{"id":28458,"date":"2016-06-13T10:04:51","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T14:04:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=28458"},"modified":"2016-08-09T13:52:11","modified_gmt":"2016-08-09T17:52:11","slug":"emu-set-to-prepare-engineers-with-a-heart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/emu-set-to-prepare-engineers-with-a-heart\/","title":{"rendered":"EMU set to prepare engineers &#8216;with a heart&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Overseeing construction of a footbridge connecting a rural Latin American village to the wider world,<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"> <\/a>deepening our collective human understanding of bubble science,<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"> <\/a>or helping design a new and improved airplane wing<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"> <\/a>are admirable creative and scientific feats that might appear on an engineer\u2019s CV.<\/p>\n<p>And soon, for the first time ever, CVs like these might include graduation from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/math\/engineering\/\">four-year engineering program<\/a> at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU).<\/p>\n<p>For more than 20 years, EMU has offered a pre-engineering program, allowing students to begin coursework toward an engineering degree but requiring them to transfer to another school after several semesters. In the fall of 2016, however, a full engineering undergraduate major will be offered.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-\u201dcenter\u201d\">\u00a0 \u201cEngineering schools can spit out good technicians, but what we really also need is technicians who have some heart&#8230;&#8221; \u2014Johann Zimmermann, engineer<\/aside>\n<p>Prospective students have, for many years, expressed interest in a full engineering program. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/smeltzed?ssi=math\">Deirdre Smeltzer<\/a>, a professor in the mathematical sciences department before becoming undergraduate dean in 2013, said offering a full major had also long been discussed at the university but hadn\u2019t seemed feasible.<\/p>\n<p>That began to change after professors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/jzt2844?ssi=math\">Esther Tian<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/dak2227?ssi=math\">Daniel King<\/a> \u2013 both with PhDs in mechanical engineering \u2013 joined the mathematical sciences department in 2013. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/easternmennoniteuniversity\/sets\/72157661581375069\">Recent<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/campaign\/\">upcoming<\/a> renovations to the Suter Science Center also allow for enough laboratory and classroom space to host a full-fledged engineering program.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28463\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28463\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/06\/emu-expands-engineering-program-to-offer-bachelors-degree-in-mechanical-or-computer-engineering\/engineering-pictures-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28463\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28463 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/Engineering-Pictures-1-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"Engineering Pictures-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/Engineering-Pictures-1-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/Engineering-Pictures-1.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Daniel King works with a student in the engineering lab.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThat created the opportunity for us to think, \u2018maybe we could really do this,\u2019\u201d said Smeltzer.<\/p>\n<p>Serious planning, including visits to other small universities with engineering programs and the creation of an advisory committee, began about a year ago.<\/p>\n<h3>Seven students already enrolled<\/h3>\n<p>The new program will offer a general engineering degree with options to focus on mechanical or computer engineering. As the major grows, Smeltzer said, future emphases might include environmental and biomedical engineering, building on EMU\u2019s existing undergraduate and graduate programs in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/applied-social-sciences\/environmental-sustainability\/\">environmental science<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/ma-biomed\/\">biomedicine<\/a>. The university will likely hire new faculty members in computer science and computer engineering in the near future to support the new program, Smeltzer added.<\/p>\n<p>While undergraduate degrees in engineering can lead to a wide range of careers, all of them involve problem-solving, design and math. These will be important areas of focus in the new curriculum, said King, whose teaching load will include courses in design, analog circuits, fluid mechanics and mathematical modeling.<\/p>\n<p>Though the program has only recently received final approval, seven incoming first-year students have declared as engineering majors, and several others are interested.<\/p>\n<p>One of those new engineering majors is <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/03\/three-yoder-scholars-bring-hosts-of-talent-to-eastern-mennonite-university\/\">Ben Stutzman<\/a>, from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who plans on a career in architecture. Stutzman had been considering several other schools when he heard that EMU was about to launch its new engineering program, and after some thought, decided to enroll.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure yet what kinds of buildings I want to design, but whatever I do, I would definitely want to focus on green, environmentally-friendly designs,\u201d said Stutzman, who hopes that an engineering background will eventually inform the technical aspects of his architecture.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29140\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29140\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/06\/emu-expands-engineering-program-to-offer-bachelors-degree-in-mechanical-or-computer-engineering\/engineering-pictures-3-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-29140\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29140 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/Engineering-Pictures-3-1-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"Engineering Pictures-3\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/Engineering-Pictures-3-1-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/Engineering-Pictures-3-1.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students work on a project in an engineering class.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m [also] looking forward to having more one-to-one attention from the professors, since the class size will be small and the faculty all seem dedicated and invested in the program,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h3>Small class sizes a benefit<\/h3>\n<p>Advisory committee member Eric Moyer, class of \u201903, said small class sizes and close interaction with professors will be important benefits of EMU\u2019s small engineering program, which won\u2019t have access to the same resources and facilities as large schools. Moyer spent three semesters in EMU\u2019s pre-engineering program before transferring to Drexel University in Philadelphia, where he and his hundreds of classmates sometimes had to put their student ID numbers rather than their names on all their assignments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI decided to go to EMU because I really wasn\u2019t into the mega-school atmosphere,\u201d said Moyer, now a project engineer working on a new composite airplane wing for Boeing in Everett, Washington. \u201cHere we bring in lots of folks from the big state schools. The facilities are great selling points, but I think the thing that\u2019s going to benefit anyone going to EMU over the other schools are smaller class sizes \u2026 and being involved in a community that\u2019s there for your success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EMU\u2019s broader focus on cross-cultural learning and pursuit of the common good will also help distinguish the new program, which has been designed to accommodate a semester-long cross-cultural program that many students participate in.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28465\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28465\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/06\/emu-expands-engineering-program-to-offer-bachelors-degree-in-mechanical-or-computer-engineering\/engineering-space\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28465\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28465 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/engineering-space-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"engineering space\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/engineering-space-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/engineering-space-768x489.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/engineering-space-1024x652.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/06\/engineering-space.jpg 1198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28465\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A rendering of new space devoted to engineering in Suter West.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEngineering schools can spit out good technicians, but what we really also need is technicians who have some heart, and that can apply [their skills] to things that are good for society,\u201d said advisory committee member Johann Zimmermann, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johannzimmermann.com\/\">civil and structural engineer<\/a> based in Harrisonburg, Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018common good\u2019 framework we apply to all our academic programs will also be an important part of our approach to engineering,\u201d said Smeltzer. \u201cTraining engineers who help meet the world\u2019s needs will fit EMU\u2019s mission of preparing students to serve and lead in a global context.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Zimmermann and Moyer, the advisory committee that helped EMU plan the new program over the past year included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/byer\">Owen Byer<\/a> (chair) \u2013 professor of mathematics<\/li>\n<li>Sara Atwood \u2013 assistant professor of engineering\u00a0and physics at Elizabethtown College<\/li>\n<li>Ashley Driver \u2013 director of operations, Howell Metal, New Market, Virginia<\/li>\n<li>John Swartzendruber &#8217;79 \u00ad\u2013 Former computer\u00a0engineer, Eli Lilly, Indianapolis, Indiana<\/li>\n<li>John-David Yoder \u00ad\u2013 chair and professor of mechanical engineering\u00a0at Ohio Northern University<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The engineering program will begin using classroom and laboratory space in the recently renovated east half of the Suter Science Center. Upcoming renovations to the west half of the building will provide more space for the new program, including a laboratory with specialized equipment like 3-D printers.
