Rather, it\u2019s about being part of a caring community. In August, 37 student \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/studentlife\/residence-life\/community-advisors\/\">community advisors<\/a>\u201d (CAs) spent the nine days leading up to the reopening of campus for the fall semester experiencing for themselves \u2014 and preparing to build, for their fellow students \u2014 that important dimension of university life.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34608\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34608\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34608 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/08\/20170821-CA-bbq-wth-cabinet-2000px-5-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/08\/20170821-CA-bbq-wth-cabinet-2000px-5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/08\/20170821-CA-bbq-wth-cabinet-2000px-5-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/08\/20170821-CA-bbq-wth-cabinet-2000px-5-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/08\/20170821-CA-bbq-wth-cabinet-2000px-5.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34608\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Community advisors and residence life staff gather for a cookout hosted by the president&#8217;s cabinet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to earning certification in mental health first aid and first aid\/CPR, the CAs \u2014 sometimes along with ministry and pastoral assistants, who were also preparing for the school year \u2014 attended numerous training sessions. A sampling of topics included diversity and identity, led by professors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/pannellm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Melody Pannell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/ct765\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Celeste Thomas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, sex and relationships led by Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/holsoppj\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jerry Holsopple<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, power and systems led by Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/db252\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">David Brubaker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and restorative justice practices and conflict styles led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mcc.org\/learn\/what\/restorative-justice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lorraine Stutzman Amstutz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, restorative justice coordinator for Mennonite Central Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A series of meals prepared and hosted by the president\u2019s cabinet and various other departments and faculty reinforced the sense of community and showed that EMU is \u201can institution that cares deeply,\u201d said Scott Eyre, lead residence director. [Meet the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/studentlife\/residence-life\/staff\/\">Residence Life staff<\/a>.]<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur faculty and staff care for our students and make it easy to enter into conversations and to learn from them, and to invite them into spaces and places. There are a lot of fingerprints on what we do in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/studentlife\/residence-life\/\">Residence Life<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u2018All based on care\u2019<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As imperative and useful as the skills she learned in the days of training will be, <strong>Abigail Shelly<\/strong>, a sophomore social work major from Collinsville, Mississippi, was most inspired by something less tangible. \u201cI think through seeing the different residence directors and people leading, seeing how much care they put into this before we\u2019ve gotten here, has made me feel like I\u2019m better equipped to reflect that on the people who are going to be hall residents,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34611\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34611\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34611\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/08\/20170825-Abigail-Shelly-Community-Advisor-007-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/08\/20170825-Abigail-Shelly-Community-Advisor-007-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/08\/20170825-Abigail-Shelly-Community-Advisor-007-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/08\/20170825-Abigail-Shelly-Community-Advisor-007-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sophomore community advisor Abigail Shelly said that the care residence life staff show each other will &#8220;trickle down to the residents.&#8221; (Photo by Macson McGuigan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All CAs are strongly encouraged to connect intentionally with each pair of roommates early in the first semester, an idea Eyre picked up several years ago from a CA whose hallway \u201cflourished.\u201d That\u2019s just one way CAs will help their diverse hallway communities function in a healthy way, which isn\u2019t an easy task, said Eyre. Hall members can include Mennonites and non-Mennonites, people with different racial and political backgrounds, people with various experiences of what \u201ccommunity\u201d means, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHow do you invite people into a space where all that can translate? How can you help them care, and know and want to be with each other?\u201d Eyre said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Such attempts also help students make better choices, said Eyre, because \u201cwhen you know the people you live with in a residence hall, they can come into your decision-making.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">\u201cEMU changes lives even if you don&#8217;t want your life changed while you\u2019re here.\u201d<\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shelly says that the big picture of care encompasses even the interactions between residence life staff and students who may break rules.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s all based on care. When I heard it last year, I thought, \u2018OK, it\u2019s a Christian university, they need to say that\u2019 \u2014 but seeing that in action and in conversation? I&#8217;d say the sessions have been great, but it&#8217;s more about seeing how the RDs care for each other, and then in turn care for us, and then how that will trickle down to the residents, as well. Their cups are completely overflowing,\u201d Shelly said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u2018Investments\u2019<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For all their work, Eyre said that CAs might not see the return on the investments they make in people even though those returns may well be very real. \u201cSomewhere down the line, five, ten years from now, people who came here as 18-year-olds to live in this community and maybe don&#8217;t quite get it now, or are not really interested in it, all of a sudden they might find themselves married, having kids, working a job, whatever it is. Some of these deposits that these CAs made in their lives early on, right now, they might look back and say, \u2018That experience is really helping me right now.\u2019 Maybe the CA will never know, and the residence director will never know, and a professor will never know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But sometimes they will know. Eyre can remember \u2014 from when he was a CA over a decade ago \u2014 people whose words and actions showed that they didn\u2019t like being at EMU. \u201cBut some of those people work here now,\u201d he said. \u201cA lot of those people give to the school. (Photo by Macson McGuigan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Elizabeth Eutsler<\/strong>, a biology major from Waynesboro, Virginia, also credits her freshman year CA with getting her interested in the role. That CA encouraged her to apply for the job, Eutsler said, even though \u201cI didn\u2019t have the confidence to think that I could do it.\u201d Now she\u2019s a senior and entering her third year as a CA: \u201cIt was intimidating, but I was like, \u2018I\u2019m going to do this,\u2019 and I did it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eutsler said she gets excited about meeting new people and incoming first-year students, but this year it was something else that made her recommit to the program. \u201cI realized that I had such a great support system in residence life that I couldn\u2019t not come back. It\u2019s such a great community to be in, and it\u2019s just really made me feel at home as a person, and so I decided to stay, because I knew I couldn\u2019t miss out on that aspect of my life.
