sustainability-award-winners-nitrogen-footprint-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/emu-among-sustainability-award-winners-nitrogen-footprint-study\/","title":{"rendered":"EMU among sustainability award winners for nitrogen footprint study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For its collaborative efforts in the study and reduction of nitrogen pollution, Eastern Mennonite University is among seven institutions to receive a Campus Sustainability Research Award from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aashe.org\/\">Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education<\/a> (AASHE).<\/p>\n<p>The collaborative <a href=\"https:\/\/hub.aashe.org\/browse\/publication\/16745\/The-Nitrogen-Footprint-Tool-Network-A-Multi-Institution-Program-to-Research-and-Reduce-Nitrogen-Pollution\">study<\/a> \u2014 titled &#8220;The Nitrogen Footprint Tool Network: A Multi-Institution Program to Research and Reduce Nitrogen Pollution&#8221; \u2014 also involved Brown University, Colorado State University, Dickinson College, Marine Biological Laboratory of the University of Chicago, University of New Hampshire and University of Virginia. Each is a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.n-print.org\/\">Nitrogen Footprint Tool Network, <\/a>a network that is initiated by the University of Virginia.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">Read about the nitrogen footprint <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/05\/groundbreaking-research-shows-sustainably-produced-foods-are-a-big-factor-in-maintaining-emus-low-nitrogen-footprint\/\">research<\/a>.<\/aside>\n<p>Ten winners from 230 entries were announced at the annual AASHE Conference &amp; Expo in San Antonio, Texas. Entries in three categories were judged on overall impact, innovation, stakeholder involvement, clarity and other criteria specific to each category.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEMU was fortunate to receive an invitation to participate in this leading-edge research project with such prestigious institutions of higher education,\u201d said Jonathan Lantz-Trissel, who contributed to the study as EMU\u2019s former sustainability coordinator.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35598\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35598\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/11\/emu-among-sustainability-award-winners-nitrogen-footprint-study\/20150724-farm-at-willow-run-057-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-35598\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35598\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20150724-Farm-at-Willow-Run-057-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20150724-Farm-at-Willow-Run-057-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20150724-Farm-at-Willow-Run-057-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20150724-Farm-at-Willow-Run-057-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35598\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sustainably produced food is one way to lower EMU&#8217;s nitrogen footprint.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhile we often hear about carbon footprints, nitrogen footprints can be very detrimental as well,\u201d says Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/neufeldd\">Doug Graber Neufeld<\/a>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/category\/cscs\/\">Center for Sustainable Climate Solutions<\/a>. \u201cThis research and collaboration helps to raise awareness about an issue that is not as prominent in the news. Most importantly, there are things we can do to reduce our nitrogen footprint, and this helps us to know how we can reduce the impact of nitrogen on the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Nitrogen from agricultural practices and burning fossil fuels can have detrimental environmental impacts, including on \u201cecosystems, water quality and air quality, including excessive algal blooms that deplete oxygen in water bodies and harm aquatic life, smog, acid rain, forest die-back, stratospheric ozone depletion and an enhanced greenhouse effect,\u201d the study states.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35600\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35600\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/11\/emu-among-sustainability-award-winners-nitrogen-footprint-study\/20160805-chickens-eastern-mennonite-001-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-35600\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35600 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20160805-Chickens-Eastern-Mennonite-001-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20160805-Chickens-Eastern-Mennonite-001-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20160805-Chickens-Eastern-Mennonite-001-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/11\/20160805-Chickens-Eastern-Mennonite-001-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A hen and chicks on campus.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Significantly reducing nitrogen footprints is a feasible goal, it states, and as a result of the study each of the participating institutions \u201chave either adopted nitrogen pollution reduction goals or are considering their adoption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 2017 award winners demonstrate an inspiring passion for solving some of the world\u2019s most complex challenges. They are truly pioneering the campus sustainability movement,\u201d said AASHE Executive Director Meghan Fay Zahniser in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>Award recipients received recognition in a variety of formats as well as a plaque made of Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood from Rivanna, a woman-owned B Corp with a strong commitment to sustainability.
