In her Jan. 20 chapel talk, \u201cA Mennonite at the Pentagon: Human Security in an Age of Terror.\u201d Dr. Lisa Schirch<\/a>, research professor with the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a> at Eastern Mennonite University, reflected on building relationships with U.S. military and NATO leaders. Over the last 10 years, she has provided training on how to promote human security at military bases around the U.S. and in Europe.<\/p>\n

Many Mennonites \u2014 and non-Mennonites as well \u2014 avoid people they disagree with, including the military, by not acknowledging or shunning, she said. \u201cIn Matthew [5:43-48], Jesus suggests we walk toward those with whom we disagree and those who are different. We greet them. We ask questions. We recognize their humanity. This is God\u2019s security strategy. It is not just a moral strategy. It is also effective.\u201d<\/p>\n
