{"id":20252,"date":"2014-05-20T12:16:13","date_gmt":"2014-05-20T16:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=20252"},"modified":"2014-06-11T13:22:45","modified_gmt":"2014-06-11T17:22:45","slug":"emu-mourns-death-of-vincent-harding-a-mennonite-compatriot-of-mlk-a-friend-to-all-oppressed-peoples","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2014\/emu-mourns-death-of-vincent-harding-a-mennonite-compatriot-of-mlk-a-friend-to-all-oppressed-peoples\/","title":{"rendered":"EMU mourns death of Vincent Harding, a Mennonite compatriot of MLK, a friend to all oppressed peoples"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eastern Mennonite University joins millions of people worldwide in grieving the passing of Vincent Harding, sorrowing that we will no longer hear his prophetic voice in person \u2013 reminding us that the dream for \u201ctrue democracy and justice\u201d of Harding\u2019s friend, Martin Luther King Jr., has yet to be realized.<\/p>\n<p>Harding died yesterday [May 19, 2014] at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital from complications due to an aneurysm near his heart. He was 82. His death comes three months after spending <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2014\/03\/vincent-harding-close-friend-of-mlk-urges-emu-community-to-meet-challenge-of-building-a-true-democracy\/\">two days addressing rapt audiences<\/a> of faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members at EMU.<\/p>\n<p>At EMU, Harding and his wife Aljosie spoke of looking forward to having a writing sabbatical (he hoped to make progress on an autobiography) at Pendle Hill, a tranquil Quaker retreat center beside Swarthmore College outside Philadelphia. While at Pendle Hill, Harding developed the heart problems that caused him to spend his last 10 days in the hospital.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20263\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20263\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/05\/ArticleInsetPhoto.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20263\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/05\/ArticleInsetPhoto.jpg\" alt=\"Vincent Harding speaking at university chapel at EMU. \" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20263\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vincent Harding speaking at university chapel at EMU, Feb. 26, 2014. (Photo by Dylan Bomgardner)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Harding was a direct influence on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/zehrh\" target=\"_blank\">Howard Zehr<\/a>, Distinguished Professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/restorative-justice\/what-is-rj\/\">Restorative Justice<\/a> at EMU and co-director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\/restorative-justice\/\">Zehr Institute for Restorative Justice<\/a>. In an <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2014\/03\/vincent-harding-close-friend-of-mlk-urges-emu-community-to-meet-challenge-of-building-a-true-democracy\/\">article<\/a> published by EMU soon after Harding\u2019s February visit, Zehr recalled in the 1960s \u201csitting at the dining room table with him as he patiently helped a na\u00efve white boy understand racial injustice in this country.\u201d Zehr subsequently enrolled in Morehouse College in Atlanta (MLK\u2019s alma mater) and became its first white graduate in 1966. From then on, Zehr focused on addressing social injustices, eventually becoming known as the \u201cgrandfather of restorative justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is just one example of the tens of thousands of people directly influenced by Harding \u2013 millions of people, if one considers the impact of the speeches that Harding wrote for MLK. Harding drafted the famous and highly controversial speech called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/\u201cBeyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence,\u201d\">Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence<\/a>,\u201d delivered by King in New York City on April 4, 1967, exactly one year to the day before his assassination.<\/p>\n<p>Harding was an ordained Mennonite pastor during the era when he and his late wife, Rosemarie, were active in the civil rights movement alongside King and his wife, Coretta.<\/p>\n<p>Harding never stopped struggling on behalf of oppressed peoples.
