At its gala concert this fall, the Eastern Mennonite University music department<\/a> will showcase various ensembles and a commissioned symphony celebrating the university\u2019s Centennial.<\/p>\n

The wind and jazz ensembles led by Robert Curry<\/a> and the orchestra conducted by Professor Joan Griffing<\/a> will perform, and then the chamber orchestra \u2014 along with a choir of 58 voices from Emulate, the University Choir and Chamber Singers \u2014 will present the symphony, conducted by the composer, Professor Ryan Keebaugh<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The concert, from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, in Lehman Auditorium, is the music department\u2019s major fundraising concert of the year, and proceeds from the suggested $10\/person donations will benefit the music scholarship fund. [To donate, click here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n

\u201cThe gala concert is always one of our department\u2019s highlights,\u201d said Griffing. \u201cWe\u2019re especially pleased that this year\u2019s concert brings together so many voices and instruments to celebrate the legacy and traditions of music during EMU\u2019s Centennial.\u201d<\/p>\n

Symphony<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Keebaugh was commissioned by EMU to write the symphony in honor of the university\u2019s first century. He has been thinking about and working on it for three years, and wrote five versions before landing on the final.<\/p>\n

The result is Symphony No. 1 for baritone, choir and string orchestra, an \u201cethereal type of peaceful, calming music\u201d with the text \u201cDona nobis pacem: Grant us peace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The symphony begins with a prayer that choir members read at their own pace, creating an \u201cundertone rumble of individual prayer.\u201d But right at the moment when the strings begin playing, the choristers say the same prayer, this time all together, and \u201cthe whole community comes together, with this idea of peace,\u201d Keebaugh said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to show the ethos of EMU,\u201d he said. \u201cI looked at, \u2018What have I experienced? What have I been taught? What do I learn from my colleagues about what it means to be here at EMU, to be in a community like this?\u2019 I wanted to paint that picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s as simple as it gets, but it hits at the depth of EMU,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

An answer<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Keebaugh joined the music department faculty in 2013, and said that the department shows \u201clove, compassion and generosity\u201d for its students.<\/p>\n

\u201cMusic really can embody a community of love\u201d that Keebaugh said is \u201cour answer\u201d to the world\u2019s problems, distress and disasters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe nurture all of our students,\u201d he said. \u201cWe change our musical structure and curricula to fit what\u2019s going to make them successful. It\u2019s not just \u2018Here\u2019s our box, and you have to fit it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Creative people, Keebaugh knows firsthand, all have different ways of working. He composes with paper and pencil, during regular early morning work sessions that begin at 3 a.m., and only uses a computer in final stages, he said \u2014 \u201cbut that\u2019s just me.
