The Eastern Mennonite University music department<\/a> will be celebrating the start of the winter season by holding the annual gala concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 16 inside Lehman Auditorium at EMU.<\/p>\n

The hour-and-a-half-long show will feature a wide variety of music, showcasing the diverse talents of EMU\u2019s music department, including the Chamber Singers, Women\u2019s Choir, Men\u2019s Choir, Orchestra and Wind Ensemble<\/a>. The show will be sprinkled with smaller performances \u2014 10 to 15 minutes in length \u2014 complementing two larger numbers, which include a concerto and a choir-led performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a celebratory event,\u201d says Joan Griffing<\/a>, chair of the music department. \u201cThis is an opportunity for people to come celebrate the arts … and specifically music at EMU.\u201d<\/p>\n

Griffing \u2014 who will be conducting the orchestra pieces \u2014 says that the music department\u2019s isolated location on campus \u2014 the first floor of the Lehman Auditorium building \u2014 causes it to be overlooked. This concert will allow both students and the general community an opportunity to take advantage of a performance that the department has been practicing months to perfect.<\/p>\n

Highlights include Beethoven\u2019s \u201cPiano Concerto No. 4,\u201d which will be performed by new piano faculty member, Dr. Anne Waltner<\/a>; the performance will also feature the department\u2019s orchestra.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the concert will feature classical music from Gustav Holst and Franz Schubert, along with the Beatles song \u201cOb-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople come from quite a distance to see this show,\u201d says Ken Nafziger<\/a>, who has been a professor at EMU since 1977. \u201cThis is a significant event for our institution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schubert\u2019s \u201cMass in G Major,\u201d will be the largest performance of the night, which will be performed by the 75 member choir and conducted by Nafziger.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be a wide range of musical styles and musical groups, an eclectic mix of music,\u201d says Griffing. \u201cThe concert will have something for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Donations collected in lieu of admission; suggested price of $10 per person. Proceeds benefit the music scholarship fund.<\/p>\n
