The knowledge, which can be \u201cintellectual, intuitive, bodily and emotional,\u201d provides opportunities for internal and interpersonal peace.<\/p>\n<p>Facci, the author of <em>On Human Potential: Peace and Conflict Transformation Fostered Through D<\/em><em>ance<\/em> (LIT Verlag, 2011), came to EMU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a> on a recommendation from CJP co-founder and well-known conflict transformation pioneer John Paul Lederach, now professor of international peacebuilding at University of Notre Dame.<\/p>\n<p>Here, she continued her research towards a doctorate in peace and conflict studies at University Jaume I (Castell\u00f3n, Spain).<\/p>\n<p>Her presence also helped EMU move towards further exploration of a potential Master of Fine Arts program focusing on the arts and media in peacebuilding and justice advocacy work.<\/p>\n<h3>Arts-based peacebuilding has strong foundation at EMU<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31702\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/02\/visiting-scholar-researches-peace-dance-emu-explores-mfa-program-arts-peacebuilding\/paula-facci-is-a-visiting-scholar-in-residence-during-the-fall-2016-semester-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31702\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31702\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/02\/20161209-Paula-Facci-Dancing-Research-007-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Paula Facci is a visiting scholar in residence during the fall 2016 semester.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/02\/20161209-Paula-Facci-Dancing-Research-007-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/02\/20161209-Paula-Facci-Dancing-Research-007-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/02\/20161209-Paula-Facci-Dancing-Research-007-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Discipleship Center becomes a dance studio for Paula Facci&#8217;s workshops.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHearing about Paula\u2019s research and practical work helped us think about the challenges and potential benefits of developing this MFA,\u201d said Academic Programs Director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/jsd636\">Jayne Docherty<\/a>. \u201cWe give priority to visitors who are doing innovative work that matches our own growing edges. In this regard, Paula was a great visitor, because we have been exploring the role of arts in peacebuilding and justice-promoting activities for a number of years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The prospective MFA program, which would be lodged in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/vaca\/\">Visual and Communication Arts<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/theater\/\">Theater<\/a> department, would also benefit from CJP\u2019s rich history of peacebuilding practitioners who use and share arts-based approaches.<\/p>\n<p>Facci\u2019s focus on dance also connected with the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/cjp\/star\/\">Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience<\/a> program where Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/kmm2222\">Katie Mansfield<\/a> is also working on a doctorate with an emphasis on body movement and trauma\/resilience work, Docherty said.<\/p>\n<h3>Movement can transform conflict<\/h3>\n<p>During the semester, Facci led weekly arts-based participatory research on \u201cdance as a method to elicit conflict transformation\u201d with a group of students, faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposal was to facilitate a space where we could explore movement and its potential to elicit transformation and unfold peace, through exercises based on dance, guided breathing and imagery, meditation and theater,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Then Facci collected reflective interviews from the dancers to inform her doctoral research.<\/p>\n<p>Facci\u2019s scholarly work is rooted in her own training in meditation, as well as arts-based movement for social change, such as Theater of the Oppressed and Theater for Living, as well as Gabrielle Roth\u2019s 5Rhythms dance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31701\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31701\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/02\/visiting-scholar-researches-peace-dance-emu-explores-mfa-program-arts-peacebuilding\/paula-facci-is-a-visiting-scholar-in-residence-during-the-fall-2016-semester-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31701\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31701\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/02\/20161209-Paula-Facci-Dancing-Research-002-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Paula Facci is a visiting scholar in residence during the fall 2016 semester.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/02\/20161209-Paula-Facci-Dancing-Research-002-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/02\/20161209-Paula-Facci-Dancing-Research-002-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2017\/02\/20161209-Paula-Facci-Dancing-Research-002-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31701\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Brazilian native, Facci has worked in arts-based movement for social change with organizations around around the world.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Brazilian native has also studied peace and conflict, international relations, nonprofit organizations, foreign languages, and human rights; taught these subjects in various universities and schools; and worked for Brazil\u2019s Funda\u00e7\u00e3o F\u00e9 e Alegria (Faith and Joy Foundation), a movement for integral popular education and social promotion for children and youth.<\/p>\n<p>But before all this, she danced. Starting with folk dances at school and family parties, Facci then began taking formal lessons at age seven.
