{"id":33417,"date":"2017-05-11T09:55:31","date_gmt":"2017-05-11T13:55:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=33417"},"modified":"2018-10-03T09:25:23","modified_gmt":"2018-10-03T13:25:23","slug":"diane-randall-friends-committee-national-legislation-champions-faith-based-political-advocacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/diane-randall-friends-committee-national-legislation-champions-faith-based-political-advocacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Diane Randall, with Friends Committee on National Legislation, champions faith-based political advocacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The power of faith-based political advocacy was the theme of a lecture by Diane Randall, executive secretary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcnl.org\/\">Friends Committee on National Legislation<\/a> (FCNL), as part of Horizons of Change lecture and meal series at Eastern Mennonite University.<\/p>\n<p>Four lectures remain in the series, which will take place during each of the five sessions of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\">Summer Peacebuilding Institute<\/a>, an annual program of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a> (CJP).<\/p>\n<p>FCNL\u2019s Annual Spring Lobby Weekend, a four-day conference with training, networking, policy briefings, community and advocacy, is regularly attended <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2015\/03\/peacebuilding-graduate-students-join-friends-committee-on-national-legislation-for-lobby-weekend\/\">by CJP graduate students<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/graduate-programs\/conflict-transformation\/\">conflict transformation<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/restorative-justice\/\">restorative justice<\/a> programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re fortunate to hear from Diane about her experiences and expertise today,\u201d said CJP Practice Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/ack972\">Amy Knorr<\/a>, who introduced Randall and has attended several lobby weekends with students. \u201cI especially appreciate her deep lifelong commitment to building a more just and peaceful world and the passion she brings to this work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Randall is joined in her Washington D.C. office by several staff, including <strong>Theo Sitther<\/strong> <strong>MA \u201813<\/strong>, who directs the peacebuilding program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe essential work FCNL does is to lobby Congress,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are not a think tank though we try to be thoughtful. We are not a research center, though we take other research and use it to lobby. We stay focused on what we do well and partner with others to be most effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FCNL surveys more than 700 Friends Meetings every two years to determine priorities, such as health care, climate change, peacebuilding policy, and mass incarceration, as well as core peace and justice issues.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33428\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33428\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/05\/diane-randall-friends-committee-national-legislation-champions-faith-based-political-advocacy\/20170510-spi-horizons-lunch-diane-randall-018-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33428\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33428\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/05\/20170510-SPI-Horizons-Lunch-Diane-Randall-018-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/05\/20170510-SPI-Horizons-Lunch-Diane-Randall-018-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/05\/20170510-SPI-Horizons-Lunch-Diane-Randall-018-1000px-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/05\/20170510-SPI-Horizons-Lunch-Diane-Randall-018-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33428\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The lecture and meal series continues through four sessions of Summer Peacebuilding Institute.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe ability to work with others in coalition is essential,\u201d she said, adding that Quakers have a reputation for \u201cholding neutral space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt our best,&#8221; Randall says, &#8220;we stay open to how God is moving and how the spirit is moving among us and that means we don\u2019t close off people who may not share different beliefs from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FCNL also trains people to advocate through grass-roots networks. \u201cIn some cases, constituents can have a remarkable impact and even change their vote, but it doesn\u2019t happen in one visit. You have to go again and again and bring new allies each time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Randall was raised Lutheran but joined the Friends in her thirties, drawn to the core value of non-violence. She began working with FCNL in 2011, initially wrestling with the confluence of the spiritual with the political.<\/p>\n<p>FCNL helps to elevate and amplify \u201cthe voices of people who feel called to work with elected officials with clarity and commitment both for what they\u2019re advocating for and for the long term,\u201d she said. \u201cThere is a moral hunger\u2026 people around the world are longing for a sense of justice. That can mean different things to different people, but we should be having that debate about what that means, instead of about personalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Upcoming Horizons of Change events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>May 24<\/strong> (lunch, 12:30-2:30 p.m.): <em>Jean Claude Nkundwa<\/em> MA \u201914 will be presented with the <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/03\/burundi-peace-activist-jean-claude-nkundwa-receive-cjp-distinguished-service-award\/\">2017 CJP Peacebuilder of the Year Award<\/a>. Nkundwa is executive secretary of Burundi Citizen Synergy, an organization he helped to found to create joint advocacy and communication strategies in Burundi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>May 29<\/strong> (dinner, 5:30-7:30 p.m.): <em>Benjamin Douglas <\/em>and <em>Jonathan Kuttab<\/em>, a leading human rights attorney and peace activist, bring diverse perspectives on Israel-Palestine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>June 7<\/strong> (dinner, 5:30-7:30 p.m.): Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/jrm2249\"><em>Johonna Turner<\/em><\/a>, assistant professor of restorative Jjustice and Peacebuilding at EMU, speaks on \u201cLeading From Within\u201d when organizing against oppression, repression and violence.
