They traveled to the March 2-5 conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with engineering faculty members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/jzt2844\">Esther Tian<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/Professional Page - Daniel King Daniel King graduated with a bachelor's degree from Goshen College, where he majored in Physics and Music. (Photo by Andrew Strack)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis ASEE conference was comprised of engineering programs at large and small universities from over 15 states, so we were quite happy to see our students receive this external validation and encouragement about the quality of their project and presentation,\u201d said King.<\/p>\n<p>The win is especially significant considering the competition included large engineering programs from University of Florida, Virginia Commonwealth University, West Michigan University, West Virginia University and Mercer <span class=\"m_935392577469883630gmail-oc_program_concurrentSessionPaper\"><span class=\"m_935392577469883630gmail-oc_program_concurrentSessionPaperAuthors\">University.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The chapter, which was established in 2013, has also won other accolades for their projects, says Tian, club advisor, who praised the students\u2019 dedication to their work. \u201cOur <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2014\/04\/emu-engineering-students-take-second-in-regional-competition-with-solar-greenhouse-design\/\">greenhouse project<\/a> won second place at the ASEE Southeastern Section conference in 2014, and our solar-powered chicken coop project competed at the ASEE national conference in 2015. I am very pleased with the work of our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like all ESW projects, the bike and the poster were team efforts. Club members Ben Zook, Collin Longenecker, Austin Engle, Ben Stutzman and Andrew Troyer also contributed to the poster, which was designed during the fall 2016 semester.<\/p>\n<p>At the poster session, Grove and Paetkau said professors and judges showed considerable interest in the project itself.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the bike was to contribute to EMU\u2019s variety of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/sustainability\/\">sustainability initiatives<\/a> on campus by channeling \u201cthe waste of mechanical energy generated by exercise machines,\u201d the researchers said. \u201cTo reduce the unnecessary waste, the club saw the opportunity to add an alternative form of energy created by gym goers on campus \u2026 The stationary bicycle would serve as a way to promote sustainability and give an opportunity for individuals to generate clean energy while exercising.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32744\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32744\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/03\/engineering-students-ride-stationary-bike-project-big-win-asee-poster-design-contest\/sustainable-bike\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32744\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32744 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/03\/sustainable-bike-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/03\/sustainable-bike-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/03\/sustainable-bike-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/03\/sustainable-bike.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32744\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The winning poster, selected from 61 others in the first- and second-year design division. (Courtesy of ESW)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fundings from an <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/04\/earthkeepers-sustainability-mini-grant-competition-rewards-grassroots-innovation-on-campus\/\">Earthkeepers mini-grant<\/a> helped start the project, which drew on skills, time and labor of several club members, as well as welding provided by physical plant employee Henry Bowser. A 350-watt gear reduction electric motor replaced the back wheel, a chain connected pedals and motor crankshaft, and a grid tie inverter used to convert direct current to alternating current compatible with EMU\u2019s grid.<\/p>\n<p>Several attendees at the poster session suggested that storage of the energy was the next step. \u201cMore than asking us questions about the project, they gave us suggestions about what to do with the project in the future,\u201d Grove said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey really pushed us to think about how we could use this project to create change,\u201d Paetkau added.<\/p>\n<p>He said being at the conference among engineers and other engineering students was worth the trip itself. \u201cIt really made me excited about what we can do in the future, especially seeing some of the junior\/senior projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grove was pleased to see that EMU \u201cstacks up\u201d to other programs. \u201cWe\u2019re a smaller university, and there were some big ones there, so it\u2019s great to see we are competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to attending conference activities, the group also did some sight-seeing, including a visit to Arecibo Observatory, a rainforest, one of the island\u2019s three bioluminescent bays, seaside cliffs, and of course, the beach.<\/p>\n<p>Though a special treat for all, these excursions were especially interesting to Paetkau, who hopes to focus his engineering studies on biomimicry, an emerging field that seeks to develop innovation based on nature\u2019s models and systems to solve complex challenges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A poster about a stationary bike project at Eastern Mennonite University took top honors among 61 other competitors in the first- and second-year undergraduate design team division at the American <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/engineering-students-ride-stationary-bike-project-big-win-asee-poster-design-contest\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"more-link\">... read more <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">about Engineering students ride stationary bike project to a big win in ASEE poster design contest<\/span><\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":32742,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[14715,17562,8845,17364,5643,14139,5708],"tags":[15037,14265,15420],"feature":[17427,17423,17426,17241],"class_list":["post-32740","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-campus-life","category-digest","category-emu-at-lancaster","category-engineering","category-environmental-sustainability","category-student-profiles","category-sustainability","tag-daniel-king","tag-engineering","tag-esther-tian","feature-emu-home-page-feature","feature-featured-undergrad","feature-myemu-feature","feature-news-feature"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.6 -
