{"id":22173,"date":"2014-09-18T16:21:53","date_gmt":"2014-09-18T20:21:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=22173"},"modified":"2014-10-03T17:53:05","modified_gmt":"2014-10-03T21:53:05","slug":"latino-student-alliance-begins-annual-festivities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2014\/latino-student-alliance-begins-annual-festivities\/","title":{"rendered":"Latino Student Alliance Begins Annual Festivities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #111111\"><em>This article was published in the EMU WeatherVane, a student newspaper.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">The Latino Student Alliance marked the start of their annual Latino Heritage Month on Monday, Sept. 15.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">The ideal guiding this year\u2019s heritage month is \u201cMarcando Nuestra Huella,\u201d or \u201cLeaving Our Footprint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">Sophomore Fernanda Hernandez and Junior Paola Diaz, who have been with LSA for two years, explain that the alliance attempts to have a new theme every year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">\u201cSo last year,\u201d Hernandez says, \u201c\u2026was, \u2018One Land, Many Nations.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">Diaz adds that the group wanted \u201cto hit the point of diversity and appreciating our differences and difference of cultures, and not just focus on Latinos, but also try to include everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">Moving forward, LSA aims to strengthen the goal of Latino Heritage Month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">Hernandez said, \u201cThis year, \u2018Leaving our Footprint\u2019 is more of our impact, and the challenges that we face, or any minority faces.\u201d<br \/>\nOne such way LSA hopes to make an impact is by hosting a forum chapel tomorrow in Lehman auditorium.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">Senior Ana Cruz, who is also in her second year with LSA, explains, \u201cWe have an opening chapel; that\u2019s pretty much the thing that\u2019s always been there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">While chapel has been integral to Latino Heritage Month in the past, serving as either an opening or an ending to a celebration of heritage and culture, she adds that this week\u2019s chapel will be different from previous years. The chapel forum will explore LSA\u2019s theme and focus on reflections from current graduate student Boris Ozuna.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">Cruz explains, \u201cWe\u2019ve always had in mind to kind of do something different for chapel. Something Latino-ish, not something that\u2019s just standard.\u201d This notion is evident in the rest of LSA\u2019s planning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">On Oct. 3, the annual formal banquet will be held at 6 p.m. While the location has yet to be determined, LSA notes that this event has quickly grown in popularity since its introduction last year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">Diaz said, \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to the banquet; that\u2019s kind of one of the big things people have started to look forward to. We started it last year. It was just a way for everybody to get dressed up and come out and support a cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">As a result of this success, as well as students\u2019 requests for a salsa night, LSA will host a small dance following the banquet. Hernandez notes that this will provide students with a chance to continue to socialize and celebrate Latino culture once the banquet is over.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">Following this event, Latino Heritage Month is currently slated to culminate in a showing of \u201cInstructions Not Included,\u201d which follows the struggles a man and his daughter face when the girl\u2019s biological mother returns to their lives. The film is scheduled to show in Common Grounds on Oct. 15 at 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">While the group has discussed adding more events \u2013 they are supporting and may sponsor rides for Harrisonburg\u2019s International Festival on Sept. 27 \u2013 the current roster exemplifies the growth LSA has experienced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">Hernandez, Diaz, and Cruz state that the alliance has quickly expanded since their initial involvement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">Cruz explains, \u201cIt was us three, and then [Mario Valladares and Natasha Hartzler] got pulled in.\u201d In that time, they have also experienced increased response, and this support has come in surprising ways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">\u201cOddly enough,\u201d Hernandez states, \u201cwe get more response from non-Latinos than Latinos during our events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">She credits this dichotomy to the fact that many Latino students commute to campus, making it difficult for them to fully participate in on-campus activities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">Despite this, Diaz and Cruz stated that LSA\u2019s main goal has remained constant: to foster the inclusion of Latino students.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #111111\">Ty Ferrell, Web &amp; Ads Manager<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article was published in the EMU WeatherVane, a student newspaper.
