{"id":34961,"date":"2017-09-21T08:58:37","date_gmt":"2017-09-21T12:58:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=34961"},"modified":"2018-08-15T12:10:32","modified_gmt":"2018-08-15T16:10:32","slug":"book-publication-crowns-career-seminarys-tenured-teacher-scholar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/book-publication-crowns-career-seminarys-tenured-teacher-scholar\/","title":{"rendered":"Book publication crowns career of seminary\u2019s most tenured teacher and scholar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In her new book, <em>The Irony of Power: The Politics of God in Matthew\u2019s Narrative <\/em>(Pickwick, 2017<em>),\u00a0<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/weaverdj\">Dorothy Jean Weaver<\/a>, professor of New Testament at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/seminary\">Eastern Mennonite Seminary<\/a>, brings together essays on a theme in the Gospel of Matthew that has preoccupied her for much of her working life.<\/p>\n<p>The book also serves as a valedictory for Weaver\u2019s three-plus decades at EMS. Last January, she announced to her seminary colleagues she would not seek renewal of her contract upon its expiration next year.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being the senior member of the EMS faculty, Weaver owns the distinction of having been the first woman to hold a full-time position at the seminary. She was named an instructor in 1984. Three years later, after receiving her doctorate in New Testament from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Va., she was appointed to an assistant professorship.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34962\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34962\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/09\/book-publication-crowns-career-seminarys-tenured-teacher-scholar\/pickwick_template\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-34962\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34962\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/09\/Weaver-book-cover-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/09\/Weaver-book-cover-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/09\/Weaver-book-cover-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/09\/Weaver-book-cover-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/09\/Weaver-book-cover.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Irony of Power (Pickwick, 2017)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Essays probe the true nature of power<\/h3>\n<p>In her prologue, Weaver says that, throughout her career, she has found herself returning again and again to \u201cthe same set of urgent and persistently relevant \u2018real-world\u2019 questions\u201d \u2013 namely, those concerned with issues of power and powerlessness, violence and nonviolence, and the ways in which the \u201cpolitics of God\u201d confound human expectation.<\/p>\n<p>What Weaver calls her \u201ccentral insight\u201d \u2013 that the Gospel of Matthew\u2019s \u201cironic subversion of all standard definitions of political power\u201d is directed toward the proclamation of a new \u201cGod\u2019s-eye\u201d vision of such power \u2013 is one that \u201chas continued to energize\u201d her study of Matthew since the early \u1fbf90s.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, her attention was first drawn to a paradox in Matthew\u2019s version of the \u201cGood News.\u201d Why could the Gospel\u2019s three great autocrats \u2013 Herod the Great, Herod the Tetrarch, and Pilate \u2013 not accomplish their declared objectives?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll three were credited, on one level, with having absolute power and authority,\u201d Weaver points out. \u201cYet they are shown, on another level, to be powerless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For instance, in the story of Herod the Great (the menacing potentate in the account of Jesus\u2019 birth, and the flight of Jesus and his family to Egypt), we read of a despotic ruler who is frustrated in his attempt to kill the infant child about whom he has heard a messianic prophecy.<\/p>\n<p>This and other examples of the irony Weaver finds at the heart of Matthew\u2019s Gospel \u2013 and, indeed, the entire New Testament \u2013 formed the basis for her essay titled, \u201cPower and Powerlessness\u201d (originally published in 1996), and ultimately, she says, for the other essays collected in <em>The Irony of Power<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet it was not until her sabbatical at Jerusalem\u2019s Tantur Ecumenical Institute in 2010-11 that Weaver first began to explore the idea of bringing the essays together in a single volume. There she received encouragement from noted Old Testament scholar Samuel Pagan of the Jerusalem Center for Biblical Studies.<\/p>\n<p>Expressions of enthusiasm also came from such prominent colleagues and associates as Willard Swartley, professor emeritus of New Testament at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, and David Rhoads, professor emeritus of New Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>In his foreword to <em>The Irony of Power<\/em>, Rhoads says that Weaver \u201ccorrectly recognizes that Matthew is a story about power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She discerns, Rhoads says, \u201cthat the conflict in the Gospel is not between Jesus and the Jews but between \u2026 the oppressed and the oppressors, the powerless and the powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s note:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tantur.org\/news-events\/news\/the-irony-of-power-tantur-affiliated-scholar-dorothy-jean-weavers-recent-publication\/\">Read an August 2018 review of the book by New Testament scholar\u00a0and journalist Reta Finger<\/a> published by the Tantur Ecumenical Institute, University of Notre Dame, one site of Weaver&#8217;s sabbaticals where several of the essays were written.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Career summed up in three \u201cM\u2019s\u201d \u2013 Mennonite, Matthew and Middle East<\/h3>\n<p>Throughout Weaver\u2019s career, teaching and scholarship have been coupled with personal peacebuilding in a part of the world notoriously resistant to such initiatives \u2013 the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1995, she has led 18 tours of the region, and has spent multiple sabbaticals lecturing and conducting research in several of its most prominent centers for the study of biblical texts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy experiences in the Middle East have sensitized me profoundly to issues of power and powerlessness,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Weaver recalls a moment of sharp clarity from another sabbatical she spent at Tantur in 2003.
