Freshman\u00a0Rachel Sauder<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(Lyndhurst, Va.\/Stuarts Draft) is making her mark on the soccer field – and not just because of her cleats. The midfielder jump-started Eastern Mennonite University in both of their wins last week, accounting for two goals and two assists.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Saturday’s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0key win at Randolph, Rachel broke open a scoreless game with a goal\u00a01:48<\/span><\/span>\u00a0into the second half, triggering a 4-1 win. In the win at Hollins, she started the day with a cross to assist on a goal just 16 seconds into play. Rachel scored EMU’s third goal and assisted on another.<\/p>\n

She added yet another assist on the Royals\u2019 lone goal in a 1-0 win at Guilford to wrap up the regular season, and heads into the postseason tied for sixth in the ODAC with six assists.<\/p>\n

EMU\u2019s soccer women tied for seventh in the final ODAC standings, and take the eight seed into\u00a0this Wednesday\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0quarterfinal game at top seeded Virginia Wesleyan.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was exciting to get some more wins,\u201d Rachel commented after the late-season games. \u201cIt felt good to get some wins and play well together.\u201d<\/p>\n

The transition from high school to college soccer has been fairly smooth for Rachel.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt hasn\u2019t been too terrible,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was a little different at first just because you\u2019re playing with 30 new people, but once I got used to my teammates it wasn\u2019t too difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coach Ted Erickson has noticed how his first year player has seamlessly joined the team\u2019s existing chemistry, both on the field and off it.<\/p>\n

\u201cRachel has come in and added a consistent piece to our midfield,\u201d said Coach Erickson. \u201cShe visually sees the game well and can help develop an attack for our offensive chances. As the season has progressed, outside of being a strong player, she has really come in and complimented the other incoming players and they together have enhanced our team culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rachel prepared for her first season of collegiate soccer with a good deal of off-season training, including summer running and pickup soccer. As for the rest of college, she is learning on her feet.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it\u2019s definitely a lot harder than high school academically, and you have to learn to manage your time,\u201d she added. \u201cSo that was a bit stressful for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rachel is keeping herself busy with 18 credit hours.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s been good. I\u2019ve really been enjoying college…I feel like you\u2019re kind of more on your own, so it\u2019s nice to take that step.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rachel is currently exploring different areas of study, centered around the STEM fields.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now I\u2019m an engineering major, but I\u2019m actually switching it,\u201d Rachel said. \u201cI\u2019m not entirely sure what I want to do. I\u2019m going to take some chemistry classes and see if I like that a little more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rachel\u2019s years on EMU\u2019s turf are just getting started, and she has hopes and goals for the future of the women\u2019s soccer team.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d really like to be one of those teams that they\u2019re like, \u2018oh, they\u2019re really good,\u2019 you know, like one of the Bridgewaters or the Roanokes or the Lynchburgs,\u201d Rachel said. \u201cSo that\u2019d be really cool to see.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also enjoys the community surrounding soccer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe girls are all super nice,\u201d Rachel said. \u201cSo I\u2019d really like to continue that same team chemistry through all four years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rachel first got into soccer because her older brother played.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was little, I kind of just did a lot of the stuff he did. So I played rec soccer when I was little and just kept playing,\u201d Rachel said.<\/p>\n

But she didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n

\u201cI played varsity basketball all four years of high school, along with soccer,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

When she has free time, Rachel likes to take art classes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like hiking, too,\u201d she said. \u201cJust doing stuff outside.\u201d<\/p>\n
