To acknowledge their service and deep commitment to our community, we\u2019ve offered the opportunity for them to share favorite memories of their time here, as well as advice for those of us still laboring onwards. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Please stay tuned as we feature retiring faculty (at least those were agreeable to our idea) in the coming weeks. A complete list of 2016 retirees concludes each article. The comment box is open below for those of you who wish to share greetings and memories with Jack. He can also be reached at <\/em><a href=\"mailto:Jack%20Rutt%20%3Cruttj@emu.edu%3E\">ruttj@emu.edu<\/a> <em>or (540) 432-4478.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">***<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/ruttj\">Jack Rutt<\/a> calls this next transition period \u201cmoving to retirement.\u201d He\u2019s not quite there yet and may never be \u201cfully retired.\u201d In his current role of special projects support, Jack has provided oversight to some of the major facilities improvements on campus, including the completed<a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2014\/10\/2-2-million-renovation-of-roselawn-now-complete-offering-pleasant-office-class-and-interaction-spaces\/\"> Roselawn renovation<\/a> and the ongoing Suter Science Center project [view completed Phase I renovations <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/suter-renovation\/\">here<\/a> and check out Suter West plans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/campaign\/\">here<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>He anticipates continuing to provide project management services \u201cfor some (yet to be determined) period of time on a very part-time, highly flexible schedule,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>A 1972 graduate of EMU with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/psychology\/\">psychology<\/a> degree, Jack was hired as director of information systems in December 1999 and remained in that position until his first \u201cretirement\u201d in May 2014. In all, he\u2019s worked more than 16 years at EMU. (Before coming to EMU, he worked more than 20 years in various technology management roles in both small and large companies.)<\/p>\n<p>Jack shared two highlights of being a part of EMU:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Seeing students who have just graduated from high school arrive on campus with much to learn, and then seeing those same students,\u00a0four years later, involved confidently in campus activities where they have \u201ccome into their own\u201d confirmed for me, over and over, that many good things happen at EMU that are transformative for the rest of these students\u2019 lives. <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I made it a priority to attend the chapel gatherings dedicated to returning cross-cultural groups. Many of these travelers shared the profound life-changing impact this experience had, yet another example of the transformation that happens to students during their studies here at EMU.<\/em>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_27761\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27761\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2016\/04\/celebrating-service-special-projects-manager-jack-rutt-keeps-his-finger-on-emus-pulse-but-with-a-bit-more-time-off\/suter-610x370\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27761\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27761\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/04\/Suter-610x370-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"With the successful conclusion of the $7.3-million \u201cSuter East\u201d campaign, attention now turns to &quot;Suter West,&quot; with renovations planned to include state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities for a new engineering program, an update to the iconic SC 106 lecture hall, and new natural history museum. \" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/04\/Suter-610x370-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2016\/04\/Suter-610x370.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27761\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jack Rutt continues his project management as Suter Science Center renovations move from the $7.3-million \u201cSuter East\u201d campaign to &#8220;Suter West,&#8221; with renovations to include state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities for a new engineering program, an update to the iconic SC 106 lecture hall, and new natural history museum.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>His third highlight is a professional achievement, the installation of a software system that has affected university operations on a daily basis since its implementation in 2009.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The largest IS project during my time as director was the EX conversion, which took 18 months to complete and cost nearly $1 million. The software modules that provide systems functionality for the office of admissions, registration, business affairs, advancement, physical plant, institutional research, student advising and financial aid were converted from a legacy system on a dying computer platform to a modern system running on a Microsoft Windows platform. This change impacted every department and involved thousands of hours of training for many EMU employees.\u00a0 <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jack has high praise for his colleagues at EMU, \u201cboth those above me in the organization (my supervisors) and those I worked with directly (employees who looked to me for leadership).\u201d One of his guiding principles in the workplace that he shared with us speaks to collaboration:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Collaboration trumps individual achievement.\u00a0It has been my experience that the best solutions to problems are most often developed<\/em> <em>through a group process which is best served by leadership that ensures a shared understanding of the problem to be solved along with a shared expectation and understanding of what will be delivered.\u00a0When in doubt, draw a picture to ensure that everyone is visualizing the same concepts.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In between projects, he and his wife Gloria Short Rutt \u201972 will spend time with children and grandchildren. Son Eric Rutt \u201901 and his wife, Mahlet Aklu \u201801, are in Boston, while daughter Megan Rutt Rosenwink \u201902 is in Heidelberg, Germany.
