Three women working in peacebuilding will be honored during a special Daughters for Life Foundation Gala Dinner<\/a>\u00a0in Washington D.C. The Sept. 16 event at Busboys and Poets is co-sponsored by Eastern Mennonite University\u2019s Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The honorees are Leymah Gbowee<\/a>, Nobel Peace Prize winner and EMU graduate; Ronit Avni<\/a>, a\u00a0Peabody Award-winning social entrepreneur and media producer; and Suhad Babaa<\/a>, the\u00a0executive director at Just Vision<\/a>, an organization dedicated to increasing media coverage and\u00a0support for Palestinian and Israeli grassroots leaders working for peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe dinner will celebrate and honor women who have made long-lasting impacts in the global community, while raising scholarship funds for promising female scholars to attend graduate\u00a0school at CJP,\u201d said Daughters for Life<\/a> founder Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since 2010, nearly 400 girls and women from the Middle East have been supported by the\u00a0organization to continue their education in the region or abroad. This will be the first graduate-level scholarship.<\/p>\n

Recipients are chosen for their academic achievements, but also for their dedication to\u00a0improving the lives of girls and young women in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re are excited by the possibilities of working with Daughters for Life to expand graduate\u00a0school opportunities for women peacebuilders of the Middle East,\u201d said CJP Executive Director\u00a0Daryl Byler<\/a>, who spent six years with his wife, Cindy, as Mennonite Central Committee\u2019s representative for Iran, Iraq, Jordan and Palestine\/Israel. \u201cOur master\u2019s degree program in\u00a0conflict transformation<\/a> combines academic rigor with a true appreciation for the skills,\u00a0knowledge and experience that each student brings from their native context, and we look\u00a0forward to learning from the significant gifts of Daughters for Life scholars.\u201d<\/p>\n

CJP has strong ties to the Middle East, with current grant-funded projects in Iraq, a host of\u00a0alumni from the region, and frequent faculty and staff travels for trainings in the region.<\/p>\n

CJP has 603 graduates working in 78 countries, as well as thousands of participants who have attended peacebuilding and trauma trainings. The center offers a master’s degree in conflict transformation and in restorative justice<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The partnership has its roots in a 2014 visit to EMU by Abuelaish, a prominent physician who\u00a0wrote the memoir I Shall Not Hate<\/a>\u00a0about his life, the tragedy that befell his family, and his vision for a\u00a0peaceful future between Israelis and Palestinians.<\/p>\n

In 2009, he lost three daughters to an Israeli bombing. Now associate professor at the Dalla\u00a0Lana School of Public Health<\/a> at the University of Toronto, Abuelaish began the Daughters for\u00a0Life Foundation to empower young women to continue their education.<\/p>\n

Abuelaish has won numerous awards for his peace activism, and has been nominated three\u00a0times for the Nobel Peace Prize.<\/p>\n
