Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/cwb784\">Catherine Barnes<\/a> offers a keynote address and more than 20 Eastern Mennonite University other faculty and alumni are also slated to present or speak on panels.<\/p>\n<p>The conference is hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peacejusticestudies.org\/about\">Peace and Justice Studies Association<\/a> (PJSA), dedicated to bringing together academics, K-12 teachers, and grassroots activists to explore alternatives to violence and share visions and strategies for peacebuilding, social justice and social\u00a0change.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;PJSA is an important bi-national alliance for peacebuilding research, scholarship, training and activism,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/jb459\">J. Daryl Byler<\/a>, executive director of EMU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a>. \u201cIt is a great honor that so many CJP and EMU faculty, staff and graduates will be featured in prominent conference roles this year, and allows a rare opportunity to highlight our distinctive contributions to the peacebuilding field.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Those \u201cdistinctive contributions\u201d include both conceptual and practical dimensions to the fields of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/restorative-justice\/\">restorative justice<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/maed\/restorative-justice\/\">restorative justice in education<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/star\/\">trauma awareness<\/a>, peace and justice studies pedagogy and the pedagogy of practice within the field, experiential education, reflective pedagogy and the arts and peacebuilding.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Catherine Barnes offers keynote address<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Dr. Catherine Barnes, affiliate professor at CJP, will share from more than 30 years of experience working with deliberative dialogue processes in places as varied as the UN General Assembly Hall to village gathering places. Her address is titled \u201cEngaging together: exploring deliberative dialogue as a path towards systemic transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeliberative dialogue\u201d is a process that can empower participants to foster collaborative relationships and perceive the underlying mental models that maintain the status quo with the goal of fostering new approaches to complex challenges.<\/p>\n<p>For the past seven years, Barnes has been working in support of transitional processes in Burma\/Myanmar. She has worked and lived in more than 30 countries as a teacher, trainer, researcher, policy advocate and consultant with the focus of helping civil society activists, diplomats and politicians, and armed groups to build their capacities for preventing violence and using conflict as an opportunity for addressing the underlying causes giving rise to grievance. Barnes has worked with numerous peacebuilding and human rights organizations, including Conciliation Resources and Minority Rights Group International.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Focusing on education<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25576\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25576\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/10\/Gloria.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25576 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/10\/Gloria-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Gloria\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/10\/Gloria-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/10\/Gloria.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25576\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Gloria Rhodes interacts with graduate students at the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding. (Photo by Michael Sheeler)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>EMU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/president\/mission\/\">missional emphasis<\/a> on peace and justice guides its educators, many of whom are sharing their pedagogical practices and discussing ways to educate future peacebuilders in the \u201ceducator\u2019s strand,\u201d designed for personal and professional development of K-12 teachers, undergraduate and community educators. Themes include pedagogy, curriculum development, building a culture of peace in your classroom or school, alternative education programs, and restorative\u00a0practices.<\/p>\n<p>On the undergraduate level, professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/rhodesg\">Gloria Rhodes<\/a>, who leads the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/applied-social-sciences\/peacebuilding\/\">peace and development major<\/a> in the department of applied social sciences, leads a roundtable discussion for faculty and administrators of peace and justice studies programs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/ack972\">Amy Knorr<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/grad\/practicum\/\">peacebuilding practice coordinator<\/a> with CJP\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/grad\/\">graduate program<\/a>, joins professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/db252\">Dave Brubaker<\/a> and graduate students in a session on mentoring student peacebuilders and the importance of those mentors being experienced practitioners themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Restorative practices are highlighted by professors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/lal494\">Lori Leaman<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/mulletjh\">Judy Mullet<\/a> in a \u201crelational justice\u201d workshop on how mindful teachers can prepare and prime \u201ctheir best selves\u201d in preparation for inviting students into models of restorative justice. Mullet also joins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgewater.edu\/about-bc\/faculty-students\/dr-jean-r-hawk\">Jean Hawk<\/a>, professor of education at Bridgewater College, for a workshop on relational literacy in multicultural K-12 classrooms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/ch436?ssi...\">Cheree Hammond<\/a>, professor of counseling, leads educators in a workshop on contemplative pedagogies and the cultivation of a just and peaceful self.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Restorative justice, trauma healing, playback theater featured<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25577\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25577\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/10\/IMG_9924_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25577 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/10\/IMG_9924_web-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"lieutenant kurt\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/10\/IMG_9924_web-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/10\/IMG_9924_web.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lieutenant Kurt Boshart, of the Harrisonburg Police Department, will participate in a panel about the community&#8217;s restorative justice movement. The <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/...\/harrisonburg-police-and-community-members-join-hands-in- offering-restorative-justice-option\/\">new community<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/...\/harrisonburg-police-and-community-members-join-hands-in- offering-restorative-justice-option\/\"> restorative justice program in Harrisonburg<\/a> brings together practitioners from EMU and JMU, as well as local law enforcement. Collaborators in the initiative will speak: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/cds494\">Carl Stauffer<\/a>, co-director of the<a href=\"http:\/\/zehr-institute.org\/\"> Zehr Institute for Restorative Justice<\/a>; education professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/kze2393\">Kathy Evans<\/a>; Harrisonburg Police Department lieutenant Kurt Boshart; <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/cjp-alumni\/sue-praill\/\">Sue Praill<\/a>, restorative justice coordinator at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairfieldcenter.org\">Fairfield Center<\/a>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/cjp-alumni\/josh-bacon\/\">Josh Bacon<\/a>, director of JMU\u2019s Office of Student Accountability and Restorative Practices.<\/p>\n<p>Another definitive CJP program, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/star\/\">STAR<\/a> (Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience), will be introduced in a workshop by professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/bargee\">Elaine Zook Barge<\/a> and program director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/kmm2222\">Kathryn Mansfield<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/theater\/inside-out\/\">Inside Out playback theater<\/a> troupe co-founders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/hw456\">Heidi Winters Vogel<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/cjp-alumni\/roger-w-foster\/\">Roger Foster<\/a> lead a workshop on playback theater as qualitative research. Vogel is a professor of theater; Foster instructs in the applied social sciences department and with CJP. The applied theater method invites dialogue and healing through community-building, as audience members share stories and watch as they are \u201cplayed back\u201d on the stage. Among other settings, Inside Out has performed on campus with college students returning from cross-culturals, among international peacebuilders and in workshops for and research about trauma and sexual abuse survivors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/cjs989\">Carolyn Stauffer<\/a>, professor of applied social sciences, speaks about social capital networks as forms of resistance among battered undocumented Latinas, sharing just one strand of a <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/...\/research-on-domestic-abuse-among-latina-homeless-and- conservative-mennonite-women-earns-justpax-grant\/\">interdisciplinary three-year research project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/jrm2249\">Johonna Turner<\/a>, assistant professor of restorative justice and peacebuilding, leads a discussion on the film \u201cVision is Our Power,\u201d a film about black youth ending violence in all its forms. The documentary was created by four young filmmakers participating in a multi-year arts and leadership Vision to Peace Project led by Turner; the film debuted in 2008 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And more\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/apw677\">Andrew White<\/a>, professor of English, presents on life narratives and identity issues in the Balkans with his wife Daria, a CJP graduate who teaches in the counseling department at JMU. The two lived and taught in the Balkans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/cee798\">Christian Early<\/a>, professor of philosophy and theology, explores the recent work in philosophy and science on theory of emotion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/Restorative justice, peacebuilding and development programs gain ... Johonna Turner and Tim Seidel will share expertise in peacebuilding and development across undergraduate and graduate programs, ... emu.edu\/...\/restorative-justice-peacebuilding-and-development-programs- gain-new-faculty\/\">Tim Seidel<\/a>, a new faculty member coming to EMU next semester after concluding his PhD research at American University, participates several panels, with a diversity of topics including transnational solidarity and police brutality and racism in the contested areas of Palestine and Ferguson, Missouri. Seidel is a board member of PJSA.<\/p>\n<p>Among the alumni presenting: Vesna Hart, Sue Praill and Tom Brenneman join a panel discussion on justice and the nature of human nature.
