Among the nearly two dozen exemplary student texts featured in forthcoming sixth edition (2015) of <i>The Everyday Writer <\/i>will be Martha Bell\u2019s essay \u201cThe Mystery of Chronic Lyme Disease.\u201d Her essay will model correct use of APA format, a style common in certain types of academic writing. Bell\u2019s essay will also be featured in the next media edition of <i>The St. Martin\u2019s Handbook<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Both texts, widely used in first-year writing courses in American universities, are written by Andrea Lunsford, a Stanford University professor recognized as one of the founders of the modern discipline of composition studies.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19783\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19783\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/04\/dutcher_lansford_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19783\" alt=\"Sanford and Dutcher.\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/04\/dutcher_lansford_web-300x181.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/04\/dutcher_lansford_web-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2014\/04\/dutcher_lansford_web.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19783\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EMU Writing Director Vi Dutcher (right) met Andrea Lunsford, author of\u00a0<em>The Everyday Writer,<\/em> at a recent college composition conference.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A first-year student deep into her spring semester studies, Bell says she was \u201cshocked\u201d to learn that her essay had been selected for the next edition of the handbook. \u201cI had almost forgotten that my paper was even given to the publisher and I didn\u2019t think it would be selected,\u201d the nursing major said. \u201cI am honored that something I wrote and spent so much time on will be published.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell\u2019s accomplishment is \u201ca huge recognition,\u201d both for her personally and for the EMU writing program, says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/langlit\/\">language and literature department<\/a> chair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/medley\">Mike Medley<\/a>. \u201cMartha\u2019s paper shows how our writing program encourages first-year students to begin thinking about their vocation and engaging in research related to their college majors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The quality of the student paper also reflects the first-year writing program\u2019s cohesive focus, developed by rhetoric and composition specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/vd928\">Vi Dutcher<\/a>, as well as the collaborative instructional efforts of faculty and reference librarian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/szb3338\">Stephanie Bush<\/a>, Medley said. Small classes, capped at 16 students, also create opportunities for individual attention and feedback, he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCollege Writing for Transitions\u201d is a required course for all majors that develops critical skills in writing, reading, research and analysis. For their culminating research paper, students are encouraged to explore a topic related to their future career.<\/p>\n<p>The pre-professional focus is one particularly appreciated by Carolyn Lengel, Bedford\/St. Martin\u2019s executive editor for English, who worked with Lunsford to select the essay.<\/p>\n<p>The nursing field was not represented in previous editions of the book or in digital resources, Lengel said. \u201cSo many students planning to enter such professions aren\u2019t aware of how important writing will continue to be in their lives and careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Improvement to textbook suggested by EMU faculty<\/h3>\n<p>The impetus for this new student example came from EMU faculty concerns regarding the handbook\u2019s current model for APA documentation, Lengel said. The current model is a literature review that summarizes, rather than quotes, sources. Following correct APA style for summarization, no page numbers are cited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe EMU faculty requested that a future student APA model in <i>The Everyday Writer<\/i> include quotations as well as summaries,\u201d Lengel said. \u201cWhen I told Vi Dutcher that I\u2019d be interested in sample student writing that her faculty considered exemplary, the EMU faculty responded with a student writing contest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The contest was open to all 160 students enrolled in \u201cCollege Writing for Transitions\u201d last fall. Bell, a student of <a title=\"Scholars of religion and theology debate purpose and outcomes of interfaith dialogue\" href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/me437\">Marti Eads<\/a>, won first place. Though the first- and second-place winners were forwarded to the publisher, there was no guarantee they would be selected to replace the current student model.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha\u2019s paper is an exemplary model of APA style and formatting,\u201d Lengel said, adding that she was \u201csurprised and delighted\u201d by the contest and pleased with its positive results.<\/p>\n<p>The current edition of <i>The Everyday Writer<\/i> includes 22 pieces of student writing \u201cfrom social-media writing and PowerPoint slides to memos, cover letters, and researched writing in various disciplines and in four documentation styles,\u201d Lengel said. \u201cWe don\u2019t change the work in every edition, and I hope we\u2019ll be able to use Martha Bell\u2019s piece for some time to come!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell is a 2013 graduate of <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/emhs.net\/\">Eastern Mennonite High School<\/a> in Harrisonburg, Va., which also emphasizes developing student writing skills.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Future students in the \u201cCollege Writing for Transitions\u201d class at Eastern Mennonite University may recognize a familiar name and face when they thumb through the required handbook.
