{"id":22141,"date":"2014-10-02T13:51:06","date_gmt":"2014-10-02T17:51:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=22141"},"modified":"2014-10-20T11:49:25","modified_gmt":"2014-10-20T15:49:25","slug":"south-sudanese-trainings-under-usaid-highlight-importance-of-trauma-awareness-resilience-in-conflict-zones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2014\/south-sudanese-trainings-under-usaid-highlight-importance-of-trauma-awareness-resilience-in-conflict-zones\/","title":{"rendered":"South Sudanese trainings under USAID highlight importance of trauma awareness, resilience, in conflict zones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 100 people in South Sudan, all employees of the U.S. government, recently benefited from intensive trauma awareness and resilience trainings facilitated by Eastern Mennonite University.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usaid.gov\/south-sudan\">USAID<\/a>-sponsored workshops in July and August introduced the approaches used by EMU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/star\/\">Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience (STAR)<\/a> for addressing trauma, breaking cycles of violence, and building individual and collective resilience, said STAR lead trainer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/bargee\">Elaine Zook Barge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Though the content was condensed and delivered in two- or three-day sessions, the workshops \u201caffirm the power of the integrated STAR curriculum,\u201d Barge said. \u201cWhen you look at conflict and violence through a trauma lens, it gives people on the ground new perspective and new possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barge facilitated the August training in South Sudan\u2019s capital city, Juba. She was joined by faculty member <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/jantziv\">Vernon Jantzi <\/a>and two alumni of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/\">EMU\u2019s Center for Justice and Peacebuilding (CJP)<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/2011\/08\/i-needed-a-healing-form-of-justice\/\">Doreen Ruto<\/a> (MA \u201906) and <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/2010\/12\/babu-ayindo\/\">Babu Ayindo <\/a>(MA \u201998), both from Kenya. Shiphrah Mutungi, a Ugandan alumnus of EMU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\/\">Summer Peacebuilding Institute<\/a>, also facilitated.<\/p>\n<p>The introductory workshops, held in Nairobi in July, were led by Ruto and a 2005 CJP grad, <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/cjp-alumni\/john-katunga-murhula\/\">John Katunga<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicrelief.org\/\">Catholic Relief Services<\/a>, with input from CJP administrator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/jennerjm\">Jan Jenner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Having experienced violence . . .<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22150\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22150\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22150 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/10\/South-Sudan-USAID-training-group-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"South Sudan USAID training (group)\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/10\/South-Sudan-USAID-training-group-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/10\/South-Sudan-USAID-training-group-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cAs participants learned about more tools and developed more of an understanding of the STAR principles, they became more hopeful about how they could use this training for themselves and their families.&#8221; (Quote and photo from Elaine Zook Barge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Many of the participants had recently returned to South Sudan, after having fled with their families during a December 2013 attempted military coup and related ethnic violence. This upheaval displaced more than 1 million people. The men in the workshop \u2013 almost all were male Foreign Service Nationals \u2013 were from a range of professions, including drivers, guards, program managers, office staff, doctors and lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>In the six months when they were displaced, many had similar experiences of \u201crunning, refugee camps, and deaths in the family,\u201d one participant explained.<\/p>\n<p>Many also came to the trainings preoccupied by strong feelings of anger and abandonment towards \u201cothers they felt had wronged them, such as the political system, the government and their employer,\u201d said Ruto. \u201cMost of them felt that the training would not be sufficient to resolve some of the unmet needs and grievances that had not yet been expressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But after activities and small-group discussions that focused on the impacts of the conflict in their personal and professional lives, workshop participants began to see these events with a new perspective.<\/p>\n<h3>Seeing with a new perspective<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThey realized that traumatic events are caused by multiple events, especially in a situation of war, and that the evacuation they were focused on might not have been the only traumatic event they were experiencing at the moment,\u201d Ruto said.<\/p>\n<p>One participant noted that learning about the cycles of violence \u201chelps us understand how we keep hurting each other and why the violence\/conflict hasn\u2019t ended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs participants learned about more tools and developed more of an understanding of the STAR principles, they became more hopeful about how they could use this training for themselves and their families,\u201d Barge said.<\/p>\n<p>Participants advocated for further exposure of trauma-resilience training beyond the \u201cforeign service national\u201d community served by the USAID-sponsored workshops.<\/p>\n<h3>More trainings wished for<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThey do not want their children to experience 21-plus years of conflict and violence, and they see that this training could play a real peacebuilding role in the region,\u201d Barge said. \u201cIt\u2019s important that USAID supports the development of trauma-informed staff, but the positive reaction of the participants and their recommendations to get this training to more people in South Sudan challenges USAID and CJP to do more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Generations of South Sudanese have been affected by two civil wars lasting a total of nearly 40 years, encompassing 1955-1972 and 1983-2005. In 2005, a comprehensive peace agreement was signed. South Sudan voted for independence in January 2011 and was declared a sovereign nation six months later. Inter-ethnic warfare, a large refugee population, and internal unrest are among the young nation\u2019s challenges.<\/p>\n<p>In de-briefing sessions after the workshops, Barge said that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/content\/south-sudan-susan-page-departure\/2425155.html\">U.S. Ambassador Susan Page<\/a> (who recently left that role, but stays engaged with South Sudan issues) and other officials expressed optimism about the training.
