Service takes center stage in the latest collection of memoir from the Anabaptist Center for Religion and Society<\/a> (ACRS) at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU). Titled \u201cRe-Envisioning Service: The Geography of Our Faith,\u201d the book will be released during EMU\u2019s Homecoming and Family Weekend<\/a> Oct. 14-16.<\/p>\n

It is the third volume in ACRS\u2019 series \u201cThe Geography of Our Faith,\u201d and the first to include both Mennonite and Church of the Brethren authors. The book, running about 400 pages, features 16 stories in five sections, plus a foreword by Mennonite Mission Network executive director Stanley W. Green and an introduction by Nancy Heisey<\/a>, EMU professor of Bible and religion<\/a> and associate dean of Eastern Mennonite Seminary<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cChurch life is a given for the storytellers,\u201d Heisey writes, \u201cand, for the most part, a comfortable and sustaining foundation for their service.\u201d<\/p>\n

Series editor Ray C. Gingerich<\/a>, professor emeritus of theology and ethics and founding director of ACRS, says he is pleased with the way the new volume has come together.<\/p>\n

Volume 2 is “Continuing the Journey:\u00a0The Geography of Our Faith<\/a>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cVolumes 1 and 2 offer a window on Mennonite history and theology from the perspective of EMU\u2019s retired faculty,\u201d Gingerich says. \u201cVolume 3 is perhaps more exciting for a broader readership, not just because it reaches out beyond Mennonites to include Brethren, but it also newly introduces the whole concept of service \u2013 how the very service we do and the occupations we engage in shape us and make us into the people we are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each contributing author shares a portion of his or her personal journey related to aspects of service during the past century. Contributors include J. Kenneth Kreider, Dale V. Ulrich, Emmert F. Bittinger, Carl S. Keener, Margaret Jantzi Foth, Paul M. Schrock, Earle W. Fike Jr., Daniel Hertzler, R. Jan Thompson, H. Dwight Swartzendruber, Bertha Beachy, Kenneth L. Seitz Jr., Paul W. Roth, Pat Hostetter Martin, Earl S. Martin and Edgar Metzler. Two of the authors, Schrock and Thompson, are published posthumously.<\/p>\n

Many of the authors will be present to autograph copies of the book at Homecoming and Family Weekend<\/a>, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, in the Orie O. Miller Hall of Nations area of the University Commons.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look at the series as a way of helping us to remember these people in history, what their contributions were to our community,\u201d Gingerich says. \u201cAnd at the same time, I hope it is giving us models to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gingerich says the series grew as members of ACRS, which describes itself as \u201ca community of elders with an Anabaptist perspective,\u201d began telling each other their stories at the group\u2019s monthly meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe said, \u2018We\u2019ve got to write this stuff up,\u2019 \u201c Gingerich says. \u201cThat gave birth to the first two volumes. It was never intended to become the flagship of ACRS, but it has become our most prominent identity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fourth and final volume in the series, \u201cMaking a Difference in the Journey: The Geography of our Faith,\u201d is scheduled for a fall 2017 release to coincide with EMU\u2019s centennial celebration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
