Now Helen Ours takes up the story.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>Say \u201csnack shop \u201cand you\u2019ll conjure a lot of warm memories for alumni of Eastern Mennonite College\u2014and yes, we\u2019ll say EMC because that was the institution\u2019s name when the Snack Shoppe was in its heydey.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33005\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33005\" style=\"width: 207px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/04\/snack-shoppe-part-ii-longtime-manager-helen-talks-favorite-campus-gathering-place\/helen-ours-82-1-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33005\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33005 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/Helen-Ours-82-1-1000px-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/Helen-Ours-82-1-1000px-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/Helen-Ours-82-1-1000px.jpg 691w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33005\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Helen Ours and Lois Shirk in the Snack Shoppe, 1982.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Food has always been an important part of the community experience at EMU. Decades ago, the Snack Shoppe \u2013 as it was spelled on the north entrance sign where many enjoyed a large swing set before entering \u2013 was a central gathering place for food and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere wasn\u2019t a 7-11 on the corner, so this is where you came,\u201d says <strong>Helen Ours<\/strong>, manager from 1974 through the mid-1990s. \u201cIt was one place where boys and girls could be together too,\u201d she notes with a smile.<\/p>\n<p>The menu included homemade pastries, cookies, chili, hamburgers and hot dogs, soups, and sandwiches. Rhubarb and apple pie were seasonal favorites. Packaged candy, chips, pretzels and other snack food was sold.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Like coming \u2018home\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It was more than the food, however, that drew people in. Ours and her co-workers created a place that felt like home. The warm greeting by name, remembering people\u2019s favorite foods, the hospitality and ambiance \u2013 yes, ambiance \u2013 were key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose booths made the place,\u201d remembered <strong>Ted Swartz \u201989, MA \u201992<\/strong>, in a recent conversation about campus past and present. \u201cIt felt like a 1950s soda shop or something\u2026intimate, cozy, friendly. A lot of important things happened there \u2013 socializing, strategizing, studying \u2026 just what I\u2019d call \u2018community.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33003\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33003\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/04\/snack-shoppe-part-ii-longtime-manager-helen-talks-favorite-campus-gathering-place\/1984-emc-snack-shoppe-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33003\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33003 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/1984-EMC-Snack-Shoppe-1000px-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/1984-EMC-Snack-Shoppe-1000px-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/1984-EMC-Snack-Shoppe-1000px-768x545.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/1984-EMC-Snack-Shoppe-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33003\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Delbert Wenger &#8217;86 works in the Snack Shoppe in 1984.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI remember going to the Snack Shop after chapel and checking my mailbox next to the bookstore [all in the lower level of the same building] and then heading for my coffee and cheese danish or funny cake [a pie with a white cake topping and gooey chocolate bottom layer] courtesy of Helen,\u201d recalls <strong>Joani Schweitzer Miller \u201987<\/strong>. \u201cIt was a favorite study and conversation spot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ours employed as many as 37 work-study students per semester, covering shifts from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. most days. <strong>Delbert Wenger \u201986<\/strong> and his sister <strong>Donna Wenger Widrick \u201990<\/strong> are one of several sets of siblings who worked for Ours during her tenure.<\/p>\n<p>Helen probably remembers every student who worked for her, says Delbert Wenger. \u201cShe\u2019d also probably remember all those athletes who often \u2018subsidized\u2019 their hunger after dining hall suppers with something good from the menu. Steak sandwiches were a popular item for hungry athletes,\u201d he remembers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33007\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33007\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/04\/snack-shoppe-part-ii-longtime-manager-helen-talks-favorite-campus-gathering-place\/helen-ours-80-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33007\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33007 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/Helen-Ours-80-1000px-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/Helen-Ours-80-1000px-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/Helen-Ours-80-1000px-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/Helen-Ours-80-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Another view of the cozy shop, with Helen and Lois.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cGoing to the snack shop after basketball practice back in the late \u201880s was the closest thing most of the guys could do that felt like home,\u201d recalls <strong>Kirby Dean \u201892<\/strong> and head men\u2019s basketball coach at EMU since 2002.\u00a0 \u201cThe biggest part of that is that Helen treated all of us like we were her own sons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wenger also recalls the trust Ours put in the students by giving them building keys and training them to open, close and run the business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a great atmosphere. Helen was a mother as much as a supervisor to all of us. I think we all loved going to work,\u201d says Widrick.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Snack shop moves to heart of campus<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ours, who now works in the EMU dining hall, says she actually began her career in food service in the campus snack shop, but located in a different place on Mount Clinton Pike.<\/p>\n<p>Ours worked there from 1948 through the spring of 1950, under manager by <strong>Lydia Slabaugh Martin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1958, the new gym and student center opened where the University Commons now stands (which is, in fact, a renovation and addition to the old gym and student center). The new snack shoppe opened with boothes seating and a large horseshoe-shaped bar.<\/p>\n<p>Ours no longer worked at the college, but she occasionally saw President Myron Augsburger at high school athletic events (their children were the same age and attended Eastern Mennonite High School).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33006\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33006\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/04\/snack-shoppe-part-ii-longtime-manager-helen-talks-favorite-campus-gathering-place\/helen-ours-85-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33006\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33006 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/Helen-Ours-85-1000px-220x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/Helen-Ours-85-1000px-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/04\/Helen-Ours-85-1000px.jpg 733w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33006\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Margaret Kauffman, 1985.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Augsburger\u2019s regular request to Ours: Bring your cooking and managerial skills to the Snack Shop.<\/p>\n<p>Ours obliged in 1974. She worked first with <strong>Doris Miller<\/strong>. Together they added more food to the menu and spruced up the shop with new window coverings and dining ware.<\/p>\n<p>Within a year, <strong>Vera Kuhns<\/strong> and <strong>Margaret Kauffman<\/strong>, both of whom had husbands working in the physical plant, joined her staff.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ours\u2019 support continues<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Today\u2019s students go to the Royals\u2019 Den in the University Commons to grab a quick grilled sandwich, salad or drink. Many pre-1996 alumni who work on campus still call it the \u201csnack shop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cDen\u201d atmosphere is different and the snack shop era is passed. Thanks to Helen Ours and her colleagues, however, many friendships were deepened, problems were solved, and souls fed through the hospitality and home-like comfort she cooked up in the Snack Shop during its glory days.<\/p>\n<p>But in her role today with the EMU dining hall, Helen remains a beloved community member, greeting students by name and sometimes with a hug. She is special to athletic team members in particular. She and her husband support them by attending every game or match they can get to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoy watching Helen interact with my basketball players now,\u201d says Dean. \u201cIt reminds me so much of how she treated me when I was a player hanging out in the snack shop. There is a special relationship that develops there \u2026 food, hospitality, genuine care. It is hard to explain, but you know it when you see it.
