Smeltzer<\/a>, PhD, has been named vice president and undergraduate dean of Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), beginning July 1, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeirdre brings a wealth of experience as an outstanding teacher, scholar, and department chair,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/provost\/\">Provost Fred Kniss<\/a> in an April 5 email announcing the appointment to the campus community. \u201cShe knows EMU well, having served on the faculty since 1998. She has the skills and dispositions necessary for leading the undergraduate programs into their next stage of growth and development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since joining the EMU faculty, Smeltzer has held increasingly responsible positions, including chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/math\/\">mathematical sciences department<\/a>, 2005-2012. During 2012-13, Smeltzer had dual roles as a faculty member and director of EMU\u2019s extensive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/crosscultural\/\">cross-cultural programs<\/a>. Smeltzer has been a member of EMU\u2019s strategic planning council, faculty senate and undergraduate council executive committee.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16611\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16611\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2013\/04\/deirdre-smeltzer-named-v-p-and-undergrad-dean\/smeltzer_deirdre_web_profile\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16611\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16611\" src=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2013\/04\/smeltzer_deirdre_web_profile-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2013\/04\/smeltzer_deirdre_web_profile-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2013\/04\/smeltzer_deirdre_web_profile.jpg 422w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deirdre Smeltzer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Prior to coming to EMU, she served for four years on the faculty of the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. She has taught courses on more than two dozen topics in her field and is author or co-author of a number of peer-reviewed articles and a textbook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeirdre is known by her colleagues for her excellent problem-solving and strategic-thinking skills, and for her commitment to high academic standards,\u201d said Kniss. \u201cI am eagerly looking forward to working with her in the years ahead as we move into an exciting period of growth and development for undergraduate programs at EMU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smeltzer majored in mathematics and minored in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/bible\/\">Bible<\/a> at EMU, graduating in 1987. She earned her MS and PhD in mathematics at the University of Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>Recalling her undergraduate years at EMU, Smeltzer credits two professors, Millard Showalter in Calculus II and Del Snyder in Discrete Math, for nurturing her interest in higher-level mathematics. \u201cMillard made class interesting, and I found myself doing his homework first,\u201d she recalled in an interview with the EMU alumni magazine. \u201cIn Discrete Math, I discovered that I really loved the abstract, logical thinking required \u2013 much more than the hands-on labs of chemistry, which was another major that I was considering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a scholar, Smeltzer has published articles on topics such as \u201cEdge bounds in non-hamiltonian k-connected graphs\u201d and \u201cExploring Loci in Geometry\u201d (both with her EMU colleague <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/personnel\/people\/show\/byer\">Owen Byer<\/a>, PhD) and has given presentations on \u201capplications of circular and spherical inversions,\u201d among other topics. She, Byer and a third mathematician, Felix Lazebnik, are authors of a textbook on Euclidean geometry, published by the Mathematical Association of America in 2010. A second book is in the works.<\/p>\n<p>Fulfilling commitments made before her new appointment, Smeltzer will be co-leading an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/crosscultural\/programs\/china-2013\/\">EMU cross-cultural to China<\/a> in the fall of 2013. She did a sabbatical in China in 2006, where she taught and wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Smeltzer and husband Sherwyn, a 1986 graduate in accounting, are the parents of Meg, a senior at EMU, and Claire, enrolled at Eastern Mennonite High School.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mathematics professor Deirdre L.
