The four groups meet on different nights of the week, depending on the schedules of the student leaders. And activities vary: On Tuesday nights in Cedarwood, the gatherings alternate between a study of 1 Peter and a prayer time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26052\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26052\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/11\/IMG_9886_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26052 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/11\/IMG_9886_web-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"Maplewood worship\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/11\/IMG_9886_web-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/11\/IMG_9886_web.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26052\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maplewood&#8217;s Worship Nights are Thursdays at 7:17 p.m., a &#8220;strange time,&#8221; according to pastoral assistant Amanda Helfrich, &#8220;but hopefully people remember.&#8221; From left: Bekah Mongold, Madalynn Payne, Amanda Helfrich and ministry assistant Da&#8217;Jahnea Robinson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While Worship Nights have been a part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/studentlife\/campus-ministries\/\">campus ministries<\/a> for several years, undergraduate campus pastor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/lrm488\">Lana Miller<\/a> has made significant changes to the program\u2019s focus and foundation. In previous years, residents in the halls alternated the planning of events for the others.<\/p>\n<p>Worship Nights are now \u201cfocusing on creating and entering into relationship and intentional conversation,\u201d according to Miller. The goal for student leaders is to respond to the group who comes.<\/p>\n<h3>Ministry assistants and pastoral assistants<\/h3>\n<p>Now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/studentlife\/campus-ministries\/ma-pa\/\">specially trained students<\/a> within each residence hall, called Ministry Assistants (MAs), plan programs for and with their fellow residents, Miller says. They are also enrolled in a ministry exploration class led by Miller, which asks \u201chow are you listening to God, to each other, and to yourself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s MAs are<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Elmwood:<\/strong> Sarah Boshart, Sarah Jennings, Luis Longo;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maplewood:<\/strong> Heyrin (Lynn) Cha, Da\u2019Jahnea Robinson;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cedarwood:<\/strong> Megan Bishop, Perry Blosser, Seungkyoo (Peter) Han, Jessica Longenecker, Taylor Mirarchi;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Northlawn:<\/strong> Jasmine Miller, Alexa Weeks, Megan Weaver, Oksana Kittrell, Anel Molina.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These students are mentored in their responsibilities by Pastoral Assistants, who are paid for their time. To his left is ministry assistant Heyrin (Lynn) Cha.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Elmwood:<\/strong> Courtney Unruh and Jonathan Augsberger;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maplewood:<\/strong> Nathanael Ressler and Amanda Helfrich;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cedarwood:<\/strong> Rebekah York and Wes Wilder;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Northlawn:<\/strong> Jolee Paden.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Miller sees this new focus as forming leaders \u201cwho then help others.\u201d\u00a0 The team approach \u201cstrengthens the core so that leaders are well- equipped to reach out with genuine care rather than an agenda,\u201d according to Miller.<\/p>\n<p>It also keeps student leaders from becoming discouraged if an event isn\u2019t well attended. In the past, student leaders sometimes became \u201cdefeated and depleted if they worked hard planning something and then few people came,\u201d Miller said. The new emphasis on relational leadership and intentional conversation \u201ctakes off the pressure to perform.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>New approach brings students together<\/h3>\n<p>Pastoral assistant Rebekah York, a senior <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/applied-social-sciences\/peacebuilding\/\">peacebuilding and development<\/a> major, also sees the benefits of the new approach: York, who shares PA duties with Wes Wilder in Cedarwood residence hall, says she\u2019s noticed many changes over the past two years, and is energized by the new structure. \u201cMy crazy ideas are supported and I have people behind me, encouraging me to keep going. That makes the world of difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of York\u2019s \u201ccrazy\u201d ideas was to have a Bible study studying the connection between the gospel and justice (the events are called Jesus + Justice = \u201cJestice\u201d) with students and faculty. Though it\u2019s not going \u201cexactly as planned,\u201d York is confident because of the encouragement she receives from Miller, and because she is \u201cgiven a space and time to see if [her ideas] could work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>York also appreciates the relationships she\u2019s developed with first-year and sophomore students. \u201cWe are much more involved in the spiritual lives of the underclassmen and I\u2019ve been able to connect with people I would not normally have had any contact with,\u201d she said. I think it is really important for the upperclassmen to be involved with the underclassmen.
