{"id":16803,"date":"2013-04-29T16:26:51","date_gmt":"2013-04-29T20:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=16803"},"modified":"2013-05-22T11:12:10","modified_gmt":"2013-05-22T15:12:10","slug":"mark-shriver-on-being-a-pencil-in-gods-hand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2013\/mark-shriver-on-being-a-pencil-in-gods-hand\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Shriver: On Being a \u2018Pencil in God\u2019s Hand\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Commencement speaker Mark Shriver said he had to battle his own ego to address the 2013 graduating class of Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) about what really counts: \u201cTo perform acts of hope and love&#8230; [This] is what matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I initially accepted the invitation to speak here because it is such an honor and it felt good for my ego,\u201d he said during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/commencement\/\">95th annual commencement exercises <\/a>on April 28, 2013. \u201cI was being recognized for all of my great achievements: Should I talk about my work as a member of the Maryland legislature, or what lessons I gleaned from my successful private sector experience? Maybe I should speak about writing a bestselling book and the experience of a national book tour? Surely this was my chance to speak about my thoughts, to share my pearls of wisdom.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16857\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16857\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2013\/04\/mark-shriver-on-being-a-pencil-in-gods-hand\/graduation_2_web\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16857\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16857\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2013\/04\/graduation_2_web-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2013\/04\/graduation_2_web-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2013\/04\/graduation_2_web.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16857\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EMU graduation 2013. (Photo by Annie Diller)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;But when I started to write this speech, I struggled,\u201d he added. \u201cThose very thoughts conflicted with what Eastern Mennonite University stands for, and has taught each of you. Indeed, by extending the invitation, Eastern Mennonite University was teaching me that what I am trying to do in my life\u2014to serve poor kids and their families, to perform acts of hope and love\u2014is what matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shriver referenced stories from his father, Sargent Shriver, and his work with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peacecorps.gov\/\">Peace Corps<\/a>, War on Poverty, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhsa.org\/\">Head Start<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jobcorps.gov\/home.aspx\">Job Core<\/a>. Looking back through letters written to him by his father, Shriver identified three key virtues embodied by his father&#8217;s life \u2013 faith, hope and love.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Indeed, being good, when no one is looking, being good when the cameras are off and the lights are off, being good to presidents and cardinals was as important as being good to the waitresses or the garbage collectors \u2013 goodness, for him [Sargent Shriver] was more important than greatness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mark Shriver is the author of <a href=\"http:\/\/a-good-man.net\/\"><em>A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver<\/em><\/a> (Henry Holt and Co., 2012), which describes how his father lived out his faith, hope and love in his marriage of 54 years, parenting of five children, and wide-ranging service work.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16858\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16858\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2013\/04\/mark-shriver-on-being-a-pencil-in-gods-hand\/graduation_1_web\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16858\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16858\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2013\/04\/graduation_1_web-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2013\/04\/graduation_1_web-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2013\/04\/graduation_1_web.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16858\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left: James Souder and Phillip Martin, EMU class of 2013. He would&#8217;ve especially loved that each of you, as traditional undergraduates, has completed at least nine semester hours of cross-cultural work. You&#8217;ve demonstrated a commitment to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/peacebuilding\/\">peacebuilding<\/a>, to global awareness and \u2026 to the interdependence of cultures and nations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shriver, who is senior vice president for strategic initiatives and senior advisor to the chief executive officer of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savethechildren.org\/site\/c.8rKLIXMGIpI4E\/b.6153159\/k.C8D5\/USA.htm\">Save the Children U.S. Programs<\/a>, modeled humble gratitude to the thousands in the audience. &#8220;By asking me to stand in front of all of you\u2014a guy who is not a political potentate or a high-ranking legal scholar, who is not a famous bestselling author\u2014by inviting me to speak\u2014someone who is striving to be a pencil in God\u2019s hand\u2014Eastern Mennonite University has taught me\u2014and I hope all of you\u2014that what is truly important in life is to accept Jesus\u2019 invitation to love and serve each other, to commit to daily acts of hope and love.
