By the end of her trip, however, her parents\u2019 decision to adopt the faith made sense to her in a way it never had before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I truly connect with the Anabaptist perspective,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Anabaptism was a 16th-century movement in Europe to separate church and state. At a time when the dominant religion of Catholicism and infant baptism was tied to government, founders believed that church should be free of government inference, and that adults should be baptized on a confession of faith.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34216\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34216\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/07\/european-cross-cultural-experience-examines-womens-reformation-history\/hannah-menefee-preaching\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-34216\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34216 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/07\/Hannah-Menefee-preaching-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/07\/Hannah-Menefee-preaching-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/07\/Hannah-Menefee-preaching.jpg 685w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hannah Menefee takes a turn preaching in Hutwill, Switzerland.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Payne was one of 11 students \u2013 nine women and two men \u2013 who traveled through Austria, Switzerland, and Germany from May 7 to June 17 as participants in a spring cross-cultural semester, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/crosscultural\/programs\/radical-europe-2017\/\">Radical Europe: 16th and 21st Century Expressions of Anabaptist\/Mennonite Identity<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students explored Anabaptism&#8217;s roots in central Europe, with a special focus on the crosscurrents of gender and class that shaped the nascent movement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI doubt that even just five years ago I would have been able to lead a tour that focuses on Anabaptist women in the Reformation. The recent monuments, museum exhibits, documentation, and secondary sources we have now, especially the new work among Austrian and Canadian historians, made this tour possible,\u201d said Schmidt, who collaborated with Austrians during her six-month sabbatical in Vienna last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/crosscultural\/\">cross-cultural<\/a> was one of five offered this summer by the university, which has required some form of cross-cultural study for more than 30 years. Student groups are accompanied by EMU faculty with years of experience living and working in destination countries, a dynamic which offers unique perspectives and engagement with the local culture.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Support for Reformation spanned all segments of society<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The program was led by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/kds273\">Kimberly D. Schmidt<\/a><\/strong>, professor of history at EMU and director of its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/\/wcsc\/\">Washington Community Scholars&#8217; Center<\/a>, as well as <strong>The Rev. Seth Miller \u1fbd07, MDiv \u1fbd15<\/strong>, pastor of Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson, Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p>The starting point was Vienna. The EMU group then proceeded west through the Austrian Alps into Switzerland. In 2017 it was Streett&#8217;s turn.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Against the backdrop of this year\u2019s worldwide observance of the 500th anniversary of the birth of the Protestant Reformation, students relived the theological and socio-political upheaval that set the stage for multiple challenges to the hegemony of the Roman Catholic Church, arising from numerous localities and social quarters.<\/p>\n<p>The ecclesiastical and magisterial authorities of the day regarded Anabaptism as a radical and dangerous sect, as it challenged the authority of both church and state. Those who aligned themselves with the movement \u2013 which encouraged people to read and interpret the Bible for themselves \u2013risked imprisonment, torture, and death.<\/p>\n<p>The EMU students were interested to learn, however, that far from being a movement only of the most desperate and downtrodden, the early Anabaptists represented a broad cross-section of society.<\/p>\n<p>Schmidt names Linda Huebert Hecht, a Canadian historian, as a leader among the handful of scholars in Europe and North America who have drawn attention to the contributions of women, ranging from aristocrats, to members of trade guilds and independent businesswomen, to peasant and farm women.<\/p>\n<p>Among the former was Helene von Freyberg of Kitzb\u00fchel, on whose castle \u2013 Schloss M\u00fcnichau \u2013 the students paid a call at the outset of the trip.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her involvement in the founding of three separate congregations, Baroness von Freyberg made her castle a sanctuary for those fleeing the <em>T\u00e4uferj\u00e4ger<\/em> \u2013 the \u201cAnabaptist hunters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No less remarkable is the example of the nameless Anabaptist woman memorialized in an open-air museum in Niedersulz, about 30 miles north of Vienna. Among the approximately 80 historic buildings displayed there is a modest farmhouse. Inside, the students could see and touch the heavy iron chain kept fastened to the ankle of the house\u2019s Anabaptist matron, lest she go about the countryside proselytizing.<\/p>\n<h3>History sleuthes<\/h3>\n<p>Assigned work for the class drew on these and similar experiences. One project cited by students as having been particularly formative was the \u201chomeplace search.\u201d It made use of the vast amount of genealogical data compiled by Hanspeter Jecker of Bienenberg Theological Seminary in Liestal, Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>Students with family members who descended from the early Anabaptists determined which localities in Switzerland their ancestors formerly inhabited. Each then teamed up with a member of the group who did not have an Anabaptist background.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34218\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34218\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/07\/european-cross-cultural-experience-examines-womens-reformation-history\/emu-cross-cultural-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-34218\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34218 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/07\/EMU-cross-cultural-2-300x199.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/07\/EMU-cross-cultural-2-300x199.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/07\/EMU-cross-cultural-2-768x511.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/07\/EMU-cross-cultural-2-1024x681.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/07\/EMU-cross-cultural-2.jpeg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A selfie stick comes in handy to capture some of the group with a local guide in the Swiss Alps.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThese pairs of students had to go out and use public transportation to get to these various places in Switzerland,\u201d Schmidt explains.<\/p>\n<p>They were deeply moved, she says, to see with their own eyes the beautiful Alpine villages the early Anabaptists had to forsake in hopes of escaping religious persecution.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional accounts of Anabaptism&#8217;s origins have placed it in Zurich, citing prominent clerics such as Jacob Hutter, Ulrich Zwingli, and Conrad Grebel as its founders.<\/p>\n<p>However, modern historians have taken the view that the Anabaptist movement emerged through the coalescence of several independent movements.<\/p>\n<p>For the \u201cRadical Europe\u201d participants, Miller says, the homeplace-search exercise provided persuasive evidence of this \u201cpolygenesis\u201d account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome students learned things about their families, and the communities their families came from,\u201d he says, \u201cthat tended to move them away from the notion that Anabaptism had a single expression that moved out of one city, and that only a few people started it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Visiting the site of secret worship<\/h3>\n<p>Payne, a second-generation Anabaptist, differed from several members of the party who could trace their descent to some of the earliest Anabaptist converts in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34229\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34229\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/07\/european-cross-cultural-experience-examines-womens-reformation-history\/tauferhole-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-34229\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34229 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/07\/TAuferhole-1000px-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/07\/TAuferhole-1000px-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/07\/TAuferhole-1000px-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/07\/TAuferhole-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Tauferhohle near Baeritswil, an isolated place where Anabaptists came to worship safely. (Courtesy of Madalynn Payne)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fellow EMU student <strong>Timothy Martin<\/strong>, for example, was able to visit a castle in the Swiss canton of Emmental in which a distant ancestor remained imprisoned for 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy own parents joined an Anabaptist congregation when I was young,\u201d says Payne, a junior majoring in mathematics and secondary education. \u201cWhile growing up, I watched them make conscious choices to uphold Anabaptist principles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this way, she says, she learned \u201cthe distinctive characteristics of the faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet only during this summer&#8217;s trip did she embrace for herself, deliberately and wholeheartedly, the core tenets of Anabaptism.<\/p>\n<p>It happened one evening, Payne says, as she was giving her parents an account of a particularly exciting day of hiking in the Swiss Alps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe visited a cave where some of the early Anabaptists secretly met for worship,\u201d she says. \u201cI suddenly realized that the principles I stand for today are the same ones for which those faith-ancestors risked their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In that moment, Payne says, she was confronted by a number of questions with which she continues to wrestle. Would she, like those early Anabaptists, be willing to die for her faith? Would she be brave enough to defy ostracization by cultural elites to defend what she avows to be true?<\/p>\n<p>The Anabaptist heroes and heroines who faced persecution, and worse, did so knowing \u201cexactly what they believed and why they believed it,\u201d Payne says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, I identify with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor\u2019s note: While the EMU cross-cultural focused on the historical roots of Anabaptism, the modern global family of Christian churches rooted in the Anabaptist movement is widespread and diverse. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mwc-cmm.org\/\">Mennonite World Conference<\/a>, the representative body, includes in its membership \u201cone international association and 102 Mennonite and Brethren in Christ national churches from 56 countries, with around 1.4 million baptized believers in close to 10,000 congregations.
