{"id":19968,"date":"2014-04-25T15:20:15","date_gmt":"2014-04-25T19:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=19968"},"modified":"2014-05-05T15:48:03","modified_gmt":"2014-05-05T19:48:03","slug":"students-dramatic-photos-help-focus-attention-on-wilderness-conservation-in-virginia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2014\/students-dramatic-photos-help-focus-attention-on-wilderness-conservation-in-virginia\/","title":{"rendered":"Students\u2019 dramatic photos help focus attention on wilderness conservation in Virginia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vawilderness.org\/\">Virginia Wilderness Committee<\/a> has hailed the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vawilderness.org\/1\/post\/2014\/03\/emu-conservation-photography-class-donates-photos.html\">stunning photos<\/a>\u201d of Eastern Mennonite University students, using them \u201con our web site, in our publications, and for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act this year,\u201d according to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vawilderness.org\/1\/post\/2014\/03\/emu-conservation-photography-class-donates-photos.html\">official statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Virginia Wilderness Committee was referring to work that emerged from the first-ever \u201cConservation Photography\u201d class at Eastern Mennonite University in the fall of 2013, in which photography professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/sdj862\">Steven Johnson<\/a> required his students to partner with a conservation organization for a semester-long project.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19993\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19993\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/04\/Conservationphoto_Pyles_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19993\" alt=\"caption\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/04\/Conservationphoto_Pyles_web-300x181.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/04\/Conservationphoto_Pyles_web-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/04\/Conservationphoto_Pyles_web.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19993\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Cow Knob salamander in proposed Little River Wilderness. (Photo by Damon Pyles)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe intent was for the students to provide high-quality imagery to their partner organizations, which the partner organizations could then use for conservation advocacy,\u201d says Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>Four students in that class, Damon Pyles, Han Geon Park, Chass Kreider and Casey Myers, chose to work with the Virginia Wilderness Committee after a representative spoke to the class at Johnson\u2019s invitation. These students photographed wilderness or near-wilderness areas in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/gwj\">George Washington National Park<\/a>. A photo by Pyles, for example, featured a gleaming Cow Knob salamander against a bright-yellow leaf. Park captured a stunning view from a ridge in the proposed Shenandoah Mountain National Scenic Area. Kreider portrayed a hiker intently studying an information board. Myers focused on a clump of caterpillars.<\/p>\n<p>The students\u2019 photos centered on the beauty, unique attributes, and usefulness to outdoor enthusiasts of land that the Virginia Wilderness Committee hopes will be protected for future generations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19995\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19995\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/04\/Conservationphoto_Kreider_large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19995\" alt=\"A hiker stops to look at a map of the Appalachian Trail. (Photo by Chass Kreider)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two of the students, Myers and Kreider, focused specifically on an area of George Washington National Park called Three Ridges. Three Ridges is situated about 30 miles southwest of Charlottesville, Va, and is, according to the website HikingUpward, one of Virginia\u2019s most popular backpacking trails.<\/p>\n<p>Kreider drove out to Three Ridges with her husband almost every fall weekend and typically hiked eight miles in order to get the photographs needed for the project. \u201cI learned that photographing animals and wildlife is really hard, but really rewarding,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Myers says that she had loved wildlife since she was a child, but didn\u2019t realize how difficult it was to combine photography and wildlife observation. \u201cConservation photography takes time, dedication,\u201d she says. \u201cI tried to look for things that people wouldn\u2019t normally see while there.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19994\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19994\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/04\/Conservationphoto_Myers_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19994\" alt=\"Caption\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/04\/Conservationphoto_Myers_web-300x181.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/04\/Conservationphoto_Myers_web-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/04\/Conservationphoto_Myers_web.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19994\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A clump of caterpillars in Three Ridges Wilderness.
