Sanyal to speak on fatty liver disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Arun J. Sanyal, professor of medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), will present <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/cms-links\/science-seminars\/docs\/Sanyal-seminar.pdf\">Fatty Liver Disease: A Silent Killer in Our Communities<\/a> as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/science-seminars\/\">Suter Science Seminar<\/a> series this fall at Eastern Mennonite University.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar, which takes place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017 in Science Center room 106, is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past 10 years, much of Sanyal\u2019s research has focused on clinical studies of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the role of the microbiome in NAFLD and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and the development of effective therapy for NASH.<\/p>\n<p>Sanyal teaches in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at VCU, where he is also the executive director of Education Core for the Center for Clinical and Translational Research at VCU. He also serves as chair of the steering committee for the National Institutes of Health nonalcoholic steatohepatitis clinical research network.<\/p>\n<p>Sanyal received his MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) degree from Maulana Azad Medical College of Delhi University, India, and MD from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.<\/p>\n<p>He completed his internal medicine residency at Texas Tech University and a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at VCU, where he has remained on the faculty as a professor and clinician. He is past president and secretary of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and is active in numerous professional organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The Suter Science Seminars are made possible by the sponsorship of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/science-seminars\/daniel-b-suter-endowment\/\">Daniel B.
