Stith, who is national coordinator at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/4EdJustice\/\">Alliance for Educational Justice<\/a>, invoked Baker\u2019s metaphor to speak about restorative justice, educational equity, and the \u201cincreasing presence of \u201cblack and brown bodies in American classrooms today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not about the hamburger,\u201d he said, referencing her refrain during the 1960\u2019s diner sit-ins. \u201cIt\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/hutchinscenter.fas.harvard.edu\/sites\/all\/files\/Bigger%20than%20a%20Hamburger%20-%20Ella%20Baker.pdf\">bigger than a hamburger<\/a>. We\u2019re not just interested in restorative justice as an alternative to school suspensions and to challenge the school-to-prison pipeline. (Photo by Joaquin Sosa)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than 55 educators from five states, including Mississippi, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Texas and Florida, attended the June 27-28 conference. The range of demographics represent the growing interest in paying attention to educational equity \u2013 from public, private and charter schools serving elementary through secondary grade levels with diverse student populations in urban, suburban and rural areas.<\/p>\n<h3>RJE benefits manifold<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cOur goals for this experience were to ask two big questions,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/ssa947\">Sarah Armstrong<\/a>, director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/maed\/\">graduate education program<\/a> at EMU and a former superintendent, principal and teacher. \u201cWe wanted to discuss how RJE can assist us in addressing the needs of disenfranchised students and students on the fringe, and the challenges of poor attendance, graduation rates, low achievement and discipline concerns. Secondly, we wanted to share how RJE can benefit students, teachers and the overall school culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/kze2393\">Kathy Evans<\/a>, lead faculty in EMU\u2019s new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/maed\/restorative-justice\/\">MA in Restorative Justice in Education program<\/a> (starting fall 2018), was pleased with the diverse group and the conference\u2019s potential to spread the ethos of restorative justice. [To read more about Kathy Evans and her interview in <em>The Atlantic<\/em> about restorative justice, click <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/01\/restorative-justice-programs-in-schools-need-to-build-slowly-and-address-campus-climate-issues-says-professor-kathy-evans-in-the-atlantic\/\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\">We are working for more socially just and equitable learning environments for all children and we believe that restorative justice has huge potential to help us get there. <strong>\u2014Jonathan Stith<\/strong><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thrilled that we have so many people here from different places and sectors who are interested in learning more about restorative justice is a viable option for restoring healthy learning communities,\u201d she said. \u201cAttending this conference doesn\u2019t make anyone an expert, but we hope it will prompt educators to continue their learning. This is about a long-term shift in the way that we do school.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>EMU deeply rooted in origins of restorative justice<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zehr-institute.org\/what-is-rj\/\">Restorative justice<\/a>, known as RJ for short, presents an alternative philosophy of justice that addresses the needs of multiple stakeholders, draws from indigenous and faith-based approaches, and challenges structural and interpersonal forms of harm. It\u2019s used in a variety of settings, such as prisons and the justice system. RJ in education, which is also called RJE, has been <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2015\/01\/restorative-justice-alum-joseph-luciani-garners-national-attention-by-dramatically-reducing-suspensions-in-la-schools\/\">used successfully<\/a> in school districts to lower suspension rates and to create accountability and community in the schooling environment.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0The principles and practices of RJ are strongly rooted at EMU, which is the academic home of Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/zehr-institute.org\/staff\/howard-zehr\/\">Howard Zehr<\/a>, widely considered the \u201cgrandfather\u201d of restorative justice.<\/p>\n<h3>Learning and Reflecting Time<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The RJE Academy rotated educators through three foundational workshops about RJ principles and practices, such as the circle process, and peacebuilding.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29097\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29097\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/07\/restorative-justice-education-academy-draws-educators-six-states-introduction-creating-socially-just-equitable-learning-environments\/20160628-rje-academy-workshop-michele-king\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-29097\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29097\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/07\/20160628-RJE-Academy-Workshop-Michele-King-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"Michelle King, an educator with Environmental Charter School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, makes a point during discussion. (Photo by Andrew Strack)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In her session on RJ principles, Evans touched on building healthy communities, meeting needs, viewing conflict as a learning opportunity, and providing accountability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf my rosebush isn\u2019t growing, I don\u2019t blame the rosebush,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have to look at the ecological or environmental model\u2026 Students behave in certain ways depending on unmet needs. Can we meet some of those needs using restorative justice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The peacebuilding session focused in part on building relationships, or \u201ctending, mending and befriending,\u201d as Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/mulletjh\">Judy Mullet<\/a> suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Participants also reflected on how their learnings could be applied in their particular setting and heard from educators currently building or creating RJ-oriented models in their particular schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRJE is about a way of approaching life and relationships,\u201d says David Ward, student assistance counselor at Harrisonburg High School.
