Winter\u00a02015 held some uncertain moments for the Eastern Mennonite men’s and women’s basketball teams, but both squads are expected\u00a0to be a force in the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament, which begins February 27 in Salem, Virginia at the Salem Civic Center.<\/p>\n

Lady Royals Powerhouse Record Includes\u00a0Home Winning Streak of 30\u00a0Games<\/h2>\n

The EMU women’s basketball team closed regular season play\u00a0out in February 2015 by solidifying\u00a0their\u00a0first place ranking in the ODAC.\u00a0The team’s overall record is 21-3 (15-1 conference) as of February 26, 2015.<\/p>\n

That powerhouse record includes a home winning streak of 30\u00a0games: their last loss in Yoder Arena occurred over two seasons\u00a0ago in January 2013.<\/p>\n

In early January, the Lady Royals’ versatile forward\u00a0Jess Rheinheimer<\/a>\u00a0earned her second spot on the D3hoops.com<\/a> Team of the Week and was named the National Player of the Week<\/a> by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). This is the first season that the USBWA is recognizing national players of the week from Division III.<\/p>\n

In February Rheinhemer was named one of five in nation to the\u00a0<\/a>Capital One Academic All-America First Team<\/a>. A member of the EMU\u00a0<\/span>honors program<\/a>, Rheinheimer holds a 3.96 GPA in the university\u2019s well-respected\u00a0<\/span>nursing program<\/a>, along with a minor in\u00a0<\/span>history<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Men’s Team Seeded\u00a0No. 4\u00a0in Tourney<\/h2>\n

The Runnin Royals have gathered a number of career records and personal honors\u00a0even after battling through\u00a0a\u00a0tough non-conference\u00a0and ODAC schedule.<\/p>\n

The team has a record of 16-9\u00a0overall (9-7 conference) as of February 26, 2015.<\/p>\n

The men\u00a0clinched the No. 4 seed with an 88-71 victory over Roanoke College<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some of the honors accrued this season were for senior\u00a0David Falk<\/a>, who\u00a0was named\u00a0ODAC Player of the Week after collecting double doubles during dramatic wins\u00a0in mid-January. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As of Feb. 22 the 6-6 center is ranked third in the nation for rebounds per game.\u00a0Falk\u00a0is 14th\u00a0in the nation in\u00a0free throw attempts<\/a>, having logged 192\u00a0throughout the regular season.\u00a0He\u00a0is currently ranked 12th in the nation in blocks<\/a>. Marcel Crump, an All-ODAC senior<\/a>, was named Royal Athlete of the Week on January 22 after he went multiple games hitting\u00a0100 percent of his attempts\u00a0from the free throw line.<\/p>\n

Runnin Royals\u2019 starting point guard\u00a0<\/span>James Williams<\/a>\u00a0earned the\u00a0Royal Athlete of the Week honor when he logged career bests of 18 points and nine assists.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI like setting my teammates up to score,\u201d said Williams, a senior from Capitol Heights, Md. \u00a0\u201cWhen I give an assist I feel like I scored the bucket myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
