{"id":33460,"date":"2017-05-16T14:29:42","date_gmt":"2017-05-16T18:29:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=33460"},"modified":"2017-06-20T09:16:32","modified_gmt":"2017-06-20T13:16:32","slug":"festivals-silver-anniversary-season-mixes-old-new","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/festivals-silver-anniversary-season-mixes-old-new\/","title":{"rendered":"Festival\u2019s silver anniversary season mixes the old and the new"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Audience favorites from the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival&#8217;s infancy will share billing with works not previously heard \u2013 including a film score by a scion of one of Hollywood\u2019s royal families \u2013 when the festival stages its 25<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> season June 11-18 at Eastern Mennonite University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From the beginning, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/nafzigkj\">Kenneth Nafziger<\/a>, SVBF\u2019s conductor, artistic director, and co-founder, the intention has been to make each festival so different from those which preceded it that no one could\u00a0ever say, \u201cbeen there, done that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBach is the constant,\u201d Nafziger says, \u201cbut the material around him is always changing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year\u2019s festival will feature, on its opening night, such crowd-pleasing fare as Bach\u2019s Brandenburg Concerto in G major, No. 4; and his Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major (source of the famous \u201cAir on the G String\u201d);\u00a0<\/span>as well as, to close the second festival concert on Friday the 16th, the Symphony No. 8 in B minor (\u201cUnfinished\u201d) of Franz Schubert.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Opening the second concert, SVBF concertmaster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/griffing\">Joan Griffing<\/a> will team with violist Diane Phoenix-Neal and cellist Beth\u00a0Vanderborgh on the Sinfonia Concertante in A major of Carl Phillipp Stamitz, a near-contemporary of Bach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33466 alignright\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/05\/20160615-SVBF-Downtown-Noon-Concert-011-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/05\/20160615-SVBF-Downtown-Noon-Concert-011-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/05\/20160615-SVBF-Downtown-Noon-Concert-011-1000px-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/05\/20160615-SVBF-Downtown-Noon-Concert-011-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The fourth Brandenburg Concerto, which has been played several times previously at the SVBF, will this year exhibit an early music texture consistent with what Bach\u2019s own musicians may have produced, thanks to the use of recorders in place of the usual flutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recorder players Nancy Garlick and David McGown will be joined by violin soloist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/drm2236\">David McCormick<\/a>, a Baroque specialist and founder of the Charlottesville-based ensemble Three Notch\u2019d Road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">McCormick, who will \u00a0appear for the first time on the SVBF stage, is also the festival\u2019s newly appointed executive director. He says SVBF is characterized by a \u201cwonderful sense of community\u201d in which not only the performers share, but also music-lovers from all over the Eastern seaboard and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs someone who lives and breathes the music of Bach\u2019s period, I\u2019m thrilled to be part of this festival,\u201d McCormick says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In keeping with the festival\u2019s \u201cBach is just the beginning\u201d credo, it will also serve as a platform, the second and third festival concerts, for several recent works by Los Angeles-based composer and violinist Maria Newman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to a pair of string concerti, Newman, daughter of nine-time Academy Award-winning composer\/conductor Alfred Newman, will bring to EMU\u2019s Lehman Auditorium one of the more than one-dozen scores she has written for vintage silent films. At the third festival concert, on Saturday the 17<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the 1914 Mary Pickford feature \u201cCinderella\u201d will be screened with live accompaniment from the festival orchestra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>An additional highlight on Saturday night will be its excursion into Cuban music. Nafziger, a frequent participant in cultural exchanges with Cuba, will lead the orchestra in La bella cubana, by Jos\u00e9 Silvestre White, and Volver atras, by SVBF violinist Eleonel Molina.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the festival\u2019s other defining characteristics \u2013 its eagerness to promote the development of young musicians \u2013 will be showcased in a work on the opening-night program, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\u2019s Concerto for Flute, Harp, and Orchestra in C major. The teenage soloists are Emma Resmini of Fairfax Station, Va., on flute, and harpist Morgan Short, of Roanoke, Va.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite their youth, Resmini and Short both have ties to the festival which extend back several summers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Among the other soloists returning for this year\u2019s SVBF are violist Scott Hosfeld, clarinetist Leslie Nicholas, and bass-baritone Daniel Lichti.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The festival concludes on Sunday, June 18, with a non-sectarian service of worship such as might have been conducted during Bach\u2019s heyday as a church musician in Leipzig, Germany. It will feature the Magnificat in D major \u2013 yet another piece brought back from the festival\u2019s first year.\u00a0<\/span>In addition to Lichti, soloists include sopranos Veronica Chapman-Smith and Heidi Kurtz, countertenor Joel Ross, and tenor Brian Thorsett.
