{"id":31088,"date":"2016-12-19T11:20:30","date_gmt":"2016-12-19T16:20:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=31088"},"modified":"2025-10-15T11:36:23","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T15:36:23","slug":"artists-use-varied-media-reflect-emu-past-present-future-centennial-installation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/artists-use-varied-media-reflect-emu-past-present-future-centennial-installation\/","title":{"rendered":"Artists use varied media to reflect on EMU past, present and future for Centennial installation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In selecting artists for Eastern Mennonite University\u2019s Centennial art installation, curator <strong>Ashley Sauder Miller \u201903<\/strong> and the Centennial Visual and Performing Arts Subcommittee sought a range of media, styles and approaches.<\/p>\n<p>Each selected artist will create, over the coming months, <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/05\/calling-all-artists-apply-now-to-help-celebrate-eastern-mennonite-universitys-centennial-with-the-10x10x100-project\/\">100 new 10-inch x 10-inch new works<\/a> relating to the Centennial theme of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/centennial\/\">Eastern Mennonite University 1917-2017: Serving, Leading, Transforming<\/a>,\u201d the history of Eastern Mennonite University (EMU)\/Eastern Mennonite School (EMS), or a depiction of EMU\u2019s vision for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really pleased with these artists, which include two stylistically different acrylic painters, a mixed-media artist, a stained glass artist and a photographer,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/centennial\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28180\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-28180 size-medium\" style=\"margin-top: 25px !important;\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/05\/EMU100-logo-color-300x141.jpg\" alt=\"EMU color logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/05\/EMU100-logo-color-300x141.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/05\/EMU100-logo-color-768x362.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/05\/EMU100-logo-color.jpg 855w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The following selected artists, who join Miller in the undertaking, are already hard at work on their projects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Barbara Gautcher<\/strong>, art teacher for 32 years at EMS and EMU.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rachel Herr \u201804<\/strong>, Harrisonburg, Va.;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Zachary Nafziger \u201801<\/strong>, Weyers Cave, Va.;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Melinda Steffy \u201803<\/strong>, Philadelphia, Pa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">Visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/centennial\/\">EMU Centennial website<\/a> for more information about 2016-17 events.<\/aside>\n<p>The committee also invited <strong>Esther Augsburger \u201872<\/strong>, of Harrisonburg, Va., to participate in the project.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Esther Augsburger&#8217;s participation in developing the art program at Eastern Mennonite School and Eastern Mennonite University continues to be an inspiration to our academic community,\u201d said <strong>Louise Otto Hostetter &#8217;79<\/strong>, chair of the Centennial committee.\u00a0\u201cShe has a lifelong commitment of\u00a0honoring God through her gift of artistry. Esther also played a significant role of supporting art on the global level by organizing Christian artists&#8217; conferences in Asia, Indonesia and Eastern Europe.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The \u201c10x10x100 Project\u201d culminates in an exhibition in the Margaret Martin Gehman Gallery of University Commons during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/homecoming\/\">Homecoming and Family Weekend<\/a>, Oct. 13-15, 2017.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0Esther Augsburger: Honored artist<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31093\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31093\" style=\"width: 201px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/12\/artists-use-varied-media-reflect-emu-past-present-future-centennial-installation\/art-esther\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31093\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31093 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/ART-Esther-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"art-esther\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/ART-Esther-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/ART-Esther.jpg 633w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31093\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Esther Augsburger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Esther Augsburger\u2019s <em>Love Essence<\/em>, a sculpture depicting the reverential act of footwashing, graces the hillside beside the seminary building. She and her husband, President Emeritus Myron Augsburger (1965-1980), played a pivotal role in the acceptance and eventual flourishing of the arts at EMU. During Myron Augsburger\u2019s tenure, the campus experienced the first instrumental music, drama courses, faculty-mentored theater productions and a new art major.<\/p>\n<p>Esther Augsburger was, fittingly, the program\u2019s first graduate in 1971, though she took all of her art courses at Madison College (now James Madison University). \u201cAt the time, only art for elementary school teachers was offered at EMC,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Augsburger founded the arts program at the high school that same year and taught for the next nine years, while earning a master&#8217;s in sculpture from JMU in 1979.<\/p>\n<p>She holds three honorary doctorates, has organized art conferences and displayed her artwork in nine countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so honored to participate in this exhibition for the Centennial of the university where I got my start in art,\u201d she said. \u201cHaving been the first student to graduate in the major, I feel especially honored.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Barbara Gautcher<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31094\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31094\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/12\/artists-use-varied-media-reflect-emu-past-present-future-centennial-installation\/zportrait\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31094\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31094 size-thumbnail\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/zportrait-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"zportrait\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31094\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barbara Gaucher<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gautcher, an art teacher, has a long association with both the high school and the university. \u201cI have spent 32 years teaching art to high school students at Eastern Mennonite School, many of whom went on to EMU,\u201d she says, adding that 32 years is \u201cnearly one-third of the Centennial.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her project title, \u201cThrough the Window,\u201d references the many windows at both schools:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\"><em>What does one see when looking out a window?\u00a0 For 100 years students, teachers, professors, and future doctors, missionaries, pastors, scientists, businessmen, artists, musicians, etc. have looked out the windows of EMU and EMS while studying, writing, praying and daydreaming.\u00a0Windows give us a view into the landscape, a vicarious peek at people passing by, and a vision into the future. I am using my sketches and photos of the views outside the windows of EMU and EMS to explore abstract acrylic paintings.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Rachel Herr<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31096\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31096\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/12\/artists-use-varied-media-reflect-emu-past-present-future-centennial-installation\/art-rachel-herr\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31096\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31096 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/ART-Rachel-Herr-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"art-rachel-herr\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/ART-Rachel-Herr-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/ART-Rachel-Herr-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/ART-Rachel-Herr-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/ART-Rachel-Herr.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31096\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rachel Herr<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rachel Herr \u201904 has created a project that explores \u201cthe way women\u2019s roles have changed and continue to change, in the Mennonite church.\u201d She plans to photograph a female friend who embodies \u201ctoday\u2019s deeply Mennonite, modern woman,\u201d and then grid the black and white portrait onto 100 small squares.<\/p>\n<p>Herr, who majored in art and minored in business, is also a culinary artist. She works as a pastry chef and chocolatier.<\/p>\n<p>A fond memory of her time at EMU was the cross cultural semester in South Africa. \u201cI think of that semester often, enjoy keeping up with others who were on the trip and still wrestle with issues we studied and witnessed firsthand there such as choice and inequality.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0Zachary Nafziger <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Zachary Nafziger \u201901 is a full-time stained glass artist and owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/ZNStainedGlass\/\">ZN Stained Glass<\/a>. His working studios are located in Spitzer Art Center in Harrisonburg.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31097\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31097\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/12\/artists-use-varied-media-reflect-emu-past-present-future-centennial-installation\/zachary-nafzinger-feature-or-inset\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31097\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31097 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/Zachary-Nafzinger-FEATURE-or-INSET-300x164.jpg\" alt=\"zachary-nafzinger-feature-or-inset\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/Zachary-Nafzinger-FEATURE-or-INSET-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/Zachary-Nafzinger-FEATURE-or-INSET-768x420.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/Zachary-Nafzinger-FEATURE-or-INSET-1024x560.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/Zachary-Nafzinger-FEATURE-or-INSET.jpg 1366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31097\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zachary Nafziger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited to be an artist in the Centennial project, not only for the scale of the project, approximately 70 square feet per artist, but for the caliber of participating artists as well,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m truly honored to be a part of this group, each depicting 100 years of awareness, care and service that this institution has stood for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His project of Tiffany-style stained glass \u201cattempts to depict the light and love of culture and humanity that can be found as the basis for EMU\u2019s core values and ethics \u2026 the hand-cut glass will use color, texture, shape and light to portray the connectivity of the university to the world around us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Melinda Steffy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31098\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31098\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/12\/artists-use-varied-media-reflect-emu-past-present-future-centennial-installation\/art-melinda-steffy\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31098\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31098 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/Art-Melinda-Steffy-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"art-melinda-steffy\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/Art-Melinda-Steffy-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/Art-Melinda-Steffy-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/Art-Melinda-Steffy-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/Art-Melinda-Steffy.jpg 1421w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31098\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Melinda Steffy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Philadelphia artist <a href=\"http:\/\/melindasteffy.com\">Melinda Steffy<\/a> \u201903 re-interprets music as color patterns. Her work explores ideas of translation, converting the time-based format of music into a static visual snapshot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I saw EMU&#8217;s call for artists, I immediately knew I wanted to tackle four-part harmony,\u201d said Steffy, a former Chamber Singer. \u201cI&#8217;m thrilled to have a chance to dig deeper into my own creative ideas, while also celebrating EMU&#8217;s Centennial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her project will translate Hymn 606, known after its number in the Mennonite hymnal and often called the \u201cMennonite anthem,\u201d into a series of 100 ten-inch-square paintings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em>\u00a0The artwork will capture the spirit of Mennonites\u2019 traditional four-part a cappella singing. Collectively, the paintings will represent the entire hymn, displaying the interweaving of the four voice parts; individually, the paintings will stand alone as studies of color and texture. The project metaphorically speaks to a worldview in which distinct voices following different lines of music create a powerful and inspiring whole. This \u201cfour-part worldview\u201d embraces diversity, listens to and draws out marginalized voices, and acknowledges that no single part holds all the answers. <\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31105\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31105\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/12\/artists-use-varied-media-reflect-emu-past-present-future-centennial-installation\/20161113-cyndi-gusler-and-ashley-sauder-miller-open-studio-9\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31105\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31105 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/20161113-Cyndi-Gusler-and-Ashley-Sauder-Miller-open-studio-9-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"20161113-cyndi-gusler-and-ashley-sauder-miller-open-studio-9\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/20161113-Cyndi-Gusler-and-Ashley-Sauder-Miller-open-studio-9-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/20161113-Cyndi-Gusler-and-Ashley-Sauder-Miller-open-studio-9-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/12\/20161113-Cyndi-Gusler-and-Ashley-Sauder-Miller-open-studio-9.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31105\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ashley Sauder Miller<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Ashley Sauder Miller: Project curator<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Miller, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashleysaudermiller.com\">mixed media artist<\/a> who directs the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spitzerartcenter.org\/\">Spitzer Art Center<\/a>, plans to continue thematic development of chair imagery and interiors, referencing chairs on the EMU and EMS campuses as well as those in historic photos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em>Over the past few years, I\u2019ve become conscious of the importance I attached to the chair imagery \u2013 as a treasured heirloom, as a place of expectancy, as a reference of history.
