First with Lee Eshleman \u201986 in Ted &amp; Lee, and now with <a href=\"www.tedandcompany.com\">Ted &amp; Company<\/a>, he has written and produced more than a dozen plays, travelling extensively worldwide for performances.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s why, when three similarly focused suggestions came to his drawing board, he took notice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout two years ago,\u201d Swartz remembers, \u201cI was asked to consider writing something about same-sex issues and sexuality in the context of the church, and I was busy at the time. But then six months later, on two other occasions, people asked the same question, and I took it a bit more seriously.\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/10\/listening-for-grace-logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-22390\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/10\/listening-for-grace-logo-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"listening-for-grace logo\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/10\/listening-for-grace-logo-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/10\/listening-for-grace-logo.jpg 622w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This dialogue resulted in \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.listeningforgrace.com\">Listening For Grace<\/a>,\u201d a play that invites the audience to listen just as Swartz did to the diverse voices speaking about the controversial, challenging topic of same-sex relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Eastern Mennonite University will host a performance of the show, which is free and open to the public, Sunday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Lehman Auditorium. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis, with doors opening at 6:45 p.m. A talkback\u00a0session will follow.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Characters share variety of perspectives<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The main character of \u201cListening For Grace\u201d is Daryl, a widower who learns that his son is gay. During the 70-minute performance, Daryl shares the stories of five other characters, each of whom provide a different perspective on same-sex relationships and faith. One of those voices is that of his deceased wife, Grace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe audience is continuously listening throughout this play, for Grace as a character who speaks truth to the main character in a way he can\u2019t hear otherwise,\u201d Swartz says. \u201cThey are listening for Grace, but they are also listening to hear themselves in someone else\u2019s story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In shaping the play as an extended dialogue, Swartz invites the audience to honor their own viewpoints and those of others, and then to re-engage in continued discussion with respect and empathy.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Campus community invited to conversation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Recent performances at Mennonite churches and other locations around the country have often sparked the scheduling of conversation circles and small-group discussion, \u201csometimes even a few days later to allow people to process it, depending on how the community or congregation wants to handle it,\u201d Swartz says.<\/p>\n<p>EMU is following this model, hosting a follow-up conversation for campus community members at the Discipleship Center on Monday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Pastor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/bb329\">Brian Martin Burkholder<\/a>, director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/\/studentlife\/campus-ministries\/\">campus ministries<\/a>, says the play offers an opportunity for continued dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expect that most people will find their voice, or voices, represented by one or more of the characters in this play such that continued reflection and conversation with others might be prompted,\u201d Burkholder said. \u201cIdeally, this performance will offer a shared experience that encourages ongoing dialogue.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Play, cast, have connections to campus<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cListening For Grace\u201d has been performed at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.valleyarts.org\/court-square-theater\/\">Court Square Theater<\/a> in Harrisonburg to a packed house of Swartz\u2019s hometown fans.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Swartz says he is delighted to be returning to EMU and to Lehman Auditorium, the stage \u201cwhere I learned to act\u201d while studying theology at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/seminary\/\">Eastern Mennonite Seminary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s fitting that the play returns to campus, where Swartz debuted an early script at a closed reading in the fall of 2013.
