Professor Emerita <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emustories.com\/margaret-gehman\/\">Margaret Martin Gehman<\/a> was the university\u2019s first female graduate to earn a doctorate \u2014 in art education in 1962. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emustories.com\/alumna-of-the-year-1999-esther-k-augsburger\/\">Esther Augsburger<\/a> was the college\u2019s first graduate with an art degree, and became an advocate for the arts at EMU and for Christian art worldwide. The campus features two of her installations: <i>Guns into Plowshares<\/i>, <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/10\/forging-peace-guns-plowshares-sculpture-dedicated-emu\/\">recently relocated to EMU<\/a> from Washington D.C., and <i>Love Essence<\/i>, near the seminary.<\/p>\n<p>In her thanks to the committee for including the arts in the weekend, curator <b>Ashley Sauder Miller <\/b>\u201803 noted how artists embody EMU\u2019s \u201cServing, Leading, Transforming\u201d\u00a0Centennial theme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe artist is a servant, silently showing up,\u201d she said. \u201cWe lead through vision.\u201d Artists are transformed by creating works that transform others, too, she said, by helping them \u201csee things in a different way.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><em>Read more about each artist <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/12\/artists-use-varied-media-reflect-emu-past-present-future-centennial-installation\/\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Unique media<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35343\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35343\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/10\/10x10x100-centennial-artists-offer-500-new-perspectives-emu\/barbara\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-35343\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35343\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/10\/Barbara-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/10\/Barbara-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/10\/Barbara-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/10\/Barbara.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35343\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barbara Gautcher.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The artists \u2014 Barbara Gautcher, <b>Rachel Herr<\/b> \u201804, <b>Zachary Nafziger <\/b>\u201801, and <b>Melinda Steffy <\/b>\u201803, along with Miller\u2014 each selected a specific focus to express in a unique medium.<\/p>\n<p>When creating her abstract collage paintings for \u201cThrough the Window,\u201d Gautcher, an art teacher for 32 years at EMS and EMU, thought of the past century of people who, while \u201cstudying, writing, praying and daydreaming,\u201d looked through windows on campus for \u201ca view into the landscape, a vicarious peek at people passing by, and a vision into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Herr\u2019s contribution began with a photograph of a female friend who she thought embodies \u201ctoday\u2019s deeply Mennonite, modern woman.\u201d Herr then reproduced parts of that photograph onto 96 of her 100 squares as a reflection on change in women\u2019s roles in the Mennonite church. We\u2019re each making our way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miller used mixed media \u2014 from paints to graphite to embroidery floss to donated materials from EMU\u2019s facilities management, and more \u2014 to image chairs on campus or shown in historic photos.<\/p>\n<p>In his Tiffany-style stained-glass panels housed in four-sided wooden frames, Nafziger expressed \u201cideas of tradition, history, location, connections to each other and Earth,\u201d he said \u2014 \u201cthe light and love of culture and humanity that can be found as the basis for EMU\u2019s core values and ethics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He decided to make his works into lamps because, he said, \u201cMennonites love things to have purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35345\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35345\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/10\/10x10x100-centennial-artists-offer-500-new-perspectives-emu\/melinda\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-35345\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35345 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/10\/Melinda-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/10\/Melinda-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/10\/Melinda-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/10\/Melinda.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35345\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Melinda Steffy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Steffy\u2019s 100 paintings of color reinterpretations of \u201cPraise God from whom\u201d \u2014 widely known as the \u201cMennonite anthem,\u201d or simply by its number in the old (606) or new hymnal (118) \u2014 portrayed a \u201cfour-part worldview\u201d that \u201cembraces diversity, listens to and draws out marginalized voices, and acknowledges that no single part holds all the answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four-part church singing is less about being perfect than about being present and participating, Steffy said, and following the opening ceremony, she led exhibit attendees gathered around her paintings in singing the hymn.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Responses<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35347\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35347\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/10\/10x10x100-centennial-artists-offer-500-new-perspectives-emu\/20171013-10x10x100-013-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-35347\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35347 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/10\/20171013-10x10x100-013-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/10\/20171013-10x10x100-013-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/10\/20171013-10x10x100-013-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/10\/20171013-10x10x100-013-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rachel Herr&#8217;s work.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Steffy\u2019s work \u2014 specifically her inclusion of imperfection \u2014 left at least one visitor \u201cin awe.\u201d \u00a0Valerie Lane, who with her husband Darren was on campus visiting their daughter Michaela, a first-year student in the visual and communication arts program, said finding EMU was a \u201cGod thing.\u201d The arts education at EMU, she said, is broader than would be offered at a traditional art school.<\/p>\n<p>Augsburger said that each artist in the exhibit \u201cis different from the others. Each one is very creative.
