(Photo by Andrea Cable)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Herman won for his presentation of research on the effect of a high salt and high fructose diet on rats (his research was titled \u201cThe Effect of a High Salt and High Fructose Diet on the Expression of the NFAT5 Gene in Kidney and Intestine Samples of Sprague-Dawley Rats\u201d). Herman works with Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/jzh3998\">Julia Halterman<\/a> in support of her <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2015\/02\/jeffress-trust-grant-of-100000-kickstarts-hypertension-research-with-new-equipment-and-student-assistants\/\">Jeffress Grant-funded project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Forty projects were presented. Some individuals worked specifically under <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/biology\/research\/\">professors in independent study projects<\/a>. Others participated as part of required coursework. Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/ms826?ssi=chemistry\">Matthew Siderhurst<\/a>\u2019s alternative energy class, for example, presented a range of research on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>The poster show, which is held in both spring and <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2015\/12\/student-research-on-hypertension-caffeinated-athletes-and-radio-tracked-beetles-rewarded-at-annual-stem-symposium\/\">fall<\/a>, provides undergraduates and graduate students with the opportunity to practice presentation skills in an informal setting. Several students have presented research in the campus setting before moving on to <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/04\/undergraduate-presents-computer-science-research-at-prestigious-sigsce-conference\/\">more prestigious venues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Professors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/gh497\">Greta Ann Herin<\/a> (biology, biomedicine) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/dak2227\">Danny King<\/a> (physics, engineering) headed the judging panel, which also included Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/azb4546\">Abigail Berkey<\/a> (biology), Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/showalda\">Daniel Showalter<\/a> (mathematics) and Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jmu.edu\/biology\/people\/all-people\/faculty\/faculty-cleland.shtml\">Corey Cleland<\/a>, a biology professor at James Madison University.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27903\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27903\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/04\/spring-stem-celebration-showcases-forty-individual-and-group-research-projects\/20160421-stem-celebration-002\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27903\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27903 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/04\/20160421-STEM-Celebration-002-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"20160421-STEM Celebration-002\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/04\/20160421-STEM-Celebration-002-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/04\/20160421-STEM-Celebration-002.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ben Zook and Andrew Troyer present research from their engineering mechanics class to Professor Dee Weikle. (Photo by Andrea Cable)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the upperclass division, Kaylee Ferguson and Jared Fernandez, who also studied changes in gene expression related to dietary changes in rats with Halterman, finished in second place. Ferguson is a junior biology major and Fernandez a second-year MA in Biomedicine graduate student.<\/p>\n<p>Third \u200bplace went to Katherine Lehman for her research on Judas beetles. She is a research student with Siderhurst.<\/p>\n<p>In the underclass division, Mason Stoltzfus and Maria Yoder won second place for their general chemistry project on the abilities of English ivy and forsythia to phytoremediate copper.<\/p>\n<p>Phoebe Coffie and Maisie Kirkley won third place for their project on the variation of copper concentrations in contaminated soils between sunflowers and beans.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these projects were for a general chemistry II class taught by Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/cessnas\">Stephen Cessna<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Quiz show elite win \u2018The Romie\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27909\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27909\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/04\/spring-stem-celebration-showcases-forty-individual-and-group-research-projects\/ajar-romie-feature\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27909\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27909 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/04\/AJAR-Romie-feature-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"AJAR Romie feature\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/04\/AJAR-Romie-feature-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/04\/AJAR-Romie-feature.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27909\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Romie was awarded to Aubrey Shelly, Ayu Yifru, Robert Propst and Jonathan Patterson. (Photos courtesy of Daniel King and Esther Tian)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The quiz show team of \u201cMind AJAR\u201d were the first recipients of \u201cThe Romie,\u201d a bobblehead trophy celebrating Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/millerrj\">Roman Miller<\/a>, for which the annual games are named. Miller retires this spring after 31 years at EMU (read about his long and dedicated career <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/04\/a-mentor-to-future-doctors-and-health-professionals-biology-professor-roman-miller-retires-after-31-years-at-emu\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Mind AJAR consisted of Robert Propst, Aubrey Shelly, Ayu Yifru and Jonathan Patterson.
