{"id":17915,"date":"2013-08-23T17:50:24","date_gmt":"2013-08-23T21:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=17915"},"modified":"2014-09-17T10:42:56","modified_gmt":"2014-09-17T14:42:56","slug":"averted-school-shooting-shows-value-of-conflict-transformation-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2013\/averted-school-shooting-shows-value-of-conflict-transformation-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"Averted school shooting shows value of conflict transformation skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/lisa-schirch\/she-didnt-have-a-gun-she-_b_3792821.html\">Huffington Post commentary<\/a>, EMU research professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/schirchl\">Lisa Schirch <\/a>praised the conflict transformation skills used spontaneously by the school staffer who, on Tuesday, talked a gunman into surrendering rather than shooting inside an elementary school in a suburb of Atlanta, Ga.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Antoinette Tuff is a national hero,&#8221; wrote Schirch, who is affiliated with EMU&#8217;s <a href=\"www.emu.edu\/cjp\/\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a>. &#8220;Her story must be shared, passed onto future generations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Titling her commentary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/lisa-schirch\/she-didnt-have-a-gun-she-_b_3792821.html\">&#8220;She Didn&#8217;t Have a Gun&#8230; She Had MLK&#8217;s Dream,&#8221;<\/a> Schirch pointed out that &#8220;learning to talk down a gunman is not some top-secret strategy. FBI agents learn how to talk down gunman. They use the same skills we teach in conflict transformation and peacebuilding. Listen, ask questions, share stories, show compassion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Schirch is also the founding director of the human security program under the <a href=\"www.allianceforpeacebuilding.org\/\u200e\">Alliance for Peacebuilding<\/a> based in Washington D.C.<\/p>\n<p>A columnist in the Washington Post, Petula Dvorak, drew <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/antoinette-tuffs-911-call-on-ga-shooting-suspect-is-a-portrait-of-poise-compassion\/2013\/08\/22\/c62a6fa2-0b3a-11e3-8974-f97ab3b3c677_story.html\">similar lessons<\/a> from Antoinette Tuff&#8217;s sympathetic manner of speaking to the gunman, saying: &#8220;Are you listening to her, America? Her 911 call \u2014 listen to the whole thing; it\u2019s riveting \u2014 is a portrait of poise, compassion and selflessness.
