Among the seven is the former dean of Harvard Medical School.<\/p>\n<p>The biomedicine program prepares students for careers in medicine, hospital administration, teaching and other fields. Many of the current students did not pursue majors in college that would lead to healthcare careers but decided later that\u2019s what they wanted. Fewer than half of the students came directly from undergraduate studies.<\/p>\n<p>This graduate program offers three tracks \u2013 biomedical science, biomedical teaching and biomedical leadership.<\/p>\n<p>The consulting team, led by longtime Richmond physician Joseph Longacher, will provide EMU\u2019s biomedical professors and students with &#8220;real-world experience, insights and advice,&#8221; says Roman Miller, PhD, director of the MA in biomedicine program. If all goes as expected, the team members will serve as resources for, and connectors to, the larger clinical and medical-academic worlds, leading to interesting research projects and clinical practicums. The team held its first meeting in December 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The seven team members are (in alphabetical order by last name):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/Eshleman_Robert_web_Kolb-e1424116550633.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-23289 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/Eshleman_Robert_web_Kolb-e1424116550633.jpg\" alt=\"J. Robert Eshleman\" width=\"75\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 J. Robert Eshleman: He has been a professor for some 50 years at the school where he earned his degree as a dentist \u2212 the School of Dentistry of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia. For nine of those years he chaired the restorative dentistry department. A member of the class of 1956, he received the school\u2019s \u201coutstanding service award\u201d in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022<a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/Longenecker_Joseph_web_Kolb-e1424116674388.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23293\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/Longenecker_Joseph_web_Kolb-e1424116674388.jpg\" alt=\"Longenecker Joseph web\" width=\"75\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a> Joseph Longacher: <span style=\"color: #000000;\">For most of his career he was\u00a0a practicing gastroenterologist\u00a0in Richmond who also taught the subject at the McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center. <\/span>Beyond his medical work, he frequently served in roles supportive of his community and church. He is a 1959 graduate of EMU. In addition to chairing EMU\u2019s biomedicine consulting team, he is the program&#8217;s scholar-in-residence on a volunteer basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/Randall-Longenecker-e1424118888413.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23305\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/Randall-Longenecker-e1424118888413.jpg\" alt=\"Randall Longenecker\" width=\"75\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>Randall Longenecker: <span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,clean,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.5em;\">A longtime family physician <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,clean,sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.5em;\">and program director for a rural residency\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,clean,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">program<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,clean,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.5em; color: #000000;\">\u00a0in Bellefontaine, Ohio, he is now assistant dean of rural and underserved programs at Ohio University\u2019s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; color: #000000;\">and<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0executive director for The RTT Collaborative, a nationwide nonprofit network of rural medical education<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">programs<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span> A 1975 EMU graduate, he earned his MD from the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/joseph-martin-big-e1424118933725.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23301\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/joseph-martin-big-e1424118933725.jpg\" alt=\"joseph-martin-big\" width=\"85\" height=\"87\" \/><\/a>Joseph B. Martin: former dean of the School of Medicine at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and professor of neurobiology. Earlier he was dean of the medical school at the University of California at San Francisco, followed by a term as chancellor of the entire university. He completed his bachelor&#8217;s degree at EMU, where he met his wife, and then returned to his native province to earn an MD from the University of Alberta. He also holds a PhD in anatomy from the University of Rochester.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/Moyer_Philip_web_Kolb-e1424116726118.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23290\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/Moyer_Philip_web_Kolb-e1424116726118.jpg\" alt=\"Moyer Philip web \" width=\"75\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>J. Phillip Moyer: He was a cardiologist for many years in Sellersville, Pennsylvania, affiliated with Grand View Hospital. A graduate of Goshen College, EMU\u2019s sister Mennonite school in Indiana, he earned his MD from the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Following retirement, he has worked as a volunteer physician in India and a high school biology teacher in Albania.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/Wenger_John_web_Kolb-e1424116883982.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23291\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/Wenger_John_web_Kolb-e1424116883982.jpg\" alt=\"Wenger John web \" width=\"75\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>John D. Wenger: He is a family physician at the Integrative Medicine Center of Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg. A 1985 graduate of EMU, he got his DO from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Later he studied integrative medicine at the University of Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/Yoder_Boshart_Teresa_web_Kolb-e1424116907695.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23288\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2015\/02\/Yoder_Boshart_Teresa_web_Kolb-e1424116907695.jpg\" alt=\"Yoder Boshart Teresa web \" width=\"75\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>Teresa Boshart Yoder: As director of women\u2019s services at Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg, she spearheads the services at the new Funkhouser Women\u2019s Center. Opened in 2013, the center offers treatment for breast cancer and other diseases as well as educational seminars and support groups.
