(Photo by Andrew Strack)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>In a time of anti-immigrant fervor, religious distrust, and high political polarization, the peace-building Mennonites in Harrisonburg provide one robust model of how to transcend nationalism and bridge divides. Though relatively modest in size, they are showing how even a small group can affect major, positive change, shaping the hearts and minds of the local ecosystem.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>\u201cMennonites have a unique global outlook on the inclusion and celebration of folks from other cultures,\u201d RaMona Stahl, the Welcome Center coordinator for HCPS [Harrisonburg City Public Schools], said. Stahl, who earned a degree in social work from Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, says she did not say the Pledge of Allegiance in school as a young girl, believing her loyalty was to all peoples. \u201c\u2018God and country\u2019 \u2014 those things really shouldn\u2019t be wed,\u201d she said. \u201c\u2018God and countries,\u2019 yes. But not \u2018country,\u2019 singular.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">Alumni in many professions work to empower residents in our multicultural communities. Read more in <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/crossroads\/\">the latest Crossroads alumni magazine<\/a>.<\/aside>\n<p>Significantly, Carnock sought through the Sojourners article to elaborate on specific findings from a report, published in October with co-researcher Amaya Garcia, titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newamerica.org\/education-policy\/policy-papers\/critical-mass\/\"><em>A Critical Mass: Creating Comprehensive Services for Dual Language Learners in Harrisonburg<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral characteristics \u2026 imbue the community with an uncommon energy and ethos around immigrants, refugees, and dual language learners,\u201d writes Carnock in the report. One of those \u201ccatalysts\u201d for \u201cprogressive energy\u201d is a large population of Mennonites, as well as the proximity of EMU, which has been educating teachers since its founding in 1917.<\/p>\n<p>The Mennonite faith <span class=\"_Tgc\">\u2013<\/span> ably summarized in the article by Stahl \u201985, and home-school liaison Rick Castaneda \u201998 <span class=\"_Tgc\">\u2013<\/span> embraces diversity. (EMU Archive)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the article, Carnock says that one of the best expressions of Mennonite influence, and of EMU\u2019s global perspective, is the \u201cdiffusion\u201d of these values into the work of local schools, which serve one of the highest populations of Limited English Proficient students in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 112 teachers and administrators employed by Harrisonburg City Public Schools have an undergraduate or graduate degree from EMU, according to recent statistics collected from the district.<\/p>\n<p>This small population of EMU-prepared educators has an outsized impact, HCPS Foreign Language Coordinator Jeremy Aldrich tells Carnock, comparing them to \u201cyeast that makes the whole dough rise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The article and report highlight several initiatives for English Language Learners, among others in the district that involve EMU-educated staff and teachers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an expanded Welcome Center to comfortably process non-native-speaking students, led by Stahl;<\/li>\n<li>more home-school liaisons, such as Castaneda;<\/li>\n<li>and a growing Spanish-English dual immersion program in four of the district\u2019s five elementary schools, with more than half of the teachers, including Camila Pandolfi \u201912, and administrators holding an undergraduate or graduate degree from EMU.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_31132\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31132\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/12\/english-language-learners-benefit-emu-educators-influenced-anabaptist-values-harrisonburg-virginia-reports-researcher-sojourners-magazine\/_mg_0898-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31132\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31132 size-thumbnail\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/MG_0898-1000px-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"_mg_0898-1000px\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31132\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camila Pandolfi &#8217;12 teaches in the Harrisonburg City Public Schools dual immersion program.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cMore than ever, EMU and the broader Mennonite community are unique assets for Harrisonburg and the region,\u201d Carnock writes. \u201cStrongly-held beliefs about inclusion \u2014 religious or otherwise \u2014 are powerful when they translate into tangible action.
