{"id":20621,"date":"2014-06-21T16:50:29","date_gmt":"2014-06-21T20:50:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=20621"},"modified":"2014-07-11T14:14:07","modified_gmt":"2014-07-11T18:14:07","slug":"emu-delays-formal-action-on-hiring-policy-after-listening-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2014\/emu-delays-formal-action-on-hiring-policy-after-listening-process\/","title":{"rendered":"EMU delays formal action on hiring policy after listening process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a six-month <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/listen\/\">listening process<\/a> that engaged a broad range of stakeholders, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mennoniteusa.org\/\">Mennonite Church USA<\/a>, the board of trustees of Eastern Mennonite University has delayed formal action regarding the hiring policy and individuals in covenanted same-sex relationships.<\/p>\n<p>The November 2013 board decision to suspend personnel actions related to the current hiring policy will remain in effect as discernment continues.<\/p>\n<p>In offering his public appreciation to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/president\/\">EMU President Loren Swartzendruber<\/a> and his leadership team, Andy Dula, chair of the EMU Board of Trustees, said, \u201cI am proud to be part of EMU, a university where contentious issues can be engaged with mutual respect and with Christian discernment and compassion. We are extremely grateful for President Swartzendruber\u2019s leadership during this challenging time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe process was consistent with how the church engages in discernment around difficult issues,\u201d said Carlos Romero, executive director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mennoniteeducation.org\/MEAPortal\/DesktopDefault.aspx\">Mennonite Education Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s cabinet invited a wide range of constituents \u2013 including students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, church leaders \u2013 to fill out survey forms giving their views on the hiring policy. \u201cMore than 7,000 people responded to our survey,\u201d according to BJ Miller, director of institutional research.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, 20 \u201cdialogue sessions,\u201d including approximately 300 individuals on campus, were held. At least one president\u2019s cabinet member was present at each session to listen and anonymously report perspectives to the rest of the cabinet. The president and cabinet members also engaged leaders across the church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe listening process was extremely valuable in enabling the president\u2019s cabinet to gain a deeper understanding of the range of feelings, hopes and fears about extending university employment to persons in same-sex covenanted relationships,\u201d added Dula.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on this feedback, we acknowledge that the church is currently engaged in extensive discernment over human sexuality. We wish to honor our relationship with the church by not taking a final action now on changing EMU\u2019s hiring policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Swartzendruber, \u201cWe solicited feedback through the listening process, not because it is a democratic process but because we felt it was important to hear from those who care deeply about EMU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Swartzendruber confirmed that views proved to be highly divergent and often passionate, regardless of the stance. \u201cWe never expected to see consensus on this matter,\u201d said Swartzendruber. \u201cWe were hoping for respectful dialog, and indeed this is what we saw within our university community. Internally there was a consistent theme of wanting to maintain unity in spite of our diversity on these and other important issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEMU\u2019s role as a university is to grapple with the difficult questions of our time,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom the beginning, we bathed this process in prayer, seeking God\u2019s guidance. We also received encouragement from numerous church leaders and members to stay engaged with the Mennonite Church as we wrestle with these questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dula said the board has no definite timetable for making a final hiring policy decision. \u201cMany of us from EMU will participate in the Mennonite Church USA\u2019s continuing discussions on human sexuality \u2013 we\u2019ll consider what emerges in the wider church in making our plans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The board\u2019s official statement, passed by a strong majority vote on June 20, 2014:<\/p>\n<p><em>We reaffirm EMU\u2019s mission\u2014to prepare students to serve and lead in a diverse global society\u2014and EMU\u2019s role as a university that fully engages the difficult questions of our time and welcomes diverse perspectives and experiences into the conversation. Out of respect for EMU\u2019s relationship with Mennonite Church USA and its ongoing discernment of human sexuality, we defer action on formally changing EMU\u2019s policy on hiring employees in covenanted same-sex relationships.
