The organization\u2019s name refers to President Abraham Lincoln\u2019s call to recognize commonalities in the midst of conflict, made during his first inaugural address on the eve of the Civil War in 1861.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">Listen to Peter Yarrow and the audience sing &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=apI5SPpNRMM&amp;feature=youtu.be\">Puff the Magic Dragon<\/a>&#8221; at EMU.<\/aside>\n<p>SPI director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/goldberw\">Bill Goldberg<\/a> says Yarrow\u2019s presence on campus during the annual peacebuilding institute was \u201cspontaneous serendipity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe share with Peter a long-term commitment to social justice and peace, and are honored to have him and the board members of Better Angels here,\u201d Goldberg added. \u201cIt\u2019s a special opportunity for us and for SPI participants from around the world to hear his message of unity and humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33774\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33774\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/06\/harmonizing-amidst-hostility-musician-peter-yarrow-talented-experts-teach-conflict-transformation-processes\/20170614-spi-david-campt-tough-conversations-022-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33774\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33774\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/06\/20170614-SPI-David-Campt-Tough-Conversations-022-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/06\/20170614-SPI-David-Campt-Tough-Conversations-022-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/06\/20170614-SPI-David-Campt-Tough-Conversations-022-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/06\/20170614-SPI-David-Campt-Tough-Conversations-022-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33774\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Campt walks his class through a dialogue process during Summer Peacebuilding Institute at Eastern Mennonite University.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Several other experts, each of whom work specifically in the context of conflict transformation, were on campus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\/courses\/#session-five\">this week<\/a>: author and speaker <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidcampt.com\/\">David Campt<\/a>, who works in the area of race relations; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\/instructors\/kay\/\">Kay Pranis<\/a>, a globally recognized trainer on circle processes; and <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\/ezine-ed\/\">Ed Brantmeier<\/a>, a professor at James Madison University who specializes in peace education. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/kmm2222\">Katie Mansfield<\/a>, director of the Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience program, also offered a self-care course with Katie Ornelas.<\/p>\n<h3>Sharing <em>and<\/em> listening<\/h3>\n<p>A deep concern about civic diviseness and hostility in the United States led Goldberg and SPI faculty to <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/02\/prepare-civic-engagement-tough-conversations-polarized-times-2017-summer-peacebuilding-institute\/\">develop and adapt several SPI courses<\/a> this summer aimed at helping community members and organizations work in civic engagement, conflict facilitation and dialogue processes. This focus will continue in 2018 at SPI, Goldberg says.<\/p>\n<p>Campt, a nationally recognized expert on race dialogue, led a course this week titled \u201cTough Conversations: Turning Conflict into Connectedness.\u201d On Friday, Campt and his students facilitated a model deliberative dialogue process with SPI participants using polling technology and small group discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Campt also offered a &#8220;white allies&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harrisonburgfaithinaction.org\/?tribe_events=white-ally-4-0-a-skills-based-workshop-to-gain-effective-tools-for-honest-conversations-about-race-with-white-friends-relatives-and-neighbors\">workshop<\/a> Saturday, June 17, at Asbury Methodist Church. Degner spoke about the power of listening, rather than talking in dialogue, and his campaign, called the \u201cListening Corps,\u201d to bring people together through facilitated dialogue.<\/p>\n<h3>Harmonizing with Peter Yarrow<\/h3>\n<p>Yarrow&#8217;s concert drew SPI participants and community members, some of whom had deep personal connections to the singer and his music.<\/p>\n<p>Yarrow invited sharing, which led to a touching moment with Tom DeWolf, who works in interracial dialogue and healing as executive director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/coming-to-the-table\/\">Coming to the Table<\/a>.
